Met Jimmy King & David Merritt Tonight

Submitted by Qmatic on

Despite the disappointing loss (FOUL WHEN UP 3!!!) I had a great time tonight at Applebee's in Warren where I got to meet David Merritt and Jimmy King. It was a great atmosphere during the game there. I was able to pull the U-M grad student card and automatically got a free t-shirt along with the complimentary autograph poster and pictures. We were able to compete in trivia against not only fellow attendees, but Jimmy, David, and members of U-M markting as well. I was lucky enough to win all of the trivia rounds, and I made out with some pretty awesome apparel, and an autographed basketball from Coach Beilein.

Great time getting to talk to both Mr. King and Mr. Merritt. Unfortunate that we fell again in OT, but at least I got a nice parting gift(s) for my time. They said this was the 4th Applebee's they've been too this year; anyone else on the board been able to make it out to one of the events?

The kids were making no progress, so my neighbors asked me to bust open the pinata.  One problem: this was a girl's 4th birthday party and the pinata was a Rapunzel lookalike.  So in front of a mixed group of adults and little kids, I beat the hell out of a princess.  I thought it was a bit disturbing, but the kids were too happy to get at the candy and prizes to care.  I definitely prefer the pinatas that open with strings.

It's times like these where I wish I had a female to console me.

You wish.

The way it works is that you feel bad enough about the loss, but then she piles on and rants at you for wasting 3 hours watching basketball until midnight and then waking her up when you finally come to bed and then she can't get back to sleep and she has an important meeting in the morning so you get the cold shoulder all the next day.

Something like that.

I also enjoyed myself at Applebee's. This was a chance to get my sneakers signed by Mr. King and maybe get a few questions in about my favorite squad of all-time.  A few quick things for the 0.01% of people who care about sneakers and Nike.

  • Jimmy said "yes" and smiled after asking him if Michigan will be going back to Nike.  I asked how sure he was and he smiled again and said "Yes, they have to."  We then both shook our heads about how terrible Adidas and their gear is.
  • He went through 10 pairs of Nike Huarache's his freshman year because they were actually cross training shoes and the back sole kept splitting open on him.
  • The team picked the Huaraches to wear because they were different and nobody else wanted to wear them.
  • They asked Nike to make a black/blue model which they did because of the team asking for them (these were recently re-released a few weeks ago by Nike).
  • The black Air Force Max (1993 tournament) is his favorite sneaker of all-time and told me how comfortable and durable they were.
  • When he first started practicing at Michigan he wore low top Air-Force 1's.
  • He said Chris would "definitely" sign my shoes (1 down and 4 to go).
  • Jimmy's mom has 1 of his jerseys (he thinks) but he gave all his shoes/gear away to his friends back in the day.
  • Asked me about Harbaugh and what I thought (who cares what I think?) and he's very excited about the football team.

Jimmy King is obviously not on a Charles Woodson or Tom Brady level of Blue fame, but he was by far the nicest athlete I've ever met.  He actually said he'd be honored to sign my shoes and really seemed to enjoy talking Nike with me for a few minutes, a nice break from the Webber questions perhaps.  Michigan should be proud he is representing their University.

Now that is a cool story bro I can get behind.  Always loved both of these shoes for the same reasons (Fab Five) and can't believe you are building signed copies.  Are they reissues?  Mint condition from the early 90's?
