MGoMerry Christmas...what's on your menu today?

Merry Christmas MGoEveryone!

So what are you all cooking or doing for Christmas dinner today?

We're doing something different.  We moved away from turkey for Christmas a few years ago.  We've done ham one year and beef Wellington for a few years.

This year the MGoWife said she wasn't cooking anything so I decided it would be Korean barbeque for Christmas.  The first time I had was in Uijeongbu back in 1983 when I was a freshly minted 2nd Lieutenant stationed in South Korea.  After getting married I would occasionally recreate what I remembered it was like.

So for today, the beef and pork have been marinating for a week in the fridge.  We have kimchi, kkakdugi, diced raw garlic, bean sprout, rice, lettuce, bean sprouts and a couple of other Korean side dishes.  All 3 MGoSons will be here for the feast.

What are you all doing?

Watching Michigan-OSU highlights from this year's game another 20 times.

It's been sports porn for the past month and never gets old.

We could have won that game by 30+ if not for some ridiculous 4th down conversion by OSU.  Credit to their great receivers, but they just barely managed to even make the game look respectable.  It was a physical beatdown.

Glorious!

The wife made bread pudding to eat while watching my family open up Xmas presents. I don’t generally eat sugar (sober) so my blood sugar is off the charts right now. We’re doing prime rib and mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese. All from costco. Yep we’re those people.

We’re in Palm Springs on the second leg of our trip out west. Doing a Jeep tour of Joshua Tree and then dinner at LG’s Steak House.

Just came from Phoenix (highlight was Taliesin West) and then on to Death Valley…and ending up in Vegas with a visit to the Hoover Dam.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate from this nice Jewish boy!

Weather has been fine.  We were driving from Scottsdale to Palm Springs during the rain...so it didn't affect our trip.

Death Valley was a suggestion from a friend.  The first legs of the trip were going to be Scottsdale and Palm Springs...so then it became a question of going on to LA and then flying home from there...or turning back and flying out of Vegas...and the friend said we had to go Vegas because it would allow us to stop over in Death Valley.

DV is actually the part of the trip I've been most excited about;  hope it lives up to my expectations!

simple but spoiled here.  our eggs and thick cut bacon for breakfast.  for dinner we're having two of our pastured chickens.  and that's before our oldest dear daughter gets involved.  i have no doubt she will create some dandy stuff. i can see homemade chocolate chip pumpkin muffins in my future.  a few of the other mgobloggers have had those and i think gave them good reviews.

Only three of us today.  Big dinner was last night:  I made both the dough and made homemade tomato sauce using the last of my home grown tomatoes from my old home.  New garden under construction.

Smoked rib roast that has been aging in the fridge.

Braised beef short ribs with sweet and sour sauce, served over polenta.  Salad and vegetables on the side, of course.

Dessert:  shortbread cookies and  chocolates.

Big meal was last night (beef tenderloin with horseradish sauce, roasted redskin potatoes, asparagus with hollandaise, shrimp cocktail, eclairs for dessert).

Today it's probably every man for himself, so I guess that means eggnog and Kraken for ol' Vlad.

Kids will probably sleep til 11. My husband just went out for lox and bagels. I bought some Key West shrimp, portabello mushrooms, a load of vegetables and my son bought a large steak so I'll figure something out later, a sort of Christmas day "Chopped."

We are down in Destin, and the weather is amazing.

None of the restaurants are open, so my MGoWife pre-bought a big seafood dish that will go on later.

Hanging at the pool and trying out my son’s new Oculus Quest 2 are other orders of business.

Girlfriend is a nurse practitioner; she's working a 13 hour shift today.  Sister can't get Christmas eve off work and she's 3 hours away and does Christmas day with her in-laws so we wait a month or so.  So today I will be enjoying nothing special.  Whatever I happen to find is what I'm eating.  I shouldn't neglect to say that Christmas and I are not friends so I'm more than happy to enjoy time away from everything.  I have no kids so it's some nice peace and quiet.

This Jewish family has always celebrated on Christmas Eve, which was my father's birthday. From when I was a child, we always went to a Chinese restaurant (all that was open in the early years) and then a movie.

Yesterday, would  have been my father's 100th. He made it to 98. In his honor, last night his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren (around the world) all toasted him with his favorite Scotch, Balvenie (well, not the great grandchildren), ordered Chinese in, saw a movie, and shared photographs. At my house, we watched "White Christmas." That's because we saw our favorite Christmas move, "Meet Me in St. Louis," a couple days ago.

To all MGoBloggers celebrating Christmas, have a wonderful day. I hope Santa brought you what you were hoping for, and I hope it has a Block M on it.

I know it is an almost universal practice for Jews to go out for Chinese food on Christmas Eve (or Christmas Day as you're doing), but when we started in the late 1950s, we were pretty much the only ones. I jokingly gave my parents credit for starting the custom. But it caught on quickly, and eventually Chinese restaurants were packed. My cousin once was amazed that my parents seemed to know everyone in the place.

For main: 22oz USDA Prime Bone-in Ribeye prepared sous vide to medium rare and finished over ripping hot coals for crust/flavor.

For sides: Baked mac & cheese with cave aged gruyere and 3-year Vermont white cheddar. And roasted brussel sprouts and onions with a balsamic and honey drizzle.

For drink: Whistlepig Rye while I cook and a very, very nice cab sauv with the dinner

For dessert: an espresso cake with brown butter frosting. And vanilla bean gelato.

Crab Benedict for breakfast. That satisfies me straight through to dinner.

As for dinner, prime rib, Yorkshire pudding, horseradish, bacon macaroni and cheese, salad, and the banana cream pie for dessert.
