Sorry, but Urban Meyer poops talented Offensive Coordinators. The good news is that Narduzzi may end up being a huge loss for Dantonio. I am already looking forward to October 17. It's about time Michigan was on the winning end of a 42-0 score.

No. The first thing I do is go to my Snickers closet.
THEN I read MGoBlog.

IMO Dantonio is the most important piece of that defense. I'm sure Narduzzi is a great DC, but Dantonio coordinated OSU's national championship defense. I bet MSU's defense stays very strong.

Harbaugh would absolutely save 2014. There are still 8 days left in 2014.

But don't make claims, stand by those claims, flame other posters, when you're wrong and ignorant.
Yeah, I know a bit about the MSU coaching staff, as I do most B1G coaching staffs. The cute swipe for my "Wolverine Fan Card" won't get you far though.

Parker, an MSU alum, has been at Iowa for all of Ferentz tenure. He was a long time DB coach until Norm Parker (no relation) retired as the long time Iowa DC.
Greg Davis is in his third year after coming over from Texas (where he was fired after one of Mack Brown's purges to try to buy time for his job). He took over for Ken O'Keefe when he resigned from the position.
This is a stupid exercise regardless, as this stuff is on this thing called "The Internet".

But it's something the Purdue coaching staff emphasizes.
Essentially, they don't have a play called something like "Houston". They have, instead, something like 10 two man route concepts, 5 three man route concepts, and a half dozen run concepts. Then they mash them together and that gives them something like 100 plays to choose from.
So instead of having a play called "Houston", and then having a play called "Houston Pivot", they more or less have "Smash Panther" which is a smash concept to one side and double slants to the other side.
As I said, this isn't that foreign of a concept. Most coaches do this kind of thing to some degree. But Purdue pretty much does that and only that. It's a means of simplifying the playbook and how much the players have to learn, because it's easier to say "you have to learn 15 things and then do those things well and fast" than it is to say you need to learn 100 things (or 50 things if you realize many of the plays are similar with slight varients).

He knows his stuff, better than the vast majority here (or any other fan-centric sites I've been to).
I don't know if you've been around longer than you've been a poster, but SpaceCoyote has a wide knowledge base about coaching in general and isn't some Sparty obsessed internet tough guy. For example he's been featured by a Wisconsin blog talking about their schemes and he's written for this site's magazine as well as a bunch of other things I'm probably forgetting at one in the morning.

I'm not a big MLive fan, but Dantonio hired Narduzzi when he was hired at Cincinnati. Dantonio hasn't been a HC without Narduzzi as his DC.
Bollman, the Co-OC that doesn't call plays, was brought over from OSU, where he had previously worked with Dantonio under Tressel. They needed an offensive coach when they ditched Rouchar, and Bollman had just been hired at Purdue when Dantonio made the "Co-OC" offer to steal him away without Purdue losing face. Warner, the other OC (the one that calls plays), has been with Dantonio at MSU for 8 years (his entire tenure).
So yeah, he does like to hire from within. He's replaced the other two OCs he lost from within. He's essentially all of let go two coaches in his time in East Lansing (Rouchar and their previous DL coach). Bennett and Tressel have both been at MSU for Dantonio's entire tenure, as has Staten. Samuel he stole from his old QB coach Dan Enos.

results as an Offensive Coordinator?
I'm not sure what point you were trying to make but it's a pretty ignorant attack given what happended last year.

of really bad. It still doesn't contradict my point.
I'm not saying Borges was wonderful but I don't believe he was the whole problem either. The lack of significant improvement last year supports that.

Bringing Borges up is akin to this
Either way, I still find it laughable that people dismiss "execution". I find it funny that people insinuate that means I place no blame on the coaches. Regardless, Borges is gone, he isn't coming back, I'm not sure what the point of this discussion is.
But.. if a few of you want to go there, I find it a bit odd that a guy that was universally praised as I guy that really understood playcalling and how to put plays together and had the fan's approval somehow made the offense worse. DId he simply forget how to call plays suddenly? Did he lose so much talent as to get shut out at ND and drop to something like 21 ppg from 32.2? No, absolutely not. And that's not a shot at Nuss either, whose playcalling I don't think is seriously at fault either.
The great Urban Meyer and Tom Herman called 40 some plays in the first half against Wisconsin. They called a total of three different play calls over half the time in that sequence. Great playcalling? Unpredictable? Absolutely not. But the players certainly executed those plays at a high level, which allowed them to march up and down the field on a very good defense. Jim Tressel once called "Dave Right" 8 straight times. Great playcalling? Unpredictable? Absolutely not. But his teams was out-executing the opponent and it kept working so he kept running it.
Only in the mind of people that have never coached football can it be believed that "execution" is just a buzz word that people make up as an excuse. Michigan failed to execute for two consecutive years and it showed. Borges didn't realize how to call plays against OSU and ND last year and forget the rest of the year. Nuss didn't remember suddenly how to call plays against OSU this year. It's such a counter-intuitive thought process that rationalizes that paid professionals that have been doing something for decades randomly forget and recollect something as simple as playcalling, how to set up plays, etc, but a bunch of 18-22 year olds that are each required to perform highly detailed, complex, and specific jobs that they've been doing for all of a few years isn't probably the problem.
You've watched some football. You've maybe played Madden. You've seen plays run and all that stuff. Why is it that with that base of knowledge you can pick up well enough on play calling to be critical of it, but someone that spends dozens of hours a day working at it can't figure it out? It's nonsensical. Playcalling wasn't ever perfect. It's not perfect at any school. OSU fans bitched about Herman in 2013. MSU fans bitched about Narduzzi for three years. But they bitch because fans bitch because fans think they know well enough but somehow the coaches don't with such a task.
Execution was the major issue for Michigan. You're basically NFL reporters still holding strong that there is no chance Harbaugh is coming to Michigan. Despite all evidence to the contrary, you're steadfast in your belief that playcalling was the primary issue, and then was again with a completely different OC. But then you throw insults in there as well. Make sense of that. Now I'm done talking about Borges for those of you who randomly like to bring it up as some sort of supposed slap to the preverbial face.

Must say, if we trade Hoke for Harbaugh and see MSU loses Narduzzi and OSU loses Herman....then I'd say this was a pretty successful off season.
December 23rd, 2014 at 12:21 AM ^
Good I guess but I don't think it would be much of a hiccup for them. Dantonio knows defense and will get someone to keep it rolling. He better be ready for Harbaugh though...hopefully.

If Narduzzi was hired at Pitt, which coaches on the Defensive staff would he take with him. I have a feeling he would steal some, and my feeling is that Tressel would be the likely one to take over as DC.
Dantonio can mitigate losing a DB coach (Bennett), and Tressel can probably keep a lot of the scheme aspects going (it was by Narduzzi's recommendation that they run the Cover 4 that they did, he was the coach that brought that to Dantonio when he and another coach I forget the name of first developed it as a core scheme; Dantonio himself was initially skeptical, as he was a very multiple coverage/front DC while he was at OSU), and I don't think it'd be a huge stepback, but it certainly wouldn't help either.
December 23rd, 2014 at 1:45 AM ^
wasn't it Scott Schaffer, our former DC under Rich Rod who helped him develop that cover 4? I think I read that somewhere but I am not sure.
