Michigan vs Miami (OH) 2004: Henne's debut highlights

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Just put up highlights of the 2004 game against miami university. It was the debut of Chad Henne who was thrown into the starting spot when Matt Gutierrez got injured game week in practice. You know the drill, let me know how I did and share your thoughts and/or memories of this game.

My next video is going to be the game against san diego state in 2004. It will be the only copy of it on the internet.

This was my sophomore year at Michigan. I remember the team coming out on the field and asking my friend, "Wait, is that Henne? Starting??" Turns out he did pretty alright. I think he actually managed to be underappreciated in his time at Michigan, just because everyone gave Braylon/Hart so much of the credit for our big wins (which they earned, to be fair).

This started my streak of going to consecutive season openers that will come to end this year. Still rememeber calling my dad, who was watching at home, why Hene was in the game.

I loved Henne, but it always seemed like he took an absurd amount of sacks. Can't even count how many times I screamed "THROW THE DAMN BALL AWAY" during his career. Also, "Their offensive line is bigger than the Washington Redskins'!", that's some manball for you.

Big is one thing (and that they were), agile is another entirely:

Can't play manball 'less you can *move* a little bit. Only Baas and Long did that at an NFL-level for a long stretch. The tide seems to be turning with Lewan, Schofield, and most likely a bunch of the '12 and '13 guys.

This sounds like a dare to WolverineHistorian

I've asked him a few times and have seen requests on his page about the game and he said he does not have a copy of the game. I just ordered one on DVD from Art Vuolo's shop so these two games bring closure to the 2004 season.

I remember walking to the game and hearing people in the crowd saying they heard rumors that Gutierrez was hurt. Then, it was finally time for the offense to take the field. I heard all kinds of things in the stands.

"What happened to Gutierrez?" People pronouncing Henne as "Hen" and no one correcting them because no one knew! It was all confusion! Kid could play.

and the legend of Mike Hart began. So much talent all over the field, it brings back all the memories of how Lloyd squandered so many years of high caliber personnel. Gutes gets hurt and you have Henne and Clayton Richard to back him up. And who could forget Shazor, my second favorite Detroit kid behind Brandon Graham. Good stuff... Thanks for the video

I recall reading the day after some sports writer or other said, to paraphrase:

"Poor Matt Gutierrez may want to start looking for a new team. Sometime in the 3rd quater, this became Henne's team. He played like a senior and a skilled one."

How true. Still so sad/mad that somehow, some way Henne, Hart and crew couldn't pull out The Game.

So I watched these highlights and I couldn't figure out why I couldn't even vaguely remember this game, then I realized its because I was in Iraq at the time with zero internet or tv! Ahh good times! Thanks though it was fun to watch for the first time.

I was able to switch out a patrol with a buddy to watch The Game that year and the bowl against Texas? I believe. They were on but it was more about being on patrol or missions or some other thing while they were on. With the time difference I think they were on late at night and that's when I was usually out.

I was deployed to Afghanistan (April 12, 2005 - April 09, 2006) and was stationed at Bagram Air Base....I was able to watch (live) 8 out of the 12 games Michigan played that year.....I was able to follow the 4 (Eastern Michigan, Minnesota, Penn State, and Indiana) I couldn't watch on gamecast/livetracker, etc....

Minnesota and Penn State that year were NOT games you wanted to follow on a very slow internet connection....for exact opposite reasons....

Something I always love seeing is the body language of the players when they celebrate.  In 2004, they took a slow, arrogant approach to celebrating.  I liked it.

Constructive criticism- Please trim more fat from the highlights. Two yard runs and incomplete passes from Miami aren't something I care to relive. There's really no reason for these to be longer than 10-15 minutes, Wolverine Historian's videos were better when they were more concise.

I wish WolverineHistorian would do a few losses. I know, nobody wants to relive a loss and I know he's stated he doesn't do losses but he puts the videos together so well and there were a lot of exciting games over the last 20 years we unfortunately came out on the losing end of. There were still a lot of bad ass plays in a lot of those games. Win or lose.

Mike Hart running in the last 8 minutes of the 4th quarter, and Manningham's huge catch to set up the last field goal attempt. I will never forget the cascade of emotions that day, but Mario's catch may have been the best one ever because you expected Henne to get it to him. The result is somewhat paradoxical of the direction of the program thereafter. Michigan was #5 and expected to win every game... That arrogance and attitude was cracked for the very first time that game. The following week, Dennis Dixon turned that crack into an irreparable gorge that began the end of the LC era and the beginning of a healing process that this fan base desperately needed. RR came and failed, but the process has reborn an iconic program that is now hungry again. Hungry to compete at a national level.

Much better context this time but why do you continue to show the extra points?  They are neither relevant nor exciting unless there is a miss. Otherwise much improved and thanks as always.

I still remember watching this broadcast and my jaw dropping when the announcers said a true freshman would be starting at QB for Michigan in place of Guitierez. I was like "Yeah? Fuck!". Then by mid-game, I was all like "Fuck YEAH!" Not a bad debut for an 18-year-old who was playing high school football just a 8 months prior.
