Meta: Request for Recruiting Info

Submitted by StephenRKass on November 21st, 2019 at 9:43 PM

There are a number of features on the board which I appreciate. UFR is definitely one of them. So is the Monday postgame analysis, and the Friday pregame predictions. I appreciate what Ace writes on basketball. But there is one feature that seems to be sorely lacking:  recruiting information.

One area of interest is how current commits and targets are doing in playoffs. Because I am in the Chicago area, I know about AJ Henning's team, and their performance. But I really don't know much about the other recruits.

Another area of interest is in visits, official and otherwise. Magnus usually posts a list of visitors at Touch the Banner, but there seems to be very little info or coverage on mgoblog about visits.

A last area would be how recruiting is going with areas of need and non-commitments, especially for 2020 and 2021. We know that Andrew Gentry, Theo Johnson, and Darrion Green-Warren are still out there. I'd love to know more, to know anything. And a specific area of interest is in 2021 and 2022 kids from the State of Michigan. There have been some who have crowed about MSU missing out on the top 15 recruits in the state. That's all well and good, but is Michigan improving? I hate to see kids heading out of state, especially to OSU or PSU.

I know that there is occasional recruiting cover, but I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more. The reality is that recruiting is the lifeblood of any team. If we ever expect to beat OSU, we're going to have to see Michigan do a better job of recruiting.

Yes.  Swim lanes made recruiting easy to follow and understand as it was unfolding.  And the info he provided was fantastic.

The poster who used to provide that info left and if memory serves-not under great terms.  Do you remember why?

I totally forgot about that guy. That guy uses to post nonstop. One time I even checked his post history, and he'd have 7 hours or whatever of not posting while sleeping but then otherwise posted practically every 30 minutes for like a week straight, often very long posts. It was insane. Crazy that he went from that to just gone. I even remember a post someone made asking if he was OK because he basically disappeared.

I agree that it would be a positive addition, but I think people need to remember that there's only so much time between the 2.5 guys who regularly write for the site. Ace is still getting back in the swing of things, I'm sure Brian's UFR's are extremely time-intensive, same with Seth's Fee Fi Foe Films, there are various podcast/radio commitments, Ace has basketball stuff now, etc.

I think they realize that 24/7 already does quite a good job of covering the more in-depth aspects of recruiting and it's not worth the effort to have more coverage for stuff that Recruiting Roundups and Future Blue Originals don't hit on.

It's this. If one thing hits me during the week I'm barely sleeping to get my stuff out. Brian's barely getting UFRs done in time to write the previews. Ace contributes as he can but when he needs to rest he has to rest.

And recruiting has been pretty flat anyways. We got Matt from Endless Motor to do hoops recruiting because there are things going on with that front. Football recruiting has been largely stagnant so there isn't a pressing need at this moment to cover it. Once in awhile we get a future blue originals from Adam but he's a guy with a job who helps out when he can.

Plus these days there are two sites and one of them doesn't get very much intel--or gets bad intel. There's no point to a recruiting roundup if it's just "here's what Sam and Steve say."

Ok, I get that. You can only do so much. I'm sure that the pieces you and Brian write are extremely time consuming. It doesn't mean that I wouldn't like to hear how Michigan commitment's seasons have gone, or how our recruits are doing in the postseason, or an occasional update on the status with our key remaining recruits and our key targets for 2021 and beyond. I don't know if this has to come from mods, or board readers, or links. But yeah, I seem to recall a number of years where there were reports on high school olayoffs and how our recruits were doing.

there are websites that you have to pay for that do this. rarely does a free blog have the resources to cover the ins and outs of recruiting, which is an extremely complex process. i think mgoblog does a fine job keeping me in the know, and if i wanted to know more, i'd pay for it at one of those sites.

DGW: Down to Michigan and Penn State. Definitely some red flags in his background, but he's a take. Probably will wait to see if Urban takes the USC job before deciding. Dad likes Michigan a lot, I'd lean Michigan.

Theo: Basically down to Michigan and Penn State again, but a lot more radio silence from Theo's camp imo. I'd lean Penn State, but I wouldn't be surprised if he went Michigan.

Andrew Gentry: Probably would've committed to BYU already if that's what he wants. From what I heard that's a direction the parents want him to go, but I'm not sure if he's as sure. Too far out to guess if it's Michigan, but definitely in a really good spot there.

Jordan Addison: New offer at WR, he's committed to Pitt, but Michigan really likes him and I'd expect him to visit soon. He may flip, but there's mutual interest.

There are two current commits that won't be a part of this class. I've mentioned both before, but not sure when they'll decommit publicly, but the staff has notified both of them their scholarship offers will not be available. Both were contingent on several things, and both came up short. I'd plan on 24-26 recruits in this class, without counting Gaige Garcia.

Here's to hoping the rumors of Franklin to FSU put a little doubt in Theo Johnson's mind and nudge him over to the good guys. Not saying there's any smoke there for Frames to move to the Seminoles as I have no idea, but even a mildly substantiated rumor can be helpful when our coach has declared he's not going anywhere.

Thanks. Regarding Myles Hinton, we know he loves to visit because his brother is here at Michigan. When he comes to Ann Arbor, does he pretty much just watch the game, hang out on the sideline and with his brother, and then head home? Do the coaches have interaction with him, especially coach Warinner? Is Hinton 100% to Stanford, or would he consider Michigan? Obviously he would be a take.

I was at Zola Bistro the morning of the ND game, and all of the Hintons (minus Chris Jr.) were at the table next to us.  FWIW Myles was decked out in Stanford gear from head to toe.  My guess based off of what we've all read, and not his apparel that day, is that he's pretty solid to Stanford.

OTOH, Hinton (Sr.) had an amazing #15 M jersey with the name plate of "Papa Hinton"

I see all the new MGoBloggers talking about how “free sites don’t provide recruiting coverage”.

Look, this isn’t a “free site” anymore. Based on the 3-5 ads that I’ve been suddenly been getting (per MGoBlog page), Brian better either be sending us a dividend check this year, or hire someone for recruiting.

Improve the content or stop exploiting us so much, Brian. You can’t have your cake and eat it on this.
