Michigan Swimming destroys MSU, Purdue OUTDOORS in 57 degree weather

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

The beginning of October means that Michigan Swimming & Diving is officially underway.

Michigan opened the season in East Lansing today, but in a very, very rough environment--OUTDOORS in 57 degree weather (not accounting for what it feels like wet) against Michigan State and Purdue in the MSU Outdoor Invitational.

The Men have won the last 5 B1G Championships and are on a 44-meet winning streak (counting today's wins) that dates back to January 2011. Michigan has had perfect seasons each of the last 4 years including a National Championship in 2013.

Business as usual today. The Wolverines took 11 of 13 events in this tri-meet, including six individual wins by Wolverine swimmers. Michigan set eight pool records today at MSU's IM West Outdoor Pool, as well.

The final totals resulted in a 148-87 win over MSU and a 144-91 win over Purdue.

Michigan has beaten Michigan State 39 straight times, a streak that started back in 1977-78 when Cliff Keen Arena was home to Michigan Swimming as it was then known as Matt Mann Pool. Michigan is now 85-5 against State all-time.

Michigan has NEVER lost to Purdue, improving the all-time record against the Boilermakers to 58-0!

The Women also competed today aginst the same two opponents as Mike Bottom not only serves as the Men's head coach, but the head coach of the Women's team as well.

Michigan easily disposed of MSU and Purdue, 156-80 and 138.50-97.50 respectively.

The Women are now 38-2 against MSU all-time and 9-2 against Purdue. They have beaten MSU 28 straight times.

W-L records are determined by head-to-head or tri-meets.

Michigan hasn't dropped a meet since January 2011.

The B1G Championships are a conference-wide event and the NCAA Championship meet is contested between 40+ teams.

State has heated whirlpools nearby, the air temp might have been 57 but the water was 80+ and within moments of getting out......hot tub.

Second, State has completely sucked at swimming my entire 40 years of life, apparently not as much as Purdue though.

That's reassuring as I was seriously worried about the athletes once they got out of the pool.

It's been a really cold day if you put 50s in the proper context. We were having hot weather a week ago and didn't have much of a transition to the cold as we usually do.

I've taken each of my kids on a ski trip when they turn 9.  The first kid was brave enough to get out of the outdoor hot tub and sit in a snow bank for a picture.  The next two did it but rubbed snow on themselves before running back to hot tub.

The youngest went swimming in the outdoor pool and wasn't alone - a lot of kids were there.  It was cold enough for snow by the sun and the water was warm.

In the Midwest, absolutely. I was stunned when I heard this was going to be outdoors when the schedule was released.

Hot tubs nearby or not, it's still pretty ridiculous to me. However, nothing stops this program. Michigan Men's Swimming & Diving has a history of dominance.

19 National Championships, 39 B1G Championships, a 665-120-7 all-time record, 616 All-Americans.

Mike Bottom is 60-3-1 here and 40-1 against B1G teams.

certain State is the only program with an outdoor pool in B1G, maybe Maryland.  State's pool dates back to the 1950's, recently refurbished (with heat added).  I'm sure it was state of the art back then.  Its more of a IM/recreational pool than competition.  Though its certainly set up for competition.

It sits directly behind the West side of Spartan Stadium if you ever want a look at it, their regular pool is right indoors next to it.

pretty resiliant, I'm sure they had a good time with this.  For one they knew they would blow the doors off both teams and secondly its early so national qualifying times are probably the furthest from their minds.  I'm sure this was a fun thing for all involved to do

Remember this is a school who thought it was a good idea to play an outdoor basketball game, on an air craft carrier, against North Carolina.

Would there be much of a difference from swimming in heated pool on sunny day in October versus playing football in the driving rain on the 3rd weekend in November? Hell, it might be better swimming in the cold than playing on a turf field when the air temps are in the low 90's.

The indoor pool looks like something out of Hoosiers.

Top two senior swimmers in the greater A2 recently committed:

Vandermulen (Skyline)  The Ohio State University

Zofchak (Dexter) The University of Michigan

Dexter kids smarter than Skyline kids....

Silly non-swimmers.  You swim faster when you're cold.  Competition pools are pretty frigid.

Granted.....usually it's the water that's cold and the air that's nice and warm.  But credit to Sparty for trying.

Anyway, as someone said above: I'd far rather swim in cool temps than play football (or most anything) in the stifling heat.

This will be the same conditions for the football team today, 55 degrees and basically in a pool. The storms that are going through the east coast have caused flash flooding in places, add 20-30 mph winds
