A bit of snark at the beginning, but overall you can tell he isn't terribly impressed by the offense outside of the OL and Blake Corum.

His last bit of advice, that teams should sell out to stop the run, and if they lose spectacularly at least they'll be able to sleep at night...I mean...he's not wrong....?

I asked for that a few weeks back. He had it listed as such for a couple years, and I missed it when it was gone.

One of the funniest subplots of the last 10 years has been Rutgers' attempts to bluster their way through the conference. Between "allying" with Ohio State to hold satellite camps...where OSU just took the recruits they wanted and peaced out, to a recruit that we didn't offer having his own cover issue of some magazine announcing that he wasn't coming to Michigan...it's been hilarious.

And when they beat us in 2014 (did you know they named that game "The Upset"? Because I didn't until years later when some Rutgers fan was talking shit about The Upset and I thought he was referring to App State), they ran their mouths for YEARS as the rest of the conference whooped the ever loving crap out of them. This culminated in the 200 Recruits Game, which as we know ended 78-0 with our 3rd string fullback scoring the final points.

The last couple games haven't been as funny. In 2020, Cade led us to a heroic come from behind victory (just typing that makes me throw up a bit), and last year we obviously weren't paying them our full attention and they played us tight. Credit where credit is due.

So congrats Rutgers, I see you as the Snarky Rivals. Enjoy your beatdown this weekend.

Fuck him.  OSU is soft. Paper tiger. Can score 70 on shit teams, but still can't run the ball and can't stop the run.

They need to get a 2 TD lead and try to front run hoping the opponent panics and starts throwing on obvious down.

Punch them in the mouth again on both lines and we'll see what happens.

And if it's rainy, snowy, windy or all of the above...even better.

They are soft until proving otherwise.

And what he (and others) aren't saying is that its very fixable problem. Gotta self scout a little more in that area of the game and change some play calls.

Ohio State being butter soft is not fixable. They cant run the ball when they need to and they are hell bent on doing so because Harbaugh and Gattis bruised Ryan Day's ego when they called Ohio State soft. OSU's O-line and tight ends cant run block for shit and their wide receivers refuse to block for screens or downfield (Julian Fleming in particular was pathetic on Saturday).

Its the same finesse team as last year, which is completely fine in this era of college football except Ryan Day wont embrace it. He's going to pretend his team is tough while getting 2 yards per carry until they are in dogfight at which point he'll go full finesse with his fantastic wide receivers. Michigan will be able to stay in the game on Nov 26th.

Can’t say I’d disagree with ya. Penn state moved the ball very well and had they not have folded like a lawn chair, self induced, may have won. I still believe Days guys have lost Urbans toughness and it’ll show in November. Sure OSU could air it out to their nfl receivers and we look stupid. Just as easily we could methodically March up and down the field leaving their newly “vaunted defense” grasping for air like last year.

The 3rd and goal from the 8 highlighted is a microcosm of my frustration. Cade and the rz offense last year was abysmal. They brought JJ in against msu and it paid off immediately.

Cade had the same results in the red zone this year as he did last year. Meanwhile JJ was perfect. Now we are seeing the same abysmal results with JJ in the red zone that we did with Cade last year.

You look at the play call and it shows a problem. We have so many dynamic players and it’s like we either refuse to use them or don’t know how.

The wr’s and their hands seem to be the weakest link, but we can overcome that by leveraging schoon and corum while getting creative with Edwards and Roman.

It’s frustrating to watch. I know that it’s not an issue today. My concern is that it will be a serious issue on November 26. Pepcat 2016 showed us that it’s unlikely that Harbaugh is holding back the annexation of Puerto Rico.

We need to get creative and let JJ & co. cook a little bit or at least dabble with some seasoning.

Fortunately for Michigan alumni & fans, our current head coach has forgotten more about football than any of the rest of us will ever know.  Watch us stop screwing around inside the 20’s and running the ball right down opponents throats instead of throwing or running cute “trick” plays.

Bank on it.  Just in case you’re not aware, quoting Don Brown about anything to do with OSU might be questionable…

Pepcat 2016 showed us that it’s unlikely that Harbaugh is holding back the annexation of Puerto Rico.

I don't recall us breaking out the Pepcat against OSU that year, just against lesser opponents that we trounced anyway.  For OSU itself the game plan was solid, especially given that we had a QB who was far from 100% healthy.

It became clear to me by about the middle of the 2nd quarter Saturday that Harbaugh didn't respect MSU's offense enough to bust out some of our more creative stuff.  Look how we scored on the goal line against Maryland and Iowa, or the 2-point conversion against PSU.  We have that in our playbook, but it may not return for a while.

We ran the pepcat throughout 2016. The assumption/theory/narrative on here was that he would open up the pepcat against osu. Maybe have jabrill throw out of it or something. That never happened.

I used that precedent to highlight the point that what we see today is what we’ll see in Columbus

We ran the pepcat throughout 2016.

Yes, against a series of lousy opponents.  But we didn't use it in the OSU game.

I think it's pretty unlikely our red zone playcalling in this year's Game will look like Saturday night's.  Again, just this season we've seen more creative stuff against Maryland, Iowa and PSU.

