Mel Pearson named Michigan Hockey coach
http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/042417aaa.html
I'm just teasing, WD. I know you have news in this thread regarding the official announcement and presser. But when I saw the thread title I though, "Good God, didn't we go over this yesterday?!"
I guess the technical issues on the site have me a little on edge and I'm not my usual cheery self.
He wasn't named until today.
Plus, if this were the football coach there would be another thread for the presser. Then a post-presser reaction thread. And then a half dozen more enthusiastic-hope-for-the-future threads.

Switches in clothing lines, etc...
I've seen a lot of posts saying that they'd prefer the younger up and coming names.
He's only 58. Do yourself a favor and look through some of the more successful ACTIVE coaches in the NHL. They are right around that same age. Michigan will get a solid 10-15 years from Mel.
It's impossible to judge how coaches will do in certain situations. Some of those young names may have came to Michigan and completely flamed out.
This is a big win for Michigan. Mel has done great at Tech, and it's shown that he was a huge part of Michigan's success with the drop off after he left. If he brings in the young guy brought up in Brian's post that Red likes, then he also may be grooming a succesor. 10 to 12 years is a long time. that is 3 full cycles of recruits. There will be other up and comers when the time comes, and maybe he will be on the new coaching staff.
Great hire. We're going to kick ass again in hockey.
Glad to see that Warde got his man. Go Blue!
We've got a number of frozen fours in the region coming up (Detroit, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh). I hope we can make a few of em

A return to the Frozen Four would be great, but we really need to win the whole thing so I can stop having flashbacks about that 2011 goal that was waved off. I'm optimistic that Pearson can get it done.

That game was so sad for me that I never watched the highlights again. I didn't even remember the goal/not goal happened until people mentioned it in the 'what thing would you change' post on the front page a few weeks ago

I was there and I will never forget it. The joy of celebrating that goal that meant we probably won a championship was briefly so great -- then soul was crushed. The drive home to Ann Arbor from St. Paul sucked.

Or he'll think he's only 58.

He's not too old. Get over it. The team will win now, but more than that, it will be set up to compete for titles in another 2- 3 years. If Mel does what I expect, he has a solid 15 years, which is plenty.

But, hey, as long as you're on our side...just impose your will and Win Baby Win!

this is huge news

Hockey recruiting site anyone? Are there any sites out there that rank recruiting classes for college hockey?
I know players can just be looked up by whatever NHL scouting service but I would rather have it repackaged for college hockey

I know Rivals tried it 5-7 years ago but it's really hard because of the literal "North American Top 100 Hockey Prospects" you get a whole bunch who forgo college hockey and a whole bunch who have an unclear graduating year
A guy named Chris Heisenberg keeps a google docs sheet out there for who is committed where and from that, you just have to try to piece together approximately where the guys are expected to be drafted to give you a sense for how good they are
In short, no there's not

Sounds like a good niche market for someone to get into for a new website. There would be literally hundreds of people who would visit it a few times.

Get what you are saying but I think now more than ever there is talent in college hockey that will play in the NHL. Poor coverage is what keeps it from gaining more interest. Someone with skin in the game needs to put in just a little bit of effort.

It would be kind of a mess to do the top 100 entering prospects because probably the majority of them would be playing somewhere others than the NCAAs (CHL, Europe, USHL, etc.)

Just do the top 100 entering college. Thats it.
I guess the difficulty is the size of the pool of players for all the leagues. I just think there has to be enough there to do a ranking of incoming freshman and classes especially for programs like Michigan.
Quick google search shows some sites that did it back in 2015 and earlier but holy clutter and shitty site navigation.

Cause if not, may I propose "The Cooler"

There was others of interest like Denver's coach, but this was both most realistic and ideal to me. Yeah, wish it was a few years ago, but now with success at Tech it's more certain he's not a buffoon like Hoke and can turn a program around.
Plus any time there's a long-time assistant (ideally alum) or former player of our program who's in the top 5 of possible hires, i hope that's the one we get
Where we can look back in 20 years and talk about the Mel years.
GO BLUE!!
This is a good thing, right?
