McCarthy Mega Camp - Get ready to Like JJ even more

Submitted by Bo Schemheckler on May 24th, 2022 at 9:20 AM

Looks like JJ McCarthy put on a "Mega Camp" in his hometown of Chicago for 600+ kids to attend and brought along a fair number of his teammates so they could have the experience and benefit off of the NIL money from it. See the 247 article on it with plenty of quotes from teammates appreciating JJ for the opportunity and leadership

I wouldn't need to know this anytime soon, but I wonder how much NIL $ he's getting? Other guys on the team? Other sports (Dickinson, etc.)? Non-revenue sports?

I posted it because it’s a searchable database and the closest we’ll get to useful information on the topic. I figured it could answer some general questions about NIL or provide some context for where M players stand. If you go to The Wolverine homepage you can see the M players summary: https://www.on3.com/teams/michigan-wolverines/. How reliable these numbers are is anyones guess, but it’s a starting point.

Some observations from that list:

1.  3 of the top 4 players are not in college yet.  Bronny James is number 1 and he isn't even a five star prospect.

2.  You have to go all the way down to number 37 to get to the first Michigan player.  Who is it?  Adrian freaking Nunez.  The next closest is number 87, Blake Corum.

3.  OSU, Bama, Georgia, Oregon, USC, and Miami (YTM) are well represented on this list.  It's unfortunate that Michigan feels a little left out, in my opinion.  100 names feels like a short list though.  Maybe if it were expanded out to 200 or 300 there would be a lot more Michigan representation.

Edit - I looked at the CFB list and Blake jumps up to 70 with DJ Turner slotting in at 92.  Still, those are the only 2 names on that list from M.  When focusing purely on college basketball... Adrian jumps all the way up to 3rd!  Hunter is number 47 with 62k.  Moussa is number 99 at 29k.

NOTE:  According to On3, their rankings and values do NOT indicate how much money a player has made.  They are an estimate of a players financial worth at the current moment in time.  I did not dig further to figure out the length of that time frame.

He's not even on the list?

Also what is this bullshit in the first place? On3's evaluation? Where do these numbers come from because they look like On3 picked a number out of their ass and put it next to a guy's name for clicks.

Do these numbers actually come from knowledge of a players NIL deals or are they just a sites "evaluations" (aka bullshit)?

Amazing vibes:  teammates, friendship, leadership, community, kids, charity, NIL, Charles Woodson - nothing not to like. Thanks for sharing!

I'm hopeful, over time, that this approach to NIL--the big names helping ensure it gets spread amongst teammates--will be a competitive advantage. As money comes out in the open, guys will play harder for teammates who support them too.

Good article overall, especially the money quote from JJ at the end of the piece:

“So, a lot of the NIL... let's just say like the top 5% of the team is mostly getting a lot of benefits from it,” McCarthy explained. “And something like (the Mega Camp), the guys that don't (normally) get that benefit, they need to be getting it. It's just an opportunity for all of us to be together doing it and get the same amount of profit. It's just awesome doing this as a like team building, just chemistry and all that and just being out with the guys. There's nothing better. And NIL kind of allows us to do stuff like this. And at the end of the day, it's bringing us closer, so it's just a blessing for sure.”

Stuff like this from JJ impresses the hell outta me. Add to this all the other things he has done to build up his team and teammates since his verbal commitment and we get plenty of proof of his leadership abilities.

Both JJ and Cade (and not just them, Blake Corum being one of the best examples I've seen of high-quality Michigan Men) just ooze the kind of leadership that will bring out the best in everyone around them while they're representing the Maize and Blue.  Leaders and Best, and indicative of the high quality young men our staff looks for on the recruiting trail.

And on the field, no doubt this offense will be in good hands no matter which QB wins the starting job.

JJ does have the "it" factor. Both of Michigan's QBs will be winners on and off the field. Gladly would exchange a couple "W"s to have more people like this representing our school while in A2 and beyond.

Dwayne Haskins seemed like a good guy but that fatal accident story just got real ugly.

You forgot Stalin, Mao, Maduro, Pol Pot, and pretty much any other person who tried authoritarianism, socialism or communism as a form of gov't / economy since all they have proven to be effective at is getting the common man killed en masse.

Also, Jeffrey Dahmer was a prick.

It is truely incredible that people neg you for pointing out that the totalitarian dictators of marxist states have been responsible for killing more people than the killers originally listed. Apparently if you are a true believer you can not acknowledge the evil perpetrated by others on the left.

PS  Even if we agree not to count the mior league leftist murderers you left out the Kim family, Chavez and Maduro.

FWIW, I didn't neg the good drjaws.

But what I find truly incredible is that you feel the need to make this a left/right issue. It seems like every time someone mentions Hitler, there is now always the common refrain 'well what about Stalin'? Well what about him? He was a fucking killer. The left-wing totalitarians killed a lot of people, but you do realize that they were in power for a lot longer than the Nazis, right? And while the left killed a lot of people, they didn't do it because they viewed those people as inferior. Hitler, on the other hand, attempted to wipe out an entire race of people and he damn near succeeded. 2/3 of the pre-war population of Jews in Europe were killed. Ante Pavelić and the NDH/Ustaše wanted to exterminate all Serbs. There's a certain degree of evil in the racist ideas of the Nazis. I think that's well understood by most people except those constantly viewing things through ideological goggles. That's why I mentioned them. I don't see why you feel the need to diminish that or say 'well, what about those damn commies' whenever Hitler is mentioned.

I wasn't intending to make a political comment. But if you want to go on listing left-wing dictators that were killers just to prove how awful the left is, I can easily go round for round with you with dictators on the right. Say when.

It's an accident if it's not intentional, and there is nothing whatsoever to suggest it was intentional.

Plenty of accidents are attributable at least in part to alcohol impairment.  While having a high BAC may have been bad judgment, plenty of people -- including, I'm guessing, many here -- have occasionally had similarly high BAC's and made bad decisions as a result.  As such, I would suggest your "It's unfortunate but" phrasing is out of line.  Haskins was a sports hero to our friends from Columbus, and a damn good athlete who had his whole life ahead of him.  It's a tragedy, period, that he died.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was intoxicated when a dump truck hit and killed him on a Florida interstate earlier this year, according to a toxicology report released Monday by the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office.

The medical examiner's office determined Haskins had a blood-alcohol content of at least 0.20% at the time of his autopsy, more than double the legal limit in Florida of .08%.

Haskins' toxicology report also notes that ketamine was detected in his urine at the time of death, though no drugs were detected in his blood.

Ketamine can be used as a sedative or treatment for depression, but it is also known as a "club drug" that can produce "dissociative sensations and hallucinations," according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Idk we can try to insulate our insecurities but at the end of the day I would venture that most of us (99% of us) have gotten dangerously drunk more than once and didn't die that night.  We're all humans, even those of us who make bad decisions sometimes.

Michigan is very lucky to have a man like this on its roster. McNamara included. He just seems incredibly mature for his age, and its not something you see all the time.

Showed some promise this past season, but if he can keep progressing on the field, along with displaying this level of attitude and maturity, he could hear the league calling his name in the next few years.

That was my first thought too.

For instance, let's say my Michigan friends and me who live in Tampa, FL want to have some athletes down here to talk to local kids about how great UofM is, how great A2 is, the world-class education, etc., is there anything holding us back from doing that? I feel like there are alumni who would absolutely support stuff like that, even if it wasn't hugely lucrative for the athletes. Especially hosting such events in the hometown's/home states of these same athletes.
