MBB Recruiting: 2019 G Joe Girard III offered

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

This should be interesting. Beilein extended an offer to 2019 guard Joe Girard III (6'1", 165 lbs). Girard's dad played for Beilein at La Moyne. Girard goes to the same high school as Jimmer Fridette and has already broken his scoring records. He's on pace to break the NY state scoring record as a junior in H.S. (currently held by Lance Stephenson). Basically a kid you have to start guarding at half court. Shot 45% from 3 in the EYBL.

Not the most athletic guard in the world, but has picture perfect form on his jumper and okay lift. Don't know if he has the handles to play PG in the B1G, but I'm not even sure Beilein would want him on the ball given his shooting ability. Basically, he'd be out there to be a floor spacer.

His offer list (15 schools atm) doesn’t match the numbers he puts up but I’ll take a pure scorer any day.

This is the type of kid that no ones ever heard of until the NCAA tourney when he leads his team to major upsets and hits like ten threes a game.

Live right near this kid in the same town. Best player upstate has seen in decades. Great IQ and passing ability too.

Size and athleticism is the problem. Works hard tho and is QB that won the state title as a soph.

Leaning toward ND at this point afaik

in EYBL this Summer, and he's certainly a great shooter off the catch. However, much like Eli Brooks, I just struggle to believe that a non-shot creator can be a big contributor at the B10 level as a 5'11-6'0 catch and shoot player.

Seems like a problem to play a guy who's maaaaaybe 6' (I don't believe the 6'1"/6'2" measurements) at the 2. Who does he guard? Is he going to be able to get his shot off consistently if a 6'4" B1G athlete is checking him? I dunno. If he were 3-4" taller, I think there'd be no issues here, but he's not. So...

Girard isn't B10 level from a physical standpoint in my opinion. He'd be very likely to have issues on the defensive end of the court nearly every game based on his size and lack of lateral movement.

His potential to make an impact at Michigan would be entirely based on Coach Beilein's ability to get him open shots from distance while hiding him on the defensive end. I have faith that Coach Beilein can get him a few open shots per game and against inferior competition early in the season, however I just don't think its plausible that we can hide him on defense.

I just don't know that an offer to a prospect that is likely to fulfill a Duncan Robinson type role at his peak, while being 8-9 inches shorter is the best utilization of a scholarship. That said, Coach Beilein has made us all look like fools at various points in his tenure, so perhaps he'll work his magic again if Girard hops aboard.

I read G Joe Girard, read the 1st sentence that said 6' 1" 165 lbs and thought "damn, maybe it is time to let Harbaugh go". Should have paid more attention to the title.

I’m 6’nothing & stood right next to Isiah outside a suite at the Palace ~20 years ago. We both had men’s dress shoes on & he was not taller than me & might have been shorter. We were only side by side for a couple of seconds, so I can’t say for sure, but if I had to guess i’d Say his actual height was 6’ or less.

Beyond that, Isiah had otherworldly basketball skills. With the same speed, balance, hops, handle, instincts, court vision, guts etc. he would have excelled at 5’9”. He might have been the best player ever at 6’5”+. It’s tough to compare him to anyone
