Meta: Site upgrade coming soon?

Submitted by Magnus on

I noticed this morning that the voting function is completely kaput, and MGoPoints have disappeared. I also noticed that Brian has not posted anything since Wednesday. To go along with the post a few weeks ago that the current version of Drupal would no longer be updated, are we to assume that a site upgrade is coming soon? When the functions stop working and Brian disappears for a few days, I have to think that something important is happening. (Or maybe Brian just has the flu.)

I'm not demanding a site upgrade. Free content is free content. I'm just wondering if there's some impending news.

Read the first couple of words, and if you see "choke", "no heart", "better coaching", "not a D1 player", or "fire X", you can probably skip right over, unless you like your hot taeks extra spicy with a healthy dose of pedantry.

Maybe he is waiting until our major sports are done for the year. Not that the OT posts about TV shows and what everyone had for dinner aren't amaaaaaazing, but that would be an ideal time to make a change.

A side benefit of 95 is we are two years out of a championship run with Jimmy King  as captain.

Hmm... there's something going on about some guy called Ed Martin... but that probably won't add up to much.

It could be worse.

I'm not sure how viable that is. Right now I think there are three full-time employees (Brian, Ace, Seth), along with Adam Schnepp and Alex Cook, who I'm assuming are part-timers. I don't know that this site could support four full-timers, at least not without cutting pay for others. Truthfully, I don't know anything about the finances of the site, so maybe I'm incorrect.

Wow- now a person can't be downvoted we can say what we really feel!

OSU is an incredible football program that finds a path win no matter what

U. Meyer turned in the greatest single season coaching effort in history by going through 3 QB's to get a NC- JH will have a tough time beating him

Dantonio develops low ranked players way better than UM does- in general. That guys knows his shit.

Too many UM fans are sore losers who disrespect the great programs that beat them- you can be a true UM fan and NOT hate OSU and MSU. Time for all the pussys to quit dissin'.

If your idea of fun is hating on a rival then you have. no. life. period.

MGoBlog crashes so often it seems like the creation of  a science fair project for a middle school

There- said it.

I'll add that The Victor's is a simplistic and uncreative fight song. It gets annoying hearing it over a dozen times in a game. Sparty's fight song is better and the fans there are much more energetic when it comes time to sing it.

Go upgrade your own shitty site. Maybe plaster some more boobs all over it and you and your boy Peyton can go around Danza slapping people's daughters!

Maybe, just maybe, sissy points can go away and people can then stop turning every thread into a discussion about them, and grown man, big boy posting can debut right here on this piece of shit blog

This is hard to talk about because how much time and fun we spend on a FREE site.

But with that said, this has to be bad business. So many crashes in the last month.

We all wish you best luck in getting fixes in fast and properly. We appreciate everything this site gives us... But the TRUTH is I have been going to other UM sires more often because of the issues here. Those sites actually have been pretty solid.

Brian is actually upset over his fellow Michiganders voting for Bernie Sanders and his brand of European-style socialism in the primary. If you all want European-style socialism, that can easily be obtained with one click of the mouse, and just like that, BAM! we're all equals. How's it feel?

I'm sure if you study the writings of George Orwell, you'll find a story about monkeys and koalas that perfectly describes our present condition.

One thing is certain, and that the traffic seems to have definitely dropped in the post-voting - and now post-points world. The pages will sometimes spread themselves all the way across my screen and omit the side panes as well, but they've been misaligning themselves very quickly over the last few days in particular, which is what leads me to believe that there are people very, very turned off by this (I am a bit myself). I hope it means better things are on the horizon, because modding was hard before - it's almost impossible now sometimes.

Interestingly, I recently broached the topic of potentially adding a voting function to my site. The idea was met with some resistance, and I have yet to make a final decision on whether to go ahead with it or not. But your comments kind of confirm my theory that voting helps to drive traffic.

1. It's simply not as much fun without voting.  I dont care what anybody says, people check their posts to see if there is general agreement via upvotes or disagreement via downvotes.  Without voting it's just like yelling in your backyard.

2. Without voting anarchy rules.  I know you remember the glory days the last time voting was removed and how much modding a mod had to mod.  Without the ability of the masses to police things the lunatic fringe runs amok.

3. Posting goes down without voting.  Check the amount of content posted on the sideboard pre and post voting removal.  There was a day last week when there was a single thread posted one night and that was it.  Without fresh content to discuss there's not much reason to visit repeatidly.

4. The site is definitely wonky right now.  Have the time I check/post I get the Drupal "Site is temporarily offline" OR I get the wierd sidebar where everybody is "Anonomous Coward" so I have no idea who is posting what unless I recognize their signature.

I don't envy you.  Can't be much fun being a mod right now.

I am essentially a user with a couple extra features on their screen in most respects. I have occasional communication with the top, if you will, primarily on Twitter. Beyond that, I have as much of a clue as anyone when things like, say, the disappearance of points happen - that is to say, not much.
