Michigan v Nebraska game experience

Submitted by SagNasty on October 10th, 2021 at 3:10 PM

I was at the game last night and it was extremely loud. Nebraska fans were very salty. They complained about every single call that went against them and they were saying things like the B1G wants Michigan undefeated. Which is hilarious. Many of the Nebraska fans around me did not understand the delay of game penalty on Nebraska’s defense and said they had never seen The shared possession call before. Harbaugh was in the officials ears all night and at several points in the game they put Harbaugh up in the big screen so the crowd could react. We sat near the student section and they were chanting F&$k Jim Harbaugh throughout the game.

Their House announcer is extremely loud and very annoying. They were much more hostile than what I experienced in 2012. Although the worst I experienced was people throwing small empty  plastic bottles. After the game it was mostly tame and even got a few good game comments from Nebraska fans.

Who else went? What were your experiences?

I've only been there once, way back in 2002 in the first game post-Eric Crouch, when they hosted one of those kickoff games a week early. I had heard that Nebraska fans are polite and classy.

Many, I'm sure, are: everyone I know from that region is great. But the actual experience I had with fans in the end zone was just annoying. They whined, they talked pompously about stuff, they of course had opinions about 1997. I've had better experiences as a neutral fan. Honestly, I've been at OSU where the fans near me (as distinct from the barbarian hordes that populate most of the area) were nicer than that.

I don't have recent experience, so YMMV, but I thought Nebraska's game experience was more impressive to themselves than it is to outsiders. Which isn't bad--college football in person is just awesome, I don't care where you go--but it didn't measure up to other experiences.

I was at the game last night.  I had a great time.   It was the first time I was ever in Nebraska and it is a college game day (and night) experience that every college football fan should experience.   The stadium is loud and when Nebraska was fighting back the stands were shaking.  A lot of loud piped in noise and not much band but that is the trend these days.

The Nebraska fans in town were extremely polite.  All day I was welcomed to Lincoln and wished good luck almost as if it were an inside joke.  Yes I was told we were weasels and was asked stupid questions by a drunk kid while I was having dinner. When the drunk kid asked if thought our win against Wisconsin was impressive I told him I heard that the Badgers had a solid lead over Illinois.  I did tell him to bet on the under so I was wrong there.

The fans booed Harbaugh but what would we do if they put urban on the Jumbotron.  Also I think we are the last fan base that can object to utterances of f$ck.

I’m glad we won.   It made the flight home more fun.

My dad and I were on the press box side — not near the student section — but the fans around us were, uniformly, incredibly nice. Had lots of people wish us good luck before the game and even more wish us safe travels home afterward. Quite a few came up to us out of nowhere wanting to know if we were having a good time. They complained about the officiating but almost always justifiably. The guys around us acknowledged when Michigan got screwed on calls too.

Agree with the OP that the place was extremely loud. Great atmosphere. Got a kick out of watching the team dance and taunt a little during Thunderstruck. I could tell some of the fans around us were offended by that but didn’t want to complain about it too loudly around us. Anyway, overall fantastic experience. Will definitely try to make the short trip up from KC next time the team plays there.

I had a great time at the game. The atmosphere was electric, and the Nebraska fans were ridiculously nice to my dad and I (I got hugs from people leaving the game, they definitely needed it). They were also extremely ornery about the refs and wanting to finally win a big game.

They also knew their football. A Nebraska fan next to me said, "forgive me if it's taboo to say, but that Corum kid looks like a fast Mike Hart out there." I had to laugh and agree with him.

The tailgating and pre-game scene was a bit underwhelming, and felt their students kinda sucked. But the stadium/game itself was extremely fun and would recommend going in 17 years when Michigan plays there again finally.

Agreed on how they really know their football. When I visited there for our game in 2012, one of them struck up a conversation with me about Chad Henne and how he was a 4-year starter and said it was cool that Jake Long came back for his senior season in 2007 even though he would have been a first round pick as a junior. It surprised me that they would know/remember that, since Nebraska wasn't even in the B1G back when Henne and Long played.

I was at our game against Neb back in 2013; took my father out to a few bars before the game (late afternoon kickoff).  Saw a number of Neb fans there... many (if not most) being loud, obnoxious & rude (and this was close to lunchtime/early afternoon).

The day wasn't made any better with Al Borges running the ball into a brick wall ~40 times that day for almost no gain.

