Michigan State RESPEKT thread

Submitted by BlueInGreenville on November 10th, 2019 at 7:46 AM

After years of disrespekting the hallowed institution that is Michigan State University, Coach Mark Dantonio harnessed the rightful indignation of the heavens and south central Michigan to beat us 8 times in 10 tries from 2008 to 2017, running MSU's record against Michigan to an impressive 36-70 all time.  Starting last year, Michigan fans unwound decades of disrespekt by publicly posting respectful messages about MSU on various interwebs message boards, and Michigan won a hard fought battle on both sides last year, with absolutely no bush league moves from either side, 21-7.

In the same spirit as last year, I'd like to kick off this week, where we'll be playing one of our three biggest rivals, by being respektful to Michigan State.  So MSU, I like the new neon green accents on the uniforms and think it's jazzy and handsome.  It's both retro (80's exercise culture) and a bold statement on the future of your institution.  A future, I'm sure, that will include far fewer extremely isolated incidents of sexual assault, rape, PED abuse, lying to investigators and the like.  We respekt you MSU.  You are respekted.

I’m not into kicking anyone while there down. Michigan State will come to Ann Arbor and play lights out. It will NOT be an easy game and Michigan under Harbaugh coming off a bye week is usually apathetic, uninspired and looks as if they never watched film of their opponent. Michigan didn’t exactly crush it against Maryland and a special teams TD made it look better. Bottom line is that Michigan has not proved anything yet beyond ND and this 3 game stretch will tell everything about this team. Michigan will win but it will be close. Especially with Stewart coming back because Brown will probably have a DL covering him

You're taking some negs, but only cuz people don't like truth.  Anyone that thinks this is going to be ND pt2, is way too confident.  This is the biggest game of spartys lives,  and mork and mindy will always have them up for it and will always do some ignorant bullshit. I do think Michigan wins,  but i think it's going to be closer than what people want and expect.

If we win by 24 it will be closer than I think.  MSU is bad but worse they wreak of a program that has quit and doesn’t believe in themselves or their coaching.

They aren’t the underdog chip on the shoulder program anymore.  They got used to success. Pride comes before the fall.

Michigan has the chip in this one.  Harbaugh and the team are going to put the pedal down.

Sigh

It's not just MSU.  Many opponents lose the fumbles, throw the pick sixes, have horrid play calling and boneheaded penalties against all the other teams and then don't do that against Michigan.

I desperately want a blowout similar to The Schembechler years where the game is pretty much over in the 1st quarter.  But I think Sparty will play much better...and I hate thinking that.

I don't know if Sparty will necessarily play better.  After all this is a team who got shutout over  nearly a month.

I do believe they will play with an hysterical amount of desperation becoming of a team that loathes us.

But Harbaugh and Co. have this game circled.   We have a solid defense and unless their entire playbook is little giants,  I don't expect them to accomplish much with their offense.

my biggest concern will be the weather.

Schembechler vs. MSU:

  • 69: 12-23 (-11)
  • 70: 34-20 (+14)
  • 71: 24-13 (+11)
  • 72: 10-0 (+10)
  • 73: 31-0 (+31)
  • 74: 21-7 (+14)
  • 75: 16-6 (+10)
  • 76: 42-10 (+32)
  • 77: 24-14 (+10)
  • 78: 15-24 (-9)
  • 79: 21-7 (+14)
  • 80: 27-23 (+4)
  • 81: 38-20 (+18)
  • 82: 31-17 (+14)
  • 83: 42-0 (+42)
  • 84: 7-19 (-12)
  • 85: 31-0 (+31)
  • 86: 27-6 (+21)
  • 87: 11-17 (-6)
  • 88: 17-3 (+14)
  • 89: 10-7 (+3)

That's 21 games, 17-4 record, but only 4 blowouts and probably 3 of them "over in the 1st quarter." Average score: 23-11 (+12)

100% agree. I’ll be happy with any win over an MSU team backed into a corner. These players have one game to salvage their season and their coach’s reputation. They’ve been practicing for this game every day since August. Michigan has been prepping for Ohio State since August, but not necessarily for Sparty. If MSU can clean up their bit mistakes and if Michigan reverts to their early season foot-shooting, MSU can win this. People also forget that Dantonio has no morals or sense of sportsmanship, so he will coach his team to play as dirty as possible. I hate that some people will be disappointed if we win something like 21-17, but this is going to be a rock fight and getting the W will be hard no matter what. Yes I want to blow them out as much as anyone but like the commenter said, this is not going to be Notre Dame 2.0. It’ll be more like Iowa 2.0.

