META: Time to raise the points limit to start a thread.

Submitted by Dawggoblue on August 11th, 2019 at 2:35 AM

Jedi Master Yoda was a member for 13 minutes, got 100 points and posted that trash.  Time to raise the cap to 1000?  2000?  5000?  100 just isnt enough anymore.  What say you?

I still think the number should be exactly one higher than the number I have. But he deserves the ban-stick for what he posted, regardless of points. I'm not a huge banning advocate, but if someone's going to start an item solely to troll like that, it's not like he cared about posting here.

1,000 sounds good.  But it should also be relatively easy to identify this type of point binging and negate it.  Or even just set a 30-60 day waiting period to start your own thread.

Take away the automatic point for making a post maybe? That way you have to post quality stuff to get to the level necessary to start a thread. Or a certain waiting period to start a thread

This is a good idea, Post quality content not random shit.  If you raise the point total it would just take people longer to be able to post this, maybe two drunk evenings instead of one.  I would also make it so the mods need to have an “activate” button before just allowing people to start threads so they can review posting history before giving rights.

Great idea!  Also, maybe a lock on older posts.  If it isn't a sticky thread, then after a period of inactivity on the post it will automatically lock.  That way accounts like Jedi can't go back 2-3 months and post the same comment 150 times.  They'd have to comment on more recent posts where they would be more likely caught and stopped before they became a problem.  For good measure, put a point limit on commenting on sticky threads too just to prevent them from using those as well.

Fatman, apparently you can’t edit older posts if you go back far enough. Out of curiosity I went back to the fist page of posts to see if I could add a comment.  And, there was the perfect post to comment on: “How many NCs will Rich Rod Win?”  Unfortunately I couldn’t comment.  I assume it has to do with the upgrade and not a set time limit.

A post doesn't get a point unless someone else upvotes it.  Then they get the point for the post and the upvote(s).  That way meaningless posts like "I agree" carry no value.

But I like the 30 or 60 day waiting period idea better.  Most trolls don't have that level of patience.

I feel bad for the poor mod who has to sift through 35 threads about an unannounced kickoff time for a game 10 weeks from now.

I dont think they want the extra work. And to be honest, if someone commits and the post isn't approved right away, I'd start to look elsewhere for news.

I think much higher point threshold and a waiting period is key.

In my opinion, too much pressure/responsibility is put on the mods for a good blog reader experience. They can't be online all the time.

There definitely should be a higher point limit and/or new user waiting period, esp during football and basketball season.

And once that is added, it would be nice to finally be able to "Ignore User" on our own (e.g., as Disqus, WaPo and other commenting systems allow), as sometimes (understandably) it takes quite a bit of time for the mods to ban obvious trolls, but there's no reason those posters should be polluting my view of the comments in the meantime. But that's likely a long way off, if ever.

Trash would be quite the understatement. One wonders what the hell goes through peoples mind(or lack thereof) sometimes. Geesh!

Waiting 6 months or 1 year most likely won't change peoples inclination towards being a troll or making an ass of themselves.

Point total, however...that's the play. Yes, changing the point threshold required for posting a thread to 5000 might lock out some good information (I can think of two such posts recently - former AD employee and the post about future football coaching candidates that I found to be particularly great). But, there could be some sort of submission/ if thereview process point total isn't met and such individuals want to set a topic before the board.

The advantage of a wait period is that reduces lazy drive-by trolling. Drunk Yoda is not likely to wait a week to post a new thread, much less six months.

It's only part of a solution, though. It wouldn't prevent Drunk Yoda from polluting threads until the mods got around to banning him. It would not prevent the more dedicated, long-term trolls like Maizen, who would probably create a dozen accounts a day just to make sure he had one to use to post threads six months from now.

As a long term member and daily reader who rarely posts comments much less threads I do not support raising the point limit. I do support the idea of a waiting time for posting privileges.

I'm with you, SMFH58.  Just as I am starting to count down the number needed to get to 100, this pops up.  And it's not like I am dying to post some random thread, I would just like to be able to up-vote posts that crack me up!!  Some of the stuff on this board is gold.

I also read the board every day.  Love it!

I've been a member for a year and I have 17 points. Sure, I'm not a regular, but how in the heck do you get to 100 that quickly? And how long will it take me to get to 1,000?

He went to an old baseball post from a few weeks past and posted the same comment over 140 times to break the point threshold. Do it at 2:19 am and you bought yourself a Mgolife of a few hours before Seth or LSA2000 has their morning coffee. (Brian’s too caught up in in being a good dad to look at this crap this early).

I only have 200 and wouldn’t even consider starting threads that I’ve seen this morning. Then again I’m 46 and have what I’d like to think is a little common sense. Here’s to kicking the dam ball off so we can talk football and not idiot!
