Men’s Basketball - hosting Purdue tonight, 9:00 pm tip-off

Submitted by Amazinblu on January 26th, 2023 at 11:10 AM

The men’s hoops team hosts top ranked Purdue at Crisler tonight.  The game will be broadcast on FS1 and tip off at 9:00 pm EST.  The current line is Purdue by five (5).

This will be a challenge.  Can Hunter slow down Edey?  What does Michigan need to do to have a chance?

IMO, for the Maize & Blue to have a chance, they need to play their best game of the season - solid guard play, better ball protection / reduced turnovers, good free throw and perimeter shooting, etc.   Basically, everything.

Will you be watching?  What are your thoughts?

As a kid I liked Monday night football, until the end of the 1st quarter then it was bedtime. I remember one specific MNF game- 49ers and Lions at the Silverdome.  I watched as much as I could and had to go to bed after 11:00 because I had school.  Woke up to see Lions won on the cover of the Oakland press.  Anyways enough of that.  Having a Big Ten regular season game start after 9:00 is ridiculous. Its bad enough when its a tournament game.

I know he’s not overly popular on the blog, but Bob Knight went off on the Big Ten administrators when they first decided to cave to TV and allow games to start after 8 local time on school nights. His argument was more on the “students need to attend early classes the following morning” side of things but from a fan perspective it sucks too.

Yep, the basically everything is trivial, it means Michigan will need it's most complete game of the season. At the same time, Purdue will need one of it's worst games of the season.

Hopefully, Jace will be off concussion protocol. Jett might be able to try, much like Blake Corum did against Ohio State and find out, he can't be anywhere near 100% on that sprained ankle.

I dunno man Purdue -5 seems very low to me.  This Tuesday OSU play at Illinois and the line was Illini -3 which I hit fairly hard because the Buckeye's having been playing terrible basketball lately and the line seemed wrong.  OSU kept it close for the first half but Illinois pulled away late and won by nine.

I kinda envision a similar game tonight.  Michigan will keep it fairly close in the first half but Purdue will pull away late and win by 10 or so.  I have never and will never bet against Michigan so no money to be made by me this evening regardless of the score.

Have only lost one game all season by more than 7 (if you’re considering that 5.5 point spread!). Have played some very good teams tight, but unable to finish. This is a desperation spot tonight if there is any hope to make a tournament bid. Not many teams can match Purdues size with Edey, but Hunter comes close. I think this is a really talented, but really lazy Michigan team - especially on defense. That being said I actually think Michigan takes down #1 tonight.

Take Purdue giving the points. It's a win and if wrong and we hang with them or god forbid we upset them, it's money well worth losing.

Purdue returned to No. 1 in this week's AP Top 25 rankings for the second time this season. Purdue is the sixth Big Ten team to voted No. 1 twice in the same season (Indiana - 2013, 1993; Michigan - 1977, 1965; Ohio State - 2011). Purdue is 6-2 all-time as the nation's No. 1-ranked team with both losses coming on buzzer-beaters by Rutgers.

This would be a good game to do opponent "look alikes"

9PM is late fir this, especially when it becomes 9:12.  So to avoid commercials and halftime blabber I have to wait until 10 to start.  This could be an early Friday morning watch

Seems odd that the line is just 5. Is Purdue not actually great? I'll be at the game and want to root for Michigan, so I won't bet on it, but if I was a neutral this seems like one to bet heavily on Purdue -5.

i dont think anyone really knows. I think all of college bball right now is mediocre, not in a negative way, but there are just no elite teams. Everyone getting knocked off, and not just by top 10 teams...

Purdue seems legit, but we say this more than we don't and yet they flounder when it counts.

Plus the B10 ... wooooooooof. really bad this year. probably has a few ok teams.. hard to judge purdue based on that.

Why are the Wolverines currently NOT projected to make the NCAA Tournament this year?

This might be why:

Michigan is ranked 76th and 12th among Big Ten teams in the NCAA’s NET Rankings. They’re the only Big Ten Team WITHOUT a “Quad 1” win.*

Seven Big Ten teams now are ranked in the Top 40 (Purdue-4, Rutgers-19, Indiana-23, Ohio State-27, Illinois-28, Maryland-38, Iowa-40). Michigan State is 41; Northwestern’s 44. Counting tonight, Michigan has six games left against those teams (two with Indiana, none with Maryland or Iowa), including three of the last six games of the regular season, each of which is on the road. LINK to Michigan's schedule.

*    There are four quadrants in NCAA Net Ranking, broken down like this:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75.
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135.
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240.
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353.