I don't get the negs.  For the last 40 years I have watched MSU frequently (but not always) pull an uncharateristic sterling game out of their collective ass against M.  Also frequently followed by a terrible loss because they poured their hearts and souls into the M game.  After yesterdays's debacle the M game is now their entire season.  With Dantonio clearly on the way out they will put everything they have into this game.  I certainly hope to be wrong and see M run them out of the stadium, but I expect MSU to play their asses off.

I also believe this is an entirely reasonable take. Two games of reasonable play calling does not mean this offense is infallible. And they don't seem to ever watch film and see what the weaknesses are of the next team they are playing. And after a bye week? See Michigan-Wisconsin 2019.

The offense still moves in fits and jerks and does not pass the eye test as far as being consistent or explosive. Defense? Still susceptible to the big play and break downs. No games is given. Huge potential for this team year in and year out and it's frequently wasted with a complete lack of execution on a total lack of reasonable game planning.

MGoBlog before ND game: “ND is a playoff team...should have beat Georgia. They are gonna crush M and ol purple face gonna coast on their cupcake schedule into the playoff. OMG, even their future opponent Duke might beat us”.

MGoBlog after ND game: “Michigan has proven nothing”

It will NOT be an easy game and Michigan under Harbaugh coming off a bye week is usually apathetic, uninspired and looks as if they never watched film of their opponent.

Actually, Michigan is 3-2 coming out of a bye week with Harbaugh as coach with an average scoring margin of victory of 24 points.  How does that make them apathetic, uninspired, and unprepared?  The only instance in Harbaugh's 5 seasons where you could characterize Michigan this way is their game this season against Wisconsin...so sample size of one.  Quality analysis there.

I RESPEKT the amount of pride Dantoni oozes when he announces: "Next Question" at his press conferences. It shows more than anything he is in control of his locker room, his team Captains, the flow of the game, and the post-game media. The direction of his football program is consistent with the direction MSU in general. Mad RESPEKT all around.

My big thing about Dantonio is that he’s truly a class act. He’s humble in victory and gracious in defeat. Specifically, I think he truly respekts the game itself and everyone his teams play.

After the game in Ann Arbor in 2015, he simply asked where all the Wolverines were because he wanted to say goodbye. At least, that’s what I always figured.

Like Tressel, he is a tragic hero. Sanctity, class and discipline, on and off the field, will decrease in whole when he decides to step down.

Pride comes before the fall, but what if there’s no fall?  Mad respekt, coach.

The actual Spartans, you know...the ancient Greeks that lived in Sparta, were a barbarous people that owned more slaves than citizens, committed mass rape, shunned education like in Athens, and boys would become men by murdering a slave and hiding the body.

I totally think your campus is slightly better than the actual ancient Sparta...Respekt for you and the values found in your mascot.

Plus the actual Spartans were Spartans based on centuries of cultural development as opposed to Michigan State who adopted the Spartan moniker because locals didn't like the original replacement for Aggies, The Staters.

Yes, back in the 20's when the Michigan Agricultural College Aggies became Michigan State College the school held a public write-in contest to pick a new nickname; the one selected from submissions that included Bearcats, Statesmen, Bob Cats, Pioneers, and Fawns....The Staters.  Spartans came along later lead by a writer for the Lansing State Journal who hated "Staters" and refused to refer to them in his articles.

Michigan State athletic traditions are as vulgar and pedestrian as their fanbase.

When Dantonio finally walks away do you think he’ll use the Lou Anna Simon “none of this is my fault” or the Mark Hollis “I’m not running from anything”? Or a new line we haven’t heard yet.

I think if the spartyz push him out they might realize he was their best and /or only option. What coach would voluntarily go that cesspool? Only a coach with no other offers. MSU campus culture is below rock bottom right now. Alums I know won’t even let their kids go there.

Yeah, great thread. Gonna look really great when MSU has a scripted drive just for this game, scores a TD with it, then Michigan fucks around on offense like usual and this is an actual close game in the fourth quarter.

The only reason I have any confidence is because of what an implosion MSU currently is. Not because of Jim "0-2 at home against MSU" Harbaugh.
