It also says that this is a yearly laundry list task, given Mississippi state laws. I don't think this says anything until an agreement is in place.

whether it is Mullen or others you have as your next-in-line preferences, is the fear of waiting on a JH decline. Or, as I think of it, the fear of Schiano.

I don't think Mullen is a long term option 7-5 seasons up until this year. He'll either continue to go 10-2 and become a really hot name or he'll fall back to 7-5 again every year like Shiano.

Look at his wins up until this year. Kentucky, Tennessee, South Alabama, Vanderbilt, Arkansas under JLS. We can't have a one year wonder and we'd have to pay quite a bit to get him to come north so why not offer the money you'd have to offer him to proven long haul winners like Harbaugh and Miles?

His last three years brought him back down exactly to .500, but for his first 10 years, Jackie Sherrill had nearly the same success Mullen has had for his first six years at MSU (although Sherill actually won his division once).

I really hope that Hackett knows what he's doing, while his search may be deliberate, the candidate pool is getting smaller. What happens if Mullen, Harbaugh(s), Miles, etc.. are off the table?

and I think you'd have to hire one if the "unspoken ones" but at a high salary per but low/no firing buyout deal. If the Schiano types refuse for lack of security or you feel it sends the wrong message you offer the same to "reach" guys like the NDSU coach. You give him a 4 year deal worth about $1M per and NO firing buyout. There are a few types like that out there and they're either legit coaches or not. One of them would just at the job, if not all. Football is football, man. Worst case scenario I give an offer like that to the NDSU coach. Yet, that's worst case after every solid coach you'd take at another program declines. You even try to get a few hot coordinators before that but it may come to it. You can't rehire Hoke or quit football. He can't be worse than a guy that didn't know his QB was KO'd for ANY reason and clapped after the 6th turnover against a rival, etc.

he is in my top 10 (due to the lack of realistic options) but I'm not nearly as sold on him as Brian & others. I'd take Mora over him, for instance. A Mullen hire wouldn't bother me but I have at least 7 guys ahead of him.
