Michigan interested in Dakota Prukop? (QB Transfer)

Submitted by ScruffyTheJanitor on

Per Chantal Jennings, Michigan is interested in Montana State QB Dakota Prukop, who will graduate this fall.

Jim Harbaugh and Michigan also showing interest in FCS transfer Dakota Prukop. He'll visit Oregon this weekend. Ducks are his No. 1.

Commence "Is John O'Korn any good?" freak out if you are into that sort of thing.

Next year on the roster for QB will be Speight, O'Korn, Gentry, Peters, Malzone (I'm assuming Morriss transfers).  That is 5 guys, some with a ton of talent for 1 spot.

At LB next year we have Mike McCray,  Ben Gedeon, Alan Gant, Jared Wangler, Noah Furbush (not counting walk ons but maybe missing people).  That is 5 guys for a position that has 2 guys on the field at all times, requires backups to play even if no injuries and some games involves 3 guys.  The need is greater at LB, especially after what happened against osu.  We managed to win most of our games this year with sad jake rudock who was at best mediocre.  I'm glad he played well down the stretch but it featured beating one good defense (penn state) and still only scored 13 against osu.  We can have a special year next year with an elite defense and medicore QB, we can't have an elite defense with bad linebackers and none of the QBs on the roster are going to turn this into an offense that can beat good teams on its own.

Jake Rudock may never be confused with Tom Brady, Drew Henson, Chad Henne, Elvis Grbac, John Wangler, or Dennis Franklin, but he is not sad nor mediocre.

Why?

1. He believed in himself and took a huge chance. He could have just stayed at Iowa - they had a great year and will be playing in the Rose Bowl. How many people just stick in their rut all of their lives?

2. He had to dive into a difficult situation where he was under constant scrutiny and criticism. How people can actually do that? It is particularly easy to carp and fingerpoint from a sofa or chair.

3. He came through it with a pretty good record (9-3) and showed he can be play D1 ball.

4. He chose Michigan and lived up the tradition of good performance on the field, and class off of the field.

He may have been only on the team for one year, but frankly he has done more than enough to justify being considered a full time Wolverine.

Totally agree, Jake almost single-handedly won us at least 3 games (minn, psu, and IU) while doing the best he could vs OSU. I say Minnesota because w/o him before he was injured I'm doubtful speight can bring us back down more then 5 points.

He really kept us in the Utah game as well. When I was watching it real time I thought he was an absolute disaster, looking back 2/3 INTs were completely the receivers fault..... Cough cough- perry.

While he didn't turned the ball over vs MSU at all I really think that was probably his worst game. ( Although this may be because of how the whole game turned out) he missed two sure touchdowns on an overthrow to J-U and and under thrown completion to Darboh, on a piss-poor pass defense. When at that point in time I thought he would've been more adjust to the Timing six games in.

Without Jake we easily go 7-5 maybe worse, class act and stand up guy I would want my daughter to date.

The future is bright with Cap't Khakis my friends. Go Blue!

While I agree with you about having a need at LB, I don't think that the two are mutually exclusive.  If there is a good Grad Transfer LB, I am sure that Harbaugh will give that person a look.

As to the QBs that you listed, if you break it down, we aren't as "loaded" as you might think, especially at the most important position on the field:

Let's assume that O'Korn is the starter and that he is pretty good.  If he goes down, who is the backup?

Morris is likely gone.

Peters will be a true freshman, and should 100% redshirt.  Starting a true freshmanQB rarely goes well, and if we think that we have the talent to make a real playoff push next year, it is not happening with a freshman QB.

Speight / Malzone - do you really think that we have a shot at a playoff run with either of these guys playing significant time?  Not saying that both can't develop into contributors, but I very much doubt that either is ready to be the full time starter.

The point is the even if you think that O'Korn is a proven talent (since he did have a really good freshman year, and will have been practicing in Harbaugh's system for a year and a half), you need to have a solid backup in place (see OSU 2014).  In addition, while O'Korn may be very good, perhaps Harbaugh believes that Prokop or Hill represents a significant upgrade.  WHile I am not a fan of changing QBs every year, if either of these guys is that good, I can see how it might be worth it for one year.

Agree 100%

Our depth chart includes 2 guys who have started a game in their career; 1 to nearly disaster results in 1 of them.  Then it includes 2 Hoke recruits and a high upside low floor guy in Gentry.   And then a true freshman coming in.

There is a great chance 1 will transfer this year, and another (or two) in 2 years.  No guarantees with what we have.

Just amazed anyone question's a guy who was a QB, coaches QBs, and lives QBs - if this is what he sees as his best option I mean...

at attrition, the coaches probably have a very good idea of who's likely back and who isn't. They also see the redshirting freshmen practice. Their view of the QB situation next season might be quite different than ours.

Morris will probably not transfer. If he did I'm guessing it wouldn't be u till after next year. Really wouldn't make any sense to skip out on a UM degree when is NFL potential is next to none. Doesn't really matter for us either way.

Definitely agree though, pretty worried about our Linebacker and Running Back positions- really need a back with solid vision and acceleration completely lacked that this year and it showed.

I wonder if Oregon's fan base is concerned with the feelings of the current Oregon QBs they have since they are angling for 2 grad transfer QBs in back to back years.  Somehow I think not.

I think you are referring to Grad transfer linebackers, which has been covered on this blog. That is not a thing, or I should rephrase that and say "not a thing we want". If a linebacker isn't good enough to be able to play in one of the three or four spots on his current team, why would we want him to come play for us for a year? Just isn't a common thing with good Linebackers as opposed to a position like Quarterback where only one can play.

I suppose we can add our 7th QB to the roster but after watching the OSU game I'd much prefer an influx of linebackers to the team next year.  This to me was by far our weakest position.  We need big, strong, athletic linebackers...and I'm not just talking about 1 or 2...we need them across the board.  I'd also like a couple high end runningbacks since it seems MSU has three of them every year.  I'd say linebacker and runningbacks are the too weakest positions in my mind.

I'm cool with it. Seeing how long it took Rudock to get on the same page as his receivers, I'm kinda hoping whoever grad transfers in doesn't beat out the 5 returnees we are scheduled to have back next season.
