Nah'Shon Hyland Update - Staff Will Be In to See Him 3/23, Tentaive Visit In The Works

Submitted by Matt EM on April 17th, 2019 at 3:26 PM

Just confirmed with Nah'Shon that the staff will be in to see him next Tuesday, with plans to set up a visit to Ann Arbor in the near future.

This has the feel of something that is developing rather quickly, and appears both sides have mutual interest. I'm on record as saying I think this kid one of the very best playmakers in the 2019 class, committed or uncommitted, and is a top 50 talent.

He might struggle to acclimate right away, but I like his ceiling. Him and Zeb could look really good in the backcourt in a few years. Only drawback is he may not help much next season. But if you get  a grad transfer in Pierce, that might dispel some of that worry

For the sake of comparison, Hyland is certainly more skilled than Zeb, while Zeb is certainly more athletic than Hyland. The 2 could likely co-exist. Hyland skilled enough to slide to either guard spot, whereas I don't think Zeb can play the 2.

While I obviously can't speak on behalf of Zeb, I'd be inclined to say it wouldn't since Hyland appears to have some versatility at the guard spot. If I had to choose 1 however, I'd go with Hyland even though I think Jackson is a great pick-up.

Awesome. Love how comfortable he seems in traffic with the ball. Very confident in his handle (because it's good) and doesn't get flustered or sped up. Seems to have a great instinct of where guys are at.

Also he's a 6'3" that other guys the same height would say they're 6'4" or 6'5". Looks like a legit height and maybe even a bit taller.

I don't think there is any doubt that his ability/inability to absorb contact at the B10 level will be a concern early on. But frankly, Michigan is a team built for the early season success(meaning because we're an experienced, physically developed team that plays hard we're going to win a lot of games through the first 12-18 games of the season as other teams play catch up), we would only need Hyland to be ready for the stretch run (much like Levert). He may reach 180-185 by the time late February/early March rolls around. No doubt in my mind though, with a year of S&C and further development, he'd have a real chance to be the most talented offensive player on the team as a sophomore.

Okay.  Honest question.  If Iggy, Matthews and Poole all go, how many scholarships do we have for ‘19?  I know Wilson and Bajema are taking two. How many would we the have available?

Pierce, Hyland, and Wagner and call it a day. I'd guess in that scenario someone on the current roster would move on and make space for all three.

Matt D, when I watched the tape I basically see Poole, but actually good. By that I mean he has a similar handle, a little tighter but he actually gets somewhere, similar games, but more production out his game.

I look at Poole's game and think of a guy you're playing 1 on 1 against. You either best him 11-3 or you lose 0-11 because he just starts hitting ridiculous shots

Just watched a little film.  Great handle with a quick release.  A quick twitch athlete with room to put weight on his frame.  Interesting to see if he grows this summer.  If he puts on 30 lbs and an inch or two in the next two years, look out!  Been a whole since we’ve had a guy with handles like that.

His dribble/handle is the thing that stood out to me as well. Usually that translates into getting to the basket easily. I like his decision making and playmaking ability for himself and for those around him. Indeed, he seems to have a high basketball IQ. As others have suggested, he is light right now but I'm thinking he's going to be a freak basketball athlete when he gets up to weight. I really hope we get this guy.
