As someone under 1000, I support this motion! Way too many threads not labeled OT!
August 11th, 2019 at 9:01 AM ^
I second that there are way too many OT posts here. I come for UM sports, not just football. Lately, I have had to wade through many more OT posts than I used to. The time of the year seems to be part of it. 500 seems to be enough to inhibit garbage like the last topic.

I agree, I haven't posted much and I'm well over 100. I think at minimum it should be 500 possibly a 1000.
If you have some great info you can also suggest someone post it for you in another thread.
August 11th, 2019 at 7:48 PM ^
1. Lock down all threads older than a month old.
2. Raise the point total to start threads to 2000.
August 11th, 2019 at 2:57 AM ^
I still think the number should be exactly one higher than the number I have. But he deserves the ban-stick for what he posted, regardless of points. I'm not a huge banning advocate, but if someone's going to start an item solely to troll like that, it's not like he cared about posting here.
August 11th, 2019 at 4:12 AM ^
I second the level being one more than I have, especially when I’m drinking after a game, win or lose.
August 11th, 2019 at 6:14 AM ^
Perhaps an interlock like the well-named ‘Blow-and-Go’ for cars?
August 11th, 2019 at 8:56 AM ^
When Michigan loses a game, there are plenty who start threads just to bitch (or, just to "troll" to those who are from the "better luck next year" crowd).
August 11th, 2019 at 3:25 AM ^
1,000 sounds good. But it should also be relatively easy to identify this type of point binging and negate it. Or even just set a 30-60 day waiting period to start your own thread.
August 11th, 2019 at 3:33 AM ^
I don't care to belong to any board that would let me start a thread.
August 11th, 2019 at 8:21 AM ^
Thanks, Groucho. Logged on to upvote. BTW, Woody Allen stole that line from him, but have him credit.
August 11th, 2019 at 3:50 AM ^
Take away the automatic point for making a post maybe? That way you have to post quality stuff to get to the level necessary to start a thread. Or a certain waiting period to start a thread
August 11th, 2019 at 7:32 AM ^
This is a good idea, Post quality content not random shit. If you raise the point total it would just take people longer to be able to post this, maybe two drunk evenings instead of one. I would also make it so the mods need to have an “activate” button before just allowing people to start threads so they can review posting history before giving rights.
August 11th, 2019 at 8:09 AM ^
Great idea! Also, maybe a lock on older posts. If it isn't a sticky thread, then after a period of inactivity on the post it will automatically lock. That way accounts like Jedi can't go back 2-3 months and post the same comment 150 times. They'd have to comment on more recent posts where they would be more likely caught and stopped before they became a problem. For good measure, put a point limit on commenting on sticky threads too just to prevent them from using those as well.
August 11th, 2019 at 9:35 AM ^
Fatman, apparently you can’t edit older posts if you go back far enough. Out of curiosity I went back to the fist page of posts to see if I could add a comment. And, there was the perfect post to comment on: “How many NCs will Rich Rod Win?” Unfortunately I couldn’t comment. I assume it has to do with the upgrade and not a set time limit.
August 11th, 2019 at 8:36 AM ^
A post doesn't get a point unless someone else upvotes it. Then they get the point for the post and the upvote(s). That way meaningless posts like "I agree" carry no value.
But I like the 30 or 60 day waiting period idea better. Most trolls don't have that level of patience.
August 11th, 2019 at 9:03 AM ^
I'm not sure that's accurate. There was a guy recently who joined just to troll, posted the word "Mike" 100 times on a thread from 2008 and then was able to make a board post. It took him about 30 minutes. Can't imagine he actually got any upvotes from that.
August 11th, 2019 at 9:10 AM ^
For clarification: Pretty sure that DonAZ is recommending a policy, not reporting what is already true.
(By the way, the Yoda fellow just posted the same thing 100 times in succession to gain OP privileges, so the same thing as the guy you mentioned.)
August 11th, 2019 at 9:34 PM ^
Fair enough. That makes sense.
August 11th, 2019 at 9:08 AM ^
August 11th, 2019 at 9:11 AM ^
The problem here and the flaw is you can upvote your own comments. Fix that and this doesn’t happen again.
August 11th, 2019 at 9:00 AM ^
This is what I was going to suggest. I actually did suggest it on another troll post which got deleted, and wasn't sure where was the best place to a suggest where it might be seen. So yeah. I agree.
August 11th, 2019 at 3:59 AM ^
How about 2500 points and a minimum length of account start-up...3 months.
August 11th, 2019 at 4:06 AM ^
250 points and a 30 days waiting period?
August 11th, 2019 at 5:07 AM ^
Why don't the moderators review and approve each thread before it appears on the board?
August 11th, 2019 at 7:38 AM ^
I feel bad for the poor mod who has to sift through 35 threads about an unannounced kickoff time for a game 10 weeks from now.
I dont think they want the extra work. And to be honest, if someone commits and the post isn't approved right away, I'd start to look elsewhere for news.
