META: Commenting on UV / Juwan Howard Content?

Submitted by Denard In Space on December 14th, 2023 at 6:26 PM

Just wondering why the Unverified Veracity is locked for comments? I think there is a fair discussion to be had about what is absolutely fair game to criticize with Juwan (His behavior, certain aspects of roster management) and not fair (in my view: criticizing him for the team's defensive performance this year when he is not even the head coach and just returned from heart surgery, the latter being completely out of his control; admissions nonsense fits in this category too IMO).

Would love to hear people's thoughts on the later but hoping I have not crossed some sort of rubicon here.

Not related to Juwan...my question is...if JJ goes to NFL and Dante Moore goes to Oregon..who will be our QB since it seems most of the top ones will have made decisions soon

Does anyone know if Juwan had unusual trouble controlling his temper when he was a player at UM or in the NBA?  If his problems started mainly in the last few years, I wonder if they could be due to neurologic problems---which often occur in patients with the condition he had surgery for (aortic aneurism).  I wonder if he had any other neurologic symptoms prior to his surgery.

Thanks for the information.  I did not suggest that  medical conjecture would be the way to go in deciding Juwan's future.  But it could at least carry some moral weight---so that the press is less inclined to portray him as just a bad person..  Also, as I said, his doctor might have information that would be more than conjecture.  Juwan could have had other neuroloogic symptoms---as well as CT or MRI findings--- coincident with the observed behavioral changes.  At the same time, I would do not suggest that should determine how Juwan's actions are treated by an administrator.  The welfare of the progam, not just Juwan, is at stake.

Not sure there's a lot of real discussion to be had on the Juwan/Sanderson as no one on this board really knows the details and the HR complaint needs to be processed.

Let Juwan finish out the year. I'm in the this shit is crazy camp. People want Juwan out because of how our team has played all this other stuff is trash.

I say give Juwan until the end of the year to see if he can turn it around. Why? Well I remember this board wanted Belien fired for a year straight before he turned it around and of course this board wanted Harbaugh fired before he turned it around.

I, in both instances, wanted to keep both coaches as I do here. I'm not turning my back on Juwan, sorry.

I want Juwan out because Sanderson is far, far, far more valuable than him. Besides he hasn't been the coach at all this year so the transition would be incredibly easy...since it has already happened. If Juwan didn't have all his non-basketball issues I'd be happy with giving him a couple more years to figure things out but when you combine all his basketball issues with his worse non-basketball issues it would make no sense to keep him and drive Sanderson out just to fire Juwan at the end of the season or after another year or two.

I just don’t get the overwhelming support for Sanderson. I understand he has helped players with conditioning, but what else does he contribute? It’s weird too me that people value a strength and conditioning coach over a head coach, after listening to Sam Webb this morning, I agree with him. If Sanderson was insubordinate in front of the team, he should be fired. It’s Juwan’s program and he cannot have S&C coaches undermining him.

Not at all, at least in my case.  Strictly from a basketball perspective, I wouldn't write him off because the team is 5-5.  I think there is still a chance for the team to turn it around.

It's his conduct that has me much more circumspect.  It seems increasingly apparent that he has an anger management problem, and I'm becoming pessimistic that he can bring it under control while in this job.

I'm ready for the Jay Wright era.

In all seriousness, I doubt Wright ever comes back to college.

I doubt Tony Bennett ever leaves UVA until he's fired or retires. We had our shot at Shaka already (he was #1 for me over Howard, who admittedly was #2...even over Luke Yaklich).

Bring Beilein back for a year while you find your guy.

With the portal, no one gives a crap about recruiting the top kids out of high school...so who cares if that takes a hit for a year. Get the program back in order and give yourself time to find the right person for the job.

If you post directly from livewriter to the front page the comments are off unless you go in and turn them on. I think Brian just forgot to turn them on. Originally there was going to be a sponsorship on this UV, but the contest we were going to promote ran out of prizes before it got posted. Probably just forgot to do that in the chaos

Our defensive issues are mostly related to having very few guards and perimeter oriented wings on the roster. We have 4 in total and one is hurt and one is stapled to the bench.

Wait.. hear me out.  Maybe the culture is bad because Juwan has not been able to coach this year.  JH thought Sanderson was taking a shot at the other coaches and Juwan was defending his staff.

That is a likely scenario as well.  It bothers me that the assumption Sanderson did nothing wrong here.  If you walked into your bosses office and told him/her that the culture is fu…, most of us would be unemployed.  Especially if you said it to your bosses kid.

As they talked about on the podcast yesterday, the bigger problem by far for the long-term program is that U of M admissions is a complete cockblock on transfers, and with the way recruiting is at least 50% now done in the portal, this is a bottom of the B1G program going forward unless it changes. They lost two players because of this, and if both were at Michigan this is a potential final four team.