I went with my son. I've been there quite a few times as a kid back in the 80s and 90s. I was there in 2012 also. I must say, there has been a definite change in the attitude of the fanbase, especially those in the under 50 crowd. It's easy to be classy when you are winning championships. There were multiple grown men acting like complete psychos where I was. Every little thing became a reason to scream, and many times they were unaware of the rules regarding replay, timeouts, the last penalty after the play on 4th down, many fans didn't understand why it was Michigan's ball. Every older fan was very nice to us, only one fan ever said anything rude to me. I am envious of how loud they get, and not just on 3rd down, but almost every play. The announcer was too much a part of the game for me, loud music every play gets old, you never heard the band. The stadium is cool once you get to your seat, but moving around is a complete cluster of narrow paths and ramps of concrete and steel. Props on the trough urinals which are a memorial stadium institution, but that stadium is not designed for 90,000 people to walk around in

You’re experience was very similar to mine. We had a hell of a time getting to our seats. At one point we had to get our tickets rescanned to exit the stadium to go out to get around to another gate. Then when we found our section we were stuck on the ramp heading into the stadium so long that we missed the flyover and pregame stuff.

How could they not understand the shared possession rule?  It's the same as when your QB throws a pass and your receiver and an opposing defender catch it simultaneously.  It's always awarded to the offense.  That rule has been around forever.

The B1G wants Michigan undefeated?  F*cking hilarious.  That's Penn State fan level of delusion.

I was wondering why Michigan got possession after Dax's taunting penalty too. My only comparison was the one Ojabo got in the Western Michigan game, which I believe kept a drive going. I almost had a stroke when they said there was a flag. How was one penalty different from the other?

taunting penalty was after possession went over to Michigan on the failed pass, surprised people don’t understand that.

also we have to quit freaking taunting the other team, we could have had a call on Hawkins after the 4th down play by the goal line on he stopped Martinez he taunted him out of bounds, we have had several of those penalties this year and they have to stop.
celebrate with your Tran, but be classy

If Hawkins would have received a penalty for that taunting, the ball would have been moved from the 4 to the 2.  Not sure it was going to make a difference...  BTW, that was a GREAT stop!!!  A little taunting there was probably okay!

Was at the game. Tailgating was underwhelming but an extremely relaxing and friendly atmosphere. Lots of Nebraska fans walked by and said good luck.  A guy did yell fuck Michigan at us but then multiple Nebraska fans came over and apologized for the guy.
The game itself was extremely loud and I felt had an electric atmosphere. A lot of piped in noise but I thought the fans responded really well to it. The PA announcer was a gigantic homer. Which is fine but like on the shared possession call he called in Nebraskas ball multiple times. Almost everyone around me was friendly. There was a couple young guys (in their 20s I would guess) who were annoying throughout the game. Fuck being the most prominent word in their vocabulary. And really attacking Harbaugh for anything and everything. I mean rich rod had a better record at Michigan than Scott frost does at Nebraska.

After the game, lots of Nebraska fans said good game and wished us good luck and hopes that we’d beat Ohio st.
Getting out of the stadium was a mess. Way to narrow to move 87k out. And then the area where the stadium is located is where all their athletic stadiums are located and then bars and parking garages and not much else. It was a disaster trying to get back to Omaha. Took us over 3 hours.

Of course some Nebraskans are going to say "Good luck" to you. You seem like too nice a person who knows that life doesn't end with a win or loss -- that makes nice people want to be nice.

Glad you represented M well and have a few Nebraska fans positively rooting for us against OSU.

Now go get some work done.

I thought the game experience was amazing, I put it right up there with the white out at Penn State two years ago. The fans around me were incredibly nice and gracious. It was loud and energetic the entire game. I did think the fans lacked some football knowledge (they didn't understand that Cade threw into triple coverage because it was a free offsides play etc.). I thought it was very cool how you could just walk right down to the field and walk around on the track. We didn't find any actual tailgating, but the bars around the Haymarket area were bumping leading up to the game. Overall, I thought Lincoln was pretty forgettable but a great game experience.

We sat in the end zone section 41 with mostly Michigan fans. There was an older couple behind us that was nothing but nice. They talked to us throughout the game and agreed that the referees were absolutely horrible and both times had bad calls against them. The crowd was very loud for most of the game (second period a little quiet) but the second half was electric. When we arrived on Friday and went to a local bar, we walked in and two people came up to us and shook our hands welcoming us to Lincoln. This repeated itself several times on Saturday at tailgates on Barry's roof top, Rosie's and the Railyard. The people in Lincoln were very hospitable and seemed almost too nice. After the game on Saturday, we had a drink then walked a bit to get out of traffic. We tried to catch an Uber/Lyft/taxi but no one came. We started walking the rest of the 4 mile walk to the hotel. We got half way and saw a younger guy going out to his car. He agreed to take us back to our hotel and would not accept any money or gas for his car. I have not been to Madison or Iowa yet, but this was the best B1G game day experience I have had.

