3-3, 6 RBIs, 3 runs and a grand slam in the season opener to extend her NCAA record total to 11. Not bad. Aidan Falk hit two HRs. I think one was a 3-run shot. Tera is likely getting the start in the circle in this next game in a few minutes against illinois state.

Aidan Falk's two homers are a great sign. We knew when she was in high school that she had the potential to be the best power hitter in the nation. Put up good numbers last season and showed consistent improvement. A two home run game is always going to be an outlier, but it's damn promising on opening day. Wish she got a chance to play in last year's WCWS, but she definitely won't be sitting out this season.

Edit: Also, did South Bend Wolverine's season preview go up? Haven't been on here much the last few days and don't see it in diaries.

against a quality opponent. Romero is just amazing and fun to watch. Good to see Sara pitch and do a decent job. Looking foward to see what Tera does in the circle in the second game.

Go Blue.

a couple of concerns..Driesenga pitching was shaky and 3 errors for the defense..Driesenga just hasnt been the same pitcher since her sophomore year..shes just  not dominant any more and teams hit her fairly well...3 errors Ill just chalk up to opening game rustiness

The article explains it this way:

When it came to colleges, Sydney looked at Michigan, the idea of playing with her sister for one season not a deal maker but the prospect of playing in her shadow for three seasons beyond that not a deal breaker, either.

Going her own way, as Sierra had in leaving her familial and meteorological comfort zone in Southern California for Michigan, was ultimately a far more fitting way to follow in the footsteps of the sister whose influence mattered more than her shadow.

...on 2 walks, a bunt single, an outfield single, and 2 groundouts. M could probably win this game just by bombing away, but being able to manufacture runs like that becomes very important when you get to the postseason and go up against elite pitchers in almost every game.

In the night cap (ok well daycap )against Ill St ...Michigan plates 4 runs in the first to jump out front 4-0

4-0 Michigan after the 1st inning. SiLo walked and then illinois state had to intentionally walk Romero so it was 2 on with no outs. Escalated from there. Michigan has already batted around in the FIRST INNING.

I agree with this whole-heartedly.  Romo's power numbers would typically make her a clean-up hitter, but her on-base is so ridiculous that she works great higher up the order.  Christner's power numbers are almost as good as Romo's, and giving Romo a free pass when you've got 3 hitters who will all probably be double-digit HR players this year (maybe even 15-20) is playing with fire.  The best part is that Romo is such a team player, she cares more about on-base and RBIs than power, so she's a great person to have play that role.  Additionally, with Silo & Ramirez in the two spots before her, Romo gets plenty of chances to play clean-up herself.  It's a creative line-up, and one that is tremendously effective.

This.  She's one of the least talked-about members of this team, because she doesn't put up the big power numbers.  She was 4th on the team in runs-scored last year though, and similar in terms of average & on-base.  Plus, she can kinda hide in that 9-spot so that teams don't see her coming, since they have enough to worry about scouting the heavy artillery at the top of the order!  She easily could bat lead-off, and would probably do so for at least 2/3 teams in the NCAA, maybe more.  For us, though, she's perfect in that role of turning over the line-up, and I hope to see her thrive there all year long.
