MGo(Couch)Burning
As if we needed to be reminded again that MSU is in the Final Four (and we're not), the UM Dep't of Public Safety is sending us a message on behalf of MSU as to how not to participate in general chaos/rioting...
In the words of Jimmy Fallon, "Really?"
________________________________________________________________
Dear U-M students:
As you may know, Michigan State University will participate in the NCAA Final Four in Indianapolis this weekend. It will be an exciting time for many people, including many students from other Michigan universities.
For those of you traveling to East Lansing, we would like to offer a few suggestions in order to help you stay safe and have a positive experience this weekend:
-- Do not block and streets or sidewalks.
-- Keep moving and avoid large crowds.
-- Know and obey the laws regarding alcohol use.
-- If you are of legal age to drink, use alcohol in moderation. Stay in the blue.
-- Stay low-key; don't draw unnecessary attention to yourself.
The energy of the competitions and the spirit of the games are contagious and create an atmosphere of celebrations. Please help us create a safe environment and celebrate with spirit and class.
You can find more information on 'Frequently Asked Questions: Celebrating During the NCAA Basketball Tournament' at: http://msu.edu/celebrations.
We look forward to a tremendous game on Saturday.
Sincerely,
Laura Blake Jones
Dean of Students

Executive Director

But what's funny, is that the above message is the same as the letter to MSU students, except this is what precedes the list.
MSU students celebrate the tournament with class. In fact, 78 percent of those individuals arrested in East Lansing during the 2009 NCAA Final Four Saturday semifinal were not affiliated with the university. To celebrate this year’s wins like a true Spartan, follow these simple guidelines and share them with your friends:
The real sadness is the need on their part to even collect statistics like this as if it's going to help change their shitty perceptions.
I find it simultaneously depressing/hilarious that MSU has a link off of their main web page directing their student body how to celebrate properly. http://msu.edu/celebrations
It's even more sad that they're making all the RA's wear t-shirts that say 'Spartans celebrate with class'
In fact, 78 percent of those individuals arrested in East Lansing during the 2009 NCAA Final Four Saturday semifinal were not affiliated with the university.Where's that thread started by that guy who asked for ways to respond to his "buddy" who claimed that Michigan fans aren't real fans because they're not alums? I got another one.
The myth of the Walmart Wolverine is once again proven false.
I lol'ed when I got that email too. Basically they're saying "go party with your MSU friends, but when they leave to go burn couches and flip cars, stay back and drink the rest of their booze."
My understanding is that Sparty is way too cheap and only buys keystone.
What does that say about someone who goes up to PARTY over MSU's team success?
Frankly, unless you could guarantee me a loss, that's the LAST place I would want to be.
Dude, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near there win or lose. Nothing good will come of being there.
I do love the taste of schadenfreude, but I enjoy it most on a couch with a delicious Oberon. I do not enjoy it while being assaulted by drunken 20 year-olds in ski masks while being tear gassed.
See what I did there? Eh?
In an effort to raise environmental awareness this year Spartans will be burning cars and couches with the biofuel: ethanol
enjoying the new slate of youtube videos sure to come out of this weekend of a bunch of idiot Spartans getting doused in tear gas!
I think the "MGo_____" meme is starting to get a little played out, especially for words that don't begin with a "b". MGoBlog is a fairly clever pun; "MGoRioting," not so much.
Better?
Yes.
Does MGoBlowMe work? (kiddin' - but I thought of it and couldn't stop smiling for some reason)
You're just MGoJealous you didn't come up with it first.
I think I got this link from this blog a while back. It still makes me laugh:
https://www.msu.edu/~creswel1/riotstatus/index.html
until the sparties couldn't control their emotions. That ended in A2 after riots in EL. I don't expect much difference any time soon. Better keep the football and hockey players off the streets.
...the '89 Natl Championship as I walked down South U towards the growing celebration, I marvelled at the crush of traffic heading into central campus along Washtenaw to join us students. I'm no Sparty apologist, but these figures do not surprise me in any way.
Now, why MSU officials think U-M students might just head up to EL to celebrate MSU's potential triumph boggles the mind. I guess they need to cover all their bases, but this seems a bit of a stretch.
As a 19 year-old freshman at U of M in 2000, I got in a car with some buddies and went to EL after they won the championship. Yes, we wanted to witness rioting. I realize this was dumb. There was also no rioting, unfortunately. Moral: even smart U of M kids do dumb things.
There was an article in the Michigan Daily last year lamenting the lack of rioting at MSU after they lost the National Championship game. The author and a car-full of friends traveled up to East Lansing, but they said the atmosphere was mostly jovial because the Spartans were just happy to be in the NC game. I imagine a similar aura will surround this year's activities, since even most Spartan fans had little confidence in this year's team and the run has been mostly a pleasant surprise for the Sparty faithful.
I think the idea of burning couches and fighting the riot cops has been so built up here in Ann Arbor, college kids want a chance to see the madness first hand; not necessarily to take part but definitely come away with a story.
All I can say as a Wolverine living near East Lansing (when school is out), if you are looking for a riot - head for Cedar Fest because rioting is the sole goal of that drunk crowd.
...for the feedback. I stand corrected. I guess these last two reminiscences sort of prove the point of MSU sending the letter to U-M after all.
Wouldn't want to be on that campus anyway.
Isn't this also the weekend for Cedar Fest? All of EL's finest will be busy with their video cams filming all of the high schoolers from neighboring communities coming into town getting drunk and trying to pickup other high schoolers that they think are college coeds. Woo-Hoo - sounds like a great time!
Would often coincide with Hash Bash. Much more mellow.