Was there with 15 buddies, incredibly fun city. Hotel had 2 hours of free drinks Thursday and Friday, place was packed and party both nights. Even brought a hot dog cannon into the hotel, absolutely wild. This was my 14th and final big ten stadium I’ve been to for a Michigan game and the people here were so much nicer than any place I’ve ever been. It was insane how many people said good game after the game, made sure we were having a good time and made sure no one was being mean to us. They genuinely wanted us to enjoy the game and our time in Lincoln. I cannot say enough good things about the people. Stadium was loud, awesome environment. Bars were great and packed, good Michigan presence around town all weekend. Can’t wait to come back.

I was there. Section 108, mid level on the Nebraska sideline.

Impressions:

  • It was very, very loud on big plays.

  • Nebraska & their fans wanted this win BADLY. And they were livid with the refs. After all the reviews in the 2nd Quarter it got wayyyy more hostile in there. Every time we gained any yards, on any play, a nitwit behind me screamed “nice play refs! Cheaters!”

  • The atmosphere was pretty great & the parts of the stadium experience that are handled by the control booth went off very well. Good videos, cool light shows, piped in lots of music.

  • Their band is lame & a complete non-factor. I don’t even remember them playing anything throughout the game, and I was sitting near them. Was all piped in music. Student section seemed smaller/more indistinct than most schools too.

  • Overall, the fans were nice. Miles better than you’d get at any of our rivals. But not THAT nice. They definitely boo-ed our team when we entered pregame (I thought I heard they traditionally cheer?). And people hate Harbaugh and were screaming about him often. Fuck Jim Harbaugh chants went up several times.

  • Post game we got a few snide remarks and a few good games.

  • The Nebraska campus itself is pretty pedestrian/blah, but Lincoln is a very nice college town & has a lot of restaurants, fun bars, and outdoor seating.

  • Memorial Stadium is great. Though long lines getting out. We stayed a while just sitting in our seats to wait it out, but if you actually wanted to leave quick it would’ve been traffic jam city.

  • Weather was PERFECT for a night game. Completely comfortable without needing a jacket while also never being hot.

most memorable insult towards us was in the 2nd quarter pulling away a guy yelled “God, I can’t wait to watch Ohio State kill them again.” I decided against it, but was very tempted to yell “well, they’re going to come in here & kill you first.”

Eh, I’ve been to Lincoln several times. I’ve seen them against KSU back in the day and against UM twice now. I took my kid for the first time last night and as always, the fans were great. Even walking out after that heartbreaking loss, fans were asking my son if he had fun and I heard “thanks for coming” so many times, I started to feel bad. As always, their are dipshit fans everywhere, but for the most part, there isn’t a better place to take a young kid to a road game than to Lincoln.

also, they were real fucking loud this game. Way louder than I remember in the past. My son and I both had a blast.

My experience was great. The fans were great.  Sure they booed the refs, and some of the play calls, but every fan I interacted from Friday night to Sunday morning was great.  They take pride in being nice.

I was at the game with college friends. Their fans, in general, were friendly before the game and the majority were civil during the game, but there were several grown men acting like complete psychos in our section. We were cheering for UM, but said nothing to them or nothing bad about Nebraska, but these guys were staring us down and hurling profanities at us from the 2nd Quarter on. I also thought the crowd was over-the-top with their booing and blaming the refs for the loss. I also wasn't impressed with their knowledge of football. I will say that several people around us apologized for the behavior of these crazy guys around us. I think their emotions got the better of them. I liked the Haymarket District and the bars and restaurants in that area. We had no problems at all after the game. In fact, many fans wished Michigan good luck the rest of the season.

I was there, had a great time. We were in section 18 in the end zone, just to the right of the visitors tunnel. Easy access down to the tunnel so got to watch the team run out up close after halftime.

The stadium was very loud. I was getting pissed at a buddy who kept texting me how Cade and the O were playing like shit. In that environment I was very impressed at the lack of delay of game and false starts on O, as well as the communication on the OL.

Fans were super nice. Had one asshole behind me who thought it was an incredible burn to keep yelling about Harbaugh's khakis (he eventually noticed JH wasn't wearing khakis). After one such sick burn the nice old lady in front of us turned around and said to us, "He's an ass."  Pretty clear that they had heard this clown before and appreciated his wit even less than we did. Comments before and after the game were almost uniformly positive.

Runzas were ok, I thought the Valentinos pizza was meh. My buddy had the hot dog and said it was great, and he's somewhat of an aficionado.

Echo what others say about getting back to Omaha. We pulled into our hotel at 1 a.m.

Tailgating seemed largely nonexistent except in big donor lots. The bar scene in the Haymarket was a blast, though. Great people, lots of fun to watch the end of UT-OU and Ole Miss-Arkansas, and then the PSU-Iowa game. A different pregame experience but very enjoyable.

The Thunderstruck extravaganza at the end of 3Q was awesome. Loved seeing the team fully engage in the adrenaline boost.

All in all great experience. I've been to PSU, ND, Wisky, NW and Sparty, this was up there with the best of them.