I think much higher point threshold and a waiting period is key.
August 11th, 2019 at 5:28 AM ^
Don't worry. The Mods will excise him with a one-way ticket to Bolivia.
August 11th, 2019 at 5:42 AM ^
In my opinion, too much pressure/responsibility is put on the mods for a good blog reader experience. They can't be online all the time.
There definitely should be a higher point limit and/or new user waiting period, esp during football and basketball season.
And once that is added, it would be nice to finally be able to "Ignore User" on our own (e.g., as Disqus, WaPo and other commenting systems allow), as sometimes (understandably) it takes quite a bit of time for the mods to ban obvious trolls, but there's no reason those posters should be polluting my view of the comments in the meantime. But that's likely a long way off, if ever.
August 11th, 2019 at 6:18 AM ^
I like the concept. By having a record of how many times a user is ‘ignored’, the mods will have an easier time of weeding out the bad actors. It also puts the rest of us in a position to help identify them.
August 11th, 2019 at 5:42 AM ^
1000 at least. I like 5000.
Time that account is open then becomes unnecessary.
August 11th, 2019 at 5:43 AM ^
Raise it to 500. In the meantime, cave this Yoda asswipe immediately.
August 11th, 2019 at 9:10 AM ^
August 11th, 2019 at 5:57 AM ^
Trash would be quite the understatement. One wonders what the hell goes through peoples mind(or lack thereof) sometimes. Geesh!
August 11th, 2019 at 6:25 AM ^
Remove the points threshold completely and make it time based. 6 months or 1 year until you can make a thread.
August 11th, 2019 at 7:26 AM ^
Said the Sam's thing below. Agree. Points can be easily made
August 11th, 2019 at 9:32 AM ^
Waiting 6 months or 1 year most likely won't change peoples inclination towards being a troll or making an ass of themselves.
Point total, however...that's the play. Yes, changing the point threshold required for posting a thread to 5000 might lock out some good information (I can think of two such posts recently - former AD employee and the post about future football coaching candidates that I found to be particularly great). But, there could be some sort of submission/ if thereview process point total isn't met and such individuals want to set a topic before the board.
August 11th, 2019 at 9:50 AM ^
The advantage of a wait period is that reduces lazy drive-by trolling. Drunk Yoda is not likely to wait a week to post a new thread, much less six months.
It's only part of a solution, though. It wouldn't prevent Drunk Yoda from polluting threads until the mods got around to banning him. It would not prevent the more dedicated, long-term trolls like Maizen, who would probably create a dozen accounts a day just to make sure he had one to use to post threads six months from now.
August 11th, 2019 at 11:43 AM ^
I agree. I think they should wait 6 months, at least, to start a thread. That should prevent easy trolling.
August 11th, 2019 at 6:36 AM ^
As a long term member and daily reader who rarely posts comments much less threads I do not support raising the point limit. I do support the idea of a waiting time for posting privileges.
August 11th, 2019 at 10:38 AM ^
I'm with you, SMFH58. Just as I am starting to count down the number needed to get to 100, this pops up. And it's not like I am dying to post some random thread, I would just like to be able to up-vote posts that crack me up!! Some of the stuff on this board is gold.
I also read the board every day. Love it!
August 11th, 2019 at 11:00 AM ^
I'm with you, too, SMFH58. I'm in the same boat you are. A 6 month waiting period along with the 100 points seems fair to me.
August 11th, 2019 at 11:59 PM ^
I concur as well. Certainly it's a worthwhile goal to rid the board of jerks and trolls, but I don't think this is the best first step.
August 11th, 2019 at 6:48 AM ^
I've been a member for a year and I have 17 points. Sure, I'm not a regular, but how in the heck do you get to 100 that quickly? And how long will it take me to get to 1,000?
August 11th, 2019 at 7:01 AM ^
He went to an old baseball post from a few weeks past and posted the same comment over 140 times to break the point threshold. Do it at 2:19 am and you bought yourself a Mgolife of a few hours before Seth or LSA2000 has their morning coffee. (Brian’s too caught up in in being a good dad to look at this crap this early).
August 11th, 2019 at 7:27 AM ^
Based on the time stamps, I wonder if "Yoda" scripted his way to 100+ points. In that case, no point-based threshold would prevent that type of nonsense.
August 11th, 2019 at 7:51 AM ^
It does take a long time, if you don't post often.
I have been a member for 9 years and pretty much regular reader (atleast couple of time day during off season and more in regular season) and struck less than 250 points
August 11th, 2019 at 6:49 AM ^
Make any positive change.
August 11th, 2019 at 7:06 AM ^
I only have 200 and wouldn’t even consider starting threads that I’ve seen this morning. Then again I’m 46 and have what I’d like to think is a little common sense. Here’s to kicking the dam ball off so we can talk football and not idiot!
August 11th, 2019 at 7:12 AM ^
I am fine with it.
