Michigan Youth Football Camp (June 17): Opinions?

Submitted by Naked Bootlegger on

Michigan is holding a slew of football camps IN ANN ARBOR* this summer:

We live outside of Michigan, but are planning to visit Ann Arbor on or near June 17.  I just discovered this date coincides with the UM 5-8 grade Youth Football camp.  My son is very interested in attending.  Any opinions from the board on how fun/effective/life-changing this camp is?  Is the full coaching staff involved with hand-on drills?  Current players?  Are any feats of strength competitions against the likes of Kalis, Braden, and Cole typically scheduled?

I personally think hearing Harbaugh's opening and closing remarks is almost worth the registration fee alone, but I would love to hear feedback from others who have experienced the camp.

*All UM Summer Football camps are subject to pending NCAA oversight.

While I don't have any personal experience with these camps, my brother took his 11-12yo son to MSU's youth camp a few years ago.  Yes, I know...  He lives in Mulliken, about 20 miles from the MSU campus and both he and his kids are huge UM fans.  But local camps...  Anyway, despite it being MSU, he said the experience was great and the kid loved it.  The entire coaching staff was involved in drills, Mork Dantoni spoke to the kids and parents, and they got the VIP tour of the football facilities.  It didn't make either of them an MSU fan, but both said the experience was worth it and they have no problem recommending it to others.

I suspect UM's camps wouldn't be any different, but YMMV - I just offer a second hand report to consider.  If you decide to go, let us know how it turns out, and have fun!

Harbaugh should invite Emmert and Sankey.

When they arrive, he should block the gate and tell both of them, in light of the new rule banning camps other than where the teams are normally based, that they're out of their territory.

And then, while he's at it, also that they're out of their league if they thnk they can stop HARBAUGH.

I am all for inviting Sankey and Emmert to the camp but giving them directions to the most recent incarnation of Leggs (or whatever it is called now), or indeed Henry The VIII in Inkster. We also need someone on site who can get photos of either of them enjoying the show, and then someone who will write the corresponsiding story for blogosphere consumption.

I'm driving my younger brothers into enemy territory and taking them to MSU's camp this year. Family in East Lansing set it up, so, not my idea. If anything I think they'll regress in terms of intelligence.

You have to remember one important factor of youth football camps....they are first and foremost fundraisers. They benefit the football program financially..

My son attended a Brady Hoke U of M youth camp several years ago and he had fun. It's a cool experience for the kids. They get to see the coaches, players, and facilities that the team uses.

Does anyone know if, on top of it being a fun experience, they do any substantial coaching? My son started at corner at a large MI school as a junior, and may want to go if he'll actually learn something useful to up his game for senior year. He's not looking to get recruited, not quite at that level.
