My Waaay Too Early NCAA '23 Ratings

Submitted by MaizeBlueA2 on February 24th, 2023 at 8:08 AM

...have at it.

  • No surprise at who made the biggest jump from NCAA '22 (hint: CB #2)
  • A reminder for the "youngins," NCAA ratings were before Madden fixed its ratings system.  There is no such thing as a player in the 60s (and definitely not 50s) on a Top 25, Power 5 team. In fact, my 73s and 74s are kind of low and those players would get "cut" after a year of recruiting a random 4* over them (who would come in at 76 or 76).  Generally speaking, 5*'s were 79-81 (with top 10 guys a little higher), 4*'s were 76-78, 3*s were 74-76.  It was waaay too condensed.
  • Michigan's offense would be insane.

As a sidenote, losing Gemon Green winds up being one of the biggest losses (that maybe wasn't as anticipated).

In a perfect world, he'd start opposite Johnson and have that spot until week 9 or so when Walker took over. Same situation as last year, just no assault that puts him out of the lineup and opens the door for the young guy.

Luckily, the schedule is manageable and Walker will have plenty of time to get settled into that starting role (assuming we don't find anyone in the May Transfer Portal window).

Not Anticipated: Something not regarded as probable or expected.

Surprised: an unexpected event, fact, or thing.

It is essentially the same thing. Gemon Green's departure should have been anticipated (probable or predictable). He had been in the program for five years. He started/played in 2021 season prior to being passed by DJ Turner and improved tremendously going into 2022.

No. They're not the same thing.

They CAN be.  For example, I do not anticipate my boss giving me a $1M raise.  I would be surprised if my boss gave me a $1M raise.

...now my turn.

I do not anticipate Michigan currently being projected to be in the 2023 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.  I would not be surprised at all if Michigan was currently projected to be in the 2023 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

------------------------------------

So don't tell me what I was trying to say and don't make shit up that is patiently false to try to prove your point.

I said what I said, and meant what I said.  Green's exit wasn't anticipated...it also was not a surprise.  Just like it wouldn't have been a surprise if Keegan left, or Zinter.

Michael Barrett was in the exact same class. No one would call it a surprise that he's still on the team...nor would it be a surprise if he wasn't.  And he's been a very good player (like Gemon).

Another example? German's TWIN BROTHER is still on the team.  It's not a surprise that he's still on the team when you factor in COVID year's and redshirts.

My slight minstreptation of you vague wording aside, I do not know what "shit I made up".

Gemon appeared in 12 games with six starts at cornerback in 2021.

Gemon appeared in 13 games with 10 starts at cornerback in 2021. He played well enough that he Seth considered giving him a star.

He started 22 games in the 42 games he played in at U of M.

Starter quality cornerbacks do not normally return for 6th years. It is entirely different than Barrett, a guy with no NFL position/1 start at LB prior to 2022, and German, a career backup with no film to show the NFL, returning.

I did not anticipate Zinter to return (or Keegan TBH) and that was a pleasant surprise. I, and I assume others, anticipated Gemon's departure even if we hoped he would return and it would be beneficial.

lol just because you jumped to a conclusion doesn't make something vague.

It just means you misinterpreted it and...jumped to a conclusion. I do it, you do it, all people do it all the time. The fact that you're still arguing something YOU misinterpreted is wild.

There was nothing vague, nothing abstract, nothing cloudy about what I said.

You just assumed something that wasn't true and then tried to argue a point that wasn't there to be made. (Which was...if something is not anticipated, it is a surprise - you even tried to go all Merriam-Webster).

Which is as I've already very clearly explained can be true, but can also be completely false. Which was the case this time around.

"While many expected Green to stay in Ann Arbor for the upcoming season, he’s ready to test his ability at the next level."

...pretty clear a number of folks on this very site thought Gemon would be back for one more season.

So if twin brothers from the University of Michigan left Ann Arbor on trains going on straight routes 37 degrees from one another at 89 mph and 70 mph how far apart would they be in 3 hours?  Would you anticipate that either one would be in a lake?   Would it be a surprise if one of them were in a lake? What if the lake was named Green lake?   Would you be surprised then?  Could you have anticipated that?

Absolutely no reason to think he’ll excel in year one, after spending last year as a WR who hardly played. This isn’t a Mikey S situation. Mikey came to college as a CB who was coveted by VaTech. And he’d already spent a few years at Michigan. Can’t imagine Walker will just step right into a starting role without a large learning curve. But I’d love to be wrong.

Nick Saban and others wanted Walker as a DB. I'd say that is higher praise than VA. Tech.

He also is a freakish athlete who was already working part time with the defense.

There was very little reason to believe that Mikey converting was going to have the impact he had and it worked out. I'm choosing to believe until reality forces me to.

Fantastic work. My only thing would be D. Warren at 81. I dont think I would put him in the 80s as of yet. I dont think he is within 8 points of JJ. If Cade was still around I think id put him at 81 for example.

I'm with you...that's probably the one that I didn't feel good about.  There was some of that "well if he's the backup QB at Michigan/OSU/Georgia/Alabama/USC/etc. - he has to be at least 80" kind of EA Sports rationale.  I had him at an 80 (which I know is still too high in your opinion), but it just felt weird with all of the hype.

Roman Wilson and Cornelius Johnson were the other two that I had trouble with (excluding the kickers, because "who the hell knows?")

I don't/didn't play these games enough to have enough of a frame of reference to really understand this. How good is mid to high 80s? In my mind, I'm thinking "B," as in so-so. But a lot of our great players are in that range. Is that just a lot better than I'm thinking? Are players in the 90s really rare?

MAN i can't wait for the next rendition of the game to come out. Last I heard was 2024 at the earliest. Anyone know if they're going to do basketball and baseball like they had at one point as well?
