Mike Gundy's a Man who fears a handshake
Oklahoma State and Georgia are foregoing the pregame handshake. Gundy:
Our first concern was [we'll] have 115 guys out there and they'll have 70, it just takes one guy to pop off. Then I don't know how you're going to break it up. How do you control something like that?So is he saying he can't control his own team, or making note of Georgia's occasional antics of end zone celebrations, etc?

He'll figure it out. After all he is a man, he's 40..err 42 now.

Aside from a bunch of other reasons, look no further than last night to see problems that can arise.

I agree. If I have my team so fired up before the game the last thing I want is for something to be said between two guys that are so ready to go that they take away form a great game by causing a fight.

this thing is not needed whatsoever. It's just a cute little antic the NCAA encouraged to make them look good. It's not the worst idea I've ever heard, but it's not needed. I say that the captain handshakes are good enough. After seeing Blount punch a BSU player in the face, it's obvious some players can't handle it. Now, I think Blount is just an immature headcase, but that happens to be the way some people are. With Michigan and WMU, it won't be a problem. Some of the bigger games with more on the line and the guys are a little more fired up, though, may be an issue. I say it's a good call by Gundy to avoid the handshake.

He can handle it. He's 40.
...beat to the punch, too slow. I can handle it. I'm a man. I'm 36.

It's even better when you say it twice

yeah, i left out a " the first time through which screwed things up pretty bad. Trying to find what happened this time around.

Its a dumb idea. I hated shaking hands with opponents after games in college soccer. By the time I was an upperclassmen, I did my best to avoid it. Last night's game was a great example of what can happen and probably will contnue to happen - before and after games. "It ain't show-friends; its show-business!"

Kornheiser said the same thing. Hard to knock a coach for being honest, and it's hardly indicative of a lack of control. Same could be said anytime a player gets in trouble off the field ("can't you control your players, coach?") - short answer: no, not 100% perfectly all the time.

He's afraid that touching hands will spread swine flu.
September 4th, 2009 at 1:44 PM ^
But a person has to have it in order to spread it. I know you were being sarcastic but i'm just sayin'....it will.
Edit* you also have to then take your hands and put them in your mouth or eyes in order for it to enter your system.....so they could just wash their hands after.

the phrase "touching hands" only reminds me of "You make me touch your hands for stupid reasons"

I can understand shaking hands after a game, but before you are trying to convince your team that these guys are their mortal enemies and make them want to kill them. Oh wait.....but first go out and shake their hands and tell them good luck.....then kill the bastards! Stupid shit IME.

There's no shaking hands in football.
September 4th, 2009 at 2:00 PM ^
but I agree that it doesn't even belong in HS ball. There are other ways to respect your opponent.
September 4th, 2009 at 2:25 PM ^
There's also no crying in baseball, but things happen.
Handshakes in football are hard to monitor with so many guys and so few officials. It works out better in hockey b/c the refs can just jump in and quickly pull someone away if need be
September 4th, 2009 at 5:08 PM ^
but in Hockey it is way easier to actually kill the other guy if you get in a fight. I mean they got skates and sticks. If that doesn't spell death, then I don't know what does.
September 4th, 2009 at 2:25 PM ^
if individual players want to do after the game, NFL-style, fine.
Just another example of how pathetic the NCAA is. Focus on irrelevant stuff so you can ignore more important things. *coughreggiebushcough*

The NCAA should be working harder to prevent the spread of swine flu.
Btw, the subject line makes it sounds like Gundy has OCD.

thinking more along the lines of he's not a man and he's not 40 and he can't handle it. Maybe he just has a wet noodle hand shake and can'd handle the other coaches making fun of him.
