If he had no interest, he didn't have to list us. Maybe there's a chance.

So, he was a lifelong Michigan fan and the coaches are about to whiff on him due to one bad season?

What a fiasco.

You can't put the recruiting hopes and dreams of Michigan on the back of one guy deciding whether he'd like to go to school there or not. People have different preferences and it's not a lock that the best school in the state automatically gets the best players from that state (and it's not very debatable which program is the best in the state right now anyway).

People are individuals. We've poached Derrick Green from VA, Peppers from NJ, Donovan Warren from CA, Stephen Schilling from WA, and on and on. McDowell just might not like Michigan that much

So you are saying that there is a school out there that has not lost a "lifetime fan" recruit to another school before?  Please list that school.

Hint: it happens all the time.

You realize that for a 17 year old, "life long Michigan fan" likely means like four or five years, right? When I was a kid I was a life long Michigan fan who also really liked Kentucky and Arizona and Miami and like half a dozen other schools. I was a life long Pistons fan who had a Dallas Mavericks jersey (Jamal Mashburn) and a Charlotte Hornets starter jacket. I was. Life long Lions fan but my only football jersey was a Ricky Waters Eagles jersey. The fandom of a kid isn't always crazy loyal.

If you put a team first in your Twitter favorites list, you inevitably commit to them. I'm just using history, science, and geology to back up my facts, so you don't even have to bother checking.

He has been to Ann Arbor 12 times from what I saw from one of the recuiting services. Maybe he is giving the other schools a chance to win him over, just to make sure. Plus maybe his official to msu was more to watch the game.

I think Marshall had visited MSU like 5-7 times but never committed. Finds something he likes better (Michigan) and commits. MSU. Friendzoned.

It's the same with McDowell. Visited Michigan a ton of times and had a thousand chances to commit but didn't. It's likely because Michigan is missing something and he's looking for something better.

I think kid is doing the right thing. Of course I hope he commits to Michigan.

As a matter of fact we NEED him. Our defense NEEDS more talent.

The farther away from 2013 we get the better our chances.  It's science.

Just tell him we wouldn't let Hand do engineering, but if he wants in to the EECS program, BROKE (Brandon+Hoke) will give him special permission...

We've played this game before, so many times before. Guy has Michigan as his childhood favorite and/or proclaimed leader early on, maintains that position through process, slowly starts to drift and visit other schools, and then inevitably signs somewhere else.

People will neg me but you know you watch this exact scenario play out several times each and every recruiting cycle. McDowell isn't going to play for Michigan.

Agreed. I'm not going to name any of the previous examples, but he just seems like a new lead in the same role. I'd love to be wrong, but it hasn't even seemed like a possibility in weeks. I'll hope for a pleasant surprise, but I'm not expecting much.

I would go so far as to say this scenario is like a guy caught in the friendzone. He doesn't want to believe he doesn't really have a chance anymore. "Dude shut up. She totally said I'm one of her bestest friends. I even went with her to get her nails done last week!...So what if she's hanging out with that guy from the football team?! That doesn't mean anything! I'm not in the friendzone!!!"

I was talking about guys who we were sure were coming to UM, who had some connection, or visited 100 times, or were a lock, but then ended up elsewhere. Zettel, Treadwell, Diamond, etc. Even when signs pointed to no, we held out hope, only to have those hopes dashed.

I read an article on his family, so don't know personally.  But I can tell you Zettel attended a ton of Michigan games.  I know because I walked by him in the blue lot on my way to the stadium, always looked like he was having fun.  Was absolutely shocked that he went to PSU.  He must have really, really hated the 3-3-5 (as well as his HS coach).

Well we don't really know anything about him other than he's visited MSU and Ohio recently so maybe we are in the lead for all we can tell. I would think we would have offered another DL if we didn't have a chance with us only taking 3 last year.

dude lists 4 teams doesn't mean chit. It's probably down to 2 right now, but everyone would puke in their cocoa puffs if he actually said that, so he just leaves in the other 2 that might make sense. Ain't no way a kid who grew up a fan wouldn't have taken an official here by now. Good luck to him but he won't play for Michigan.

I would love to end all this speculation and accept the kids that sign their letters of intent to Michigan. I hope that McDowel joins that group.
