No one's callling him the next Urban or Dabo.  But he has a lot of potential.  He's spent his head coaching career at Toledo and ISU, which means he's going to be at a talent disadvantage against pretty much every ranked team he'll face.  The fact that he's beaten Oklahoma (in Norman even), Texas, Oklahoma State, TCU shows that he can compete with the big boys regardless of the talent he's working with.

People are talking about this guy like he walks on water. I think the guy is a very good coach and would definitely interview him, maybe even hire him. But my god people are like Matt Campbell or bust and if anyone points out any flaws in him the excuses start coming out.
He also doesn’t have a conference championship and I will let everyone in on a secret. The MAC is not a great conference and for P5 the Big 12 sucks. A team like Oklahoma is equivalent to an Iowa in the Big 10

He has shown to be a good coach I’m just not ready to hire this guy yet and pay him 8-9 million a year like people have suggested. If we are going to hire a new coach let’s do an extensive search and make sure we are really getting the best coach out there   If it proves to be Campbell fine

1. Urban Meyer never finished higher than 3rd in his division when he was in the MAC

2. Saban had one good season at MSU and didn't win a conference title

3. Oklahoma beat OSU's ass in Columbus just a few years ago. Comparing them to Iowa is asinine.

I don't understand this ridiculous criteria people have when hiring a coach here. Nobody thinks he walks on water.

I would happily lose every game to Iowa if it meant we beat OSU occasionally

Campbell's defense isn't great against pro style teams but makes hay against Oklahoma and OSU passing spreads

Would much rather have a bad match-up with Iowa and Wisconsin who we'll only see a handful of times a decade, and have a plus match up with the rest of the big ten and country

I'm still butt hurt over the 1986 tournament game. All the hype was Michigan coming out of the Midwest to the final 4 that year and then laid an egg. I couldn't even be mad (at the time) because it was Johnny Orr.

I graduated from UM in Dec 1985 and enjoyed getting a good paying job. Then, two weeks into my work experience, watched Johnny Orr outcoach a better UM team led by his prodigy Frieder who had more talent but was never ready for one-and-done style situations.

Not taking away anything from Johnny O as this was a very solid ISU team, but a team that beat Bobby Knight 80-52 just 8 days later should not have been rubber out.