Harbaugh's a guy who likes to establish tendencies against lesser opponents, only to break those in bigger games.  Remember when the pistol meant a run 100% of the time, until PSU, when it didn't?

I don't have a dog in this fight but they ran Pepcat against OSU 4 times in 2016. You can see it in the stats.

Peppers had 4 rushes for a total of 4 yards. It was very dispiriting and alarming for the coaches to trot that out there without something new.

I don’t understand why we bunch things up so much in the red zone.  It is already compressed.  It seems like the offensive coaches make it as hard for Michigan to score as possible.  I know that isn’t the case but it feels like it.  Frankly we don’t know how capable the wide receivers are in the red zone because they are never targeted.

You know, one of the things that makes MGoBlog special is the fact that many of the commenters here can string together words into coherent collections called "sentences," which are then organized into structures known as "paragraphs," in order to attempt to convey something called an "idea."

People aren't pasting in chapters from War and Peace here.  It took you longer to complain about the length than it would have taken to read through it to see if the commenter had anything useful to say.  If you don't want to read more than five words at a time, four of them misspelled, try MLive.  Or RCMB.

Can you imagine the freak out? UM can run the ball 400 yards. They can pass the ball 400 yards. Their defense can stuff your run. They download your feedback and adjust at the half. They have a top Special Teams. Man. That would be sweet.

But I would like a slow agonizing death for OSU by BC rushing 200 yards and 5 TDs.

The MSU secondary is super soft, but we barely passed deep.

Kind of wondering why the coaches are so hesitant. I know we have Corum/Edwards driving the entire length of the field, but if we're going to keep stalling in the red zone, fuck it, let's start trying for some deep balls.

UMForLife

This is not a video game. Can you imagine two deep balls results in pick six against MSU?

It is not like JJ suddenly forgot how to throw. He just threw for 300 yards two games ago when IU stacked the box.

Against OSU, all plays are game. I think they are going to pass more in the next few games. RZ issue is something we had last year. They figured out what works. They will find a way to do this.

So, when the defense loads up extra guys in the box to stop the run, and Michigan runs anyway, it's foolhardy -- "why don't they just take what the defense is giving them?"  But when the defense plays with two high safeties and 5-6.5 players in the box all evening, it's "why don't they have any balance?"

Hate to tell you… but you are in the "let's play like Madden" camp.  Runs are boring, passes are exciting!

Michigan dominated PSU.  OSU was in a game with them in the fourth quarter.  This is not a coincidence.  If you can run for 400 yards or pass for 400 yards, you should run for 400 yards, every single time.  It has a much higher correlation to winning.

This is the week to get the downfield shots going.

JJ doesn't need to connect on 50 yard moon balls if the recievers aren't getting behind the defense enough, but with that howitzer of an arm, he can easily connect on 30 yard frozen ropes up the seam, on slants and crossing patterns.

I'd like to see that more, specifically throwing it over the LBs while looking off the safeties as they start to crowd the line. We don't need "bombs" to have a solid downfield pass game, specifically with our run threat and rpo potential.

BluePhins

they were playing two high safety stubbornly all game. They dared us to run on them, guess what we did? We pounded the fucking rock down their arrogant throats. That's what this team is, show us your weakness and we will exploit it over and over again.

And that goes for qb play too. Show us single high press man, won't matter. Someone will get separation, will have the mismatch or both, and McCarthy has already shown he can read it. That's the error general fans are making right now. McCarthy has already shown what he is, but since it wasn't 400 yds with 5 tds there's uncertainty still.

I don't agree that he's been more inaccurate lately. The difference between 80% to 70% and 70% to 60% is huge, and he shows no signs of approaching 60. If you're looking for a big performance, just wait for it. But he's already there.

I made this comment to friends during the game Saturday. Casual football watchers say “Michigan likes to run, so just stack the box and make McCarthy beat you with his arm!” But for whatever reason, opposing DCs (not in Bloomington) aren’t doing it. So clearly there’s respect for McCarthy’s arm out there.

I also would love to see his passing take over a game, because it will be needed if we want to reach the heights we want to, but Harbaugh’s job isn’t to make the fan base more comfortable for future, potential big games.

My goodness.  Reading that it was the fifth time we beat them in the last fifteen games, was like a crystal bullet of consciousness.  Reminded me how we were losing the state, until Harbaugh got it back.  My goodness is right.   I lost sight of this a bit.     Thank God for Jim Harbaugh.

Love statistics.

Last 5 we are 3-2.

Last 10 we are 4-6.

Last 15 we are 5-10.

Last 20 we are 10-10.

Last 25 we are 13-12.

Last 30 we are 17-13.

Funny how the narrative changes depending on lookback period.

The 2008-2014 stretch was ROUGH. We had the statistically worst coach in Michigan history, and the feelingsball worst coach in Michigan history. RichRod won ZERO games against MSU, and Hoke won ONE.

This paragraph was worth a chuckle:

"The Wolverines finished with two sacks and seven tackles for loss. They still only have two sacks by defensive linemen in non-obvious passing situations this season. That may or may not be a thing, but it’s definitely something I’m going to harp on until CJ Stroud gets sacked on four straight second-and-two situations in a month"
