Moore's offensive philosophy

Submitted by UMfan21 on January 3rd, 2023 at 6:30 PM

I keep seeing Moore's name tossed around as a potential heir apparent if Harbaugh leaves.  It got me to researching his experience a bit because one thing I don't understand is his philosophy.  Between our co-coordinators and Harbaugh's fingers on the offense, I have no idea what a "Sherrone Moore offense" even looks like.

Moore played two years at Butler CC before transferring to Oklahoma where he played under Bob Stoops (Kevin Wilson as OC).  That makes me think he's got some "spread to pass" roots, even though he was a lineman.

His coaching prior to UofM was at Louisville (almost entirely during Charlie Strong's tenure).  Charlie strong of course came from the defensive side.  They had a couple offensive coordinators, but the majority of his time there was under Shawn Watford running a pro style offense.

From there, Moore moved to CMU where Dan Enos was coach.  I dont have a good recollection of their offense at that time, but I believe they were pro style.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, he is an unknown.  His playing days were more spread, but his coaching stints have been more pro style.  I think one of the biggest obstacles he is going to face is explaining to Warde what a "Sherrone Moore" offense is, and what we can expect out of it.   This is where the co-coordinator thing hurts us because we don't have a clear body of work to judge him.

This kind of thinking is so common and I don’t get it at all. Talking and speculating about sports-related topics is part of the fun of being a fan. No one is harmed by it. I get the feeling there are some fans who are so emotionally involved in their fandom that they just can’t handle discussion of anything they don’t want to hear, even if they don’t have to participate in it. But maybe it’s just a growing part of society bleeding over into sports: other people shouldn’t say anything I don’t agree with or don’t want to hear.

I do agree that some people should evaluate their negging tendencies. Sometimes it really just is bad, but if it comes down to a difference in opinion it’s kinda ridiculous to start downvoting. I know talking about points is blasphemy but it’s how you self moderate. Some folks who get negged don’t deserve it and it turns into a self fulfilling prophecy of them being a troll when they really are a fellow fan.

Corum was a cheat code.  I don’t really think we had to develop an “offensive philosophy” aside from give Blake the ball and have him push everything 7 yards down field until we got in field goal range.

DeBoer, Leipold, or Klieman would all be solid candidates if they could hold most of the coaching staff together. If they came in and cleared house, I would wonder if the Michigan job is too big for any of them without that continuity. DeBoer with one year at Washington would probably be the one best equipped to make the transition to Michigan.

Other candidates who would be good fits that left coaching and are still young are Bronco Mendenhal and Chris Peterson. They have both built strong programs and cultures at all their stops. Peterson would be a steal if he decided to coach again, and having made the CFP at Washington, he knows what it takes to get there.

he's the OC under Harbaugh the last couple of years, so assuming his philosophy isn't that much different, especially being the OL coach in a run heavy system.

Not sure it matters as the idea with an internal hire is, in part, to keep the staff and players together. Wiess would keep the same system intact and any new hire, presumably, would be aligned with how this championship roster has been constructed.

In support of the OP: I don't mind some deep-diving on Moore one bit, and I'd welcome some analysis about his coaching philosophy independent of #HarbaughWatch2023.

Whatever happens will be bad now. Bad if Harbaugh comes back because fans are sick of this shit and no longer trust Harbaugh's word. Will be used against plus in recruited forever and it's clear this will be an every year thing.

Bad if he leaves because we start over, likely lose recruits and go through growing pains of a new coach.

Is everyone already assuming that Minter is not ready as well? I’m not saying that he is but he definitely was getting some buzz as being called upon to coach at Cincy, he’s got boatloads of experience as a DC at multiple stops, and while I get that he has no head coaching experience, you only get that experience by being, you know, a head coach. Ideally he would’ve had experience at the FCS or G5 level, but maybe he doesn’t need to.

I don’t know how well he can recruit, but he’s young and came in with almost no transition costs on the defense. Arguably made it even better and without any superstars. Maybe you take a chance on him and see what happens.

I’m not sure he’s any less qualified than Moore is, and honestly I think whoever Michigan has to hire, they’re going to have to take a bit of a flier on and hope it works. Unless you’re plucking a guy from the league after the season is over, and that’s dangerous enough to do since those guys generally want to get back to the league, your pickings are slim for candidates. Roll the dice on a high ceiling guy already on staff, which will minimize the recruiting impact and exodus of transfers, as much as possible anyway, and hope you found your guy for the next 10-15 years.

No, I am fully on the Minter bandwagon.  But we know his philosophy.  I think he would be a good gamble as a first hire and he could go get himself a stud OC to runwhatever offense he wants.  I made this point over a month ago.

I just dont think Minter's situation is as interesting as Moore because we know who he is already.

Harbaugh would almost certainly take Weiss with him, and might take Minter as well if he can't get Fangio. Minter would almost certainly stay at Michigan if he was named head coach rather than be an NFL DC, but Moore has been around longer and would then probably bolt if Minter was chosen over him. Which would probably mean Hart or Jay Harbaugh as OC (Jay would probably follow Jim to the NFL if not given a coordinator position).

With Moore as HC, Minter probably sticks around as DC unless Jim offered him an NFL DC gig. A little better short-term continuity in that case.

If Harbaugh leaves us after finally breaking through and getting us closer than ever to a national championship (seriously, next year is our best shot) AND dismantles half our staff by taking them with him to the NFL, we should never utter the name Harbaugh again.

that would be a real sick thing to do to your alma mater.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it’s pretty serious. And Moore runs the air raid, spread, pro style, power I, wish bone

Sherrone Moore doesn't have remotely the experience necessary to be the permanent HC at Michigan.

Interim if you can't find anybody, fine, but people making out like he'd be a good hire are nuts.

Michigan is definitively back to being a top 10 job, arguably a top 5 job. The standard has to be higher than young coordinators who are already here.

As a preface, I’m 67, was a U-M freshman 50 years ago, and have never been on social media. This is the only blog I have ever read and commented on.

Having said all that, I have a question: why is it that every damn cotton-pickin’ post results in the first batch of comments insulting the poster for creating the post? Is this normal internet behavior or unique to mgoblog?

Once in awhile, it is warranted, but most of the time, it is not. My fellow mgobloggers, this is a legitimate post! All these posts about JH possibly leaving and discussing his successors, especially Moore, are timely and legitimate. What else should we be talking about and why is this a problem?

And since I have no clue as to what SM’s offensive philosophy is, this could be informative. Let’s tone down all the immediate OP insults of every post

This board has gone downhill it feels - The volume of people too obsessed with upvotes and negative votes while only posting the groupthink approved opinion here where those with other views (which are probably 80% the same) are totally bullied and labeled as heretics is reaching all-time highs again.

Its a fucking message board and nothing said here realllyyyyy matters.

Stuff can be discussed. The obsession with labeling things as ‘OT’ or 'SIAP' is getting a bit obnoxious…while the gate keeping of “I’m in the know of some pertinent information but I can’t tell you because idk” is annoying, and combined with the ‘no true Scotsman’ antics, this place has become very unwelcoming in the past 2-4 years.

This used to be my favorite board (of all 2-3 I even look at anymore), but it’s becoming a very subtly hostile place - even for established posters.
