Minnesota can't wait to take on Michigan, other smack talk
I know we've done nothing to make them really afraid of us, but maybe you should keep it to yourself until you can score more than once on Iowa.
“If we win — when we win — this week, it’s definitely going to be something that can erase all of that,” Cedric Thompson said.
Jon Christenson said. “We can’t wait to take on Michigan."
“Just the fact they almost lost to Akron, they’re human,” Gophers defensive tackle Ra’Shede Hageman said. “You know what I mean? Everybody praises them to be elite, and I just feel like they’re a regular football team."
Quarterback Devin Gardner “I think he kind of just panics a lot,” Thompson said. “I think that when he scrambles, he kind of just throws the ball.”
Been called out. But talk is cheap and it's time to respond on the field. But really, Gopher smack talk??

Edit: A little Meta weirdness - when I'm logged in this post appears on the MGoBoard on the right but when I log out the Trouba post is the newest one.

Reacting to stupid smack from a crappy low-tier B1G team is undignified. Whether we fall for it or not, it means nothing. It's the internets.

I'm sorry, but I can't take Gopher smack talk seriously. We beat them at their place with our worst team ever by multiple scores. We shut them out in 2011. We win this game by 20 points easy.
Also could you imagine any UM players disrespecting the opposition like this, especially to the media?

One of the funniest sports moments IMO even though we lost was Glen Mason breathlessly telling the sideline reporter that he just "wanted to see what the damn Jug looked like" About sums up our "rivalry" in one sentence.

Thanks for sharing, BraveW. I like Glen Mason quite a lot. He is quite complimentary toward UM on the BTN, knows his football too. He and Holtz are the only competent coaches the Goofers have had that I can recall.

He was a good friend of Bo, as well.

I fear your overconfidence and in my own superstitious thought process, you may have cursed us for this weekend...that is all.
Honestly this seems like minny talking themselves up, rather than talking us down. <shrugs> We need to prove we can win and do it without waiting til the 4th quarter, until then, they can talk.

Boom. That's pretty big news, if already suspected.

Really strange that those comments come out like that with all the media lockdown most programs have. Particularly since they have not beaten anyone of note. I don't know why they would poke the bear (wolverine) with a stick, but hey man, thank you for the material.

The O line hasn't faced a player like him yet. He has a good reason to be licking his chops

Gardner does panic a lot.
October 2nd, 2013 at 2:50 PM ^
of many QB's that don't panic when they do not have a OL blocking for them. It affects passing, running and turnovers.
Regarding the bravado on the part of the Minnesota players, it could be a case of reverse pychology. Put the pressure on themselves to perform better than what the did against Iowa. Then again, I harken back to the Michigan players comments after the Akron games i.e. never happen again and so on. Not much good it did for them.
Bottom line is at the end of the day, good coaching and talent win. At this time, I am not entirely confident we have either.

I'm not really sure I trust your ability to assess coaches after your early returns on Beilein.
October 2nd, 2013 at 3:48 PM ^
That is not my definition of a successful coach. That is not to say he is a bad coach. He is average which based on the Michigan football team results is where Hoke would be.
Would you list either Beilein or Hoke as one of the top ten coaches in the nation?
October 2nd, 2013 at 4:30 PM ^
One good year?
One good year?
October 2nd, 2013 at 5:02 PM ^
The first Big Ten Championship at Michigan in almost 30 years, or the year he was in the National Championship game?
Average would mean the majority of coaches have done that....so can you say most coaches have coached in a National Championship game? That a conference title is the norm for most programs?
I'd have to spend more time than I'd care to on your negativity, but off the top of my head I'd say Beilein is a top ten coach. If you want to list ten guys you think are better I'll be glad to poke holes in it. But then you thought they were an early out in the tournament and didn't have a chance at the Sweet Sixteen so I have doubts about your analysis.
And no, I wouldn't list Hoke in the top ten yet. He's 4 games into year 3.
October 2nd, 2013 at 11:49 AM ^
but this is the same QB that led Michigan to a three touchdown win in their own house last year. Thompson had nothing in the box score for their last trip to Ann Arbor, which...yeah.
Nothing to get worked up over, but talk is talk unless you've shown you're able to back it up.
October 2nd, 2013 at 1:41 PM ^
... I'm just surprised they're being so honest about it.
October 2nd, 2013 at 11:54 AM ^
Um, has this guy not read anything about our team since the week after the ND win?
October 2nd, 2013 at 11:55 AM ^
No matter how bad we are, we always beat them. I'm glad they're getting themselves pumped up but they always lose to us and just got bludgeoned by a bad Iowa team

Michigan's worst team ever inside the Metrodome. . . . Pam Ward on the broadcast. . . . MIke Shaw and Brandon Minor running wild. . . . Zoltan Mesko's fake punt for a first down run. . . . Sam McGuffie with a big catch. . . . . K. C. Lopata with five field goals. . . . Justin Feagin rushing seven times for 49 yards. . . . Minnesota held to eight first downs. . . . And Nick Sheridan's greatest performance for Michigan to help the Wolverines keep the Little Brown Jug. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cu2SL3HwjbU

I think Iowa looks a lot more like an 8-4 team than a 4-8 team. Along the lines of MSU in my opinion with a good defense and a shade better offense based on stickier palms.
October 2nd, 2013 at 11:56 AM ^
If you sense some vulnerability in your opponent, why would you provide them some motivation to come out and give their best performance? I just shake my head in bewilderment at some of these comments.
October 2nd, 2013 at 12:02 PM ^
I don't really fault them for believing it. Or even saying it to each other. But multiple guys to the press? Just doesn't seem very smart. Particularly coming from Minnesota. Going into a a road game.
Individually you have a bit of the Devin expects/predicts beating OSU thing going. But all together it doesn't seem like a way to keep your opposition as unfocused as they've been.

loose lips likely to sink the ship. Don't be surprised if we shut Haggis's old sausage down and afterward some of our troops note that he was talking dookey, that they felt compelled to respond ON THE FIELD OF HONOR.
October 2nd, 2013 at 12:02 PM ^
I just read the comments section in the Star-Tribune article. We here are taking these comments much more seriously than the home audience up there.
October 2nd, 2013 at 12:39 PM ^
A fair number of the comments in the Star Tribune article were openly chiding players for talking that way coming off their loss to Iowa, but this was mixed in with the usual pining for Mason and someone who said "Play better and get beat by 40?". I just find it amusing that at least those 25 or so people who commented were rolling their eyes apparently.

Gardner on critics of his play as of late, "When you play as bad as I've played, you kind of deserve it."

These kerfuffels always make me laugh. What do you EXPECT them to say....."we're scared as Hell and we just hope we can find 22 players crazy enough to take the field on Saturday?"
Nothing they said wasnt true and nothing they said (other than the comment about Devin which was also true but still) is that inflamatory is it?
I think they're saying it more for themselves. Getting your ass kicked by Iowa can be pretty damn deflating. Sort of like Justin Tuck's proclamation that the 0-4 Giants are about to "run the table".......
