MBB Prediction: Where will we be ranked?

Submitted by Cold War on

What kind of ranking do we get after knocking off three top 10 teams in a row?

After beating three straight top ten teams
And two of them on the road, we have to be top ten. Do I see us getting shafted ? Of course I do, but we deserve top ten.

Who cares about rankings.  We're unbeaten in the B1G and on a roll.  Just keep playing good ball;  and to be sure:  we are playing some great ball right now.

What's crazy is that GRIII hasn't really been great during this streak.  He's been.. good.. at times, but really below his supposed potential as a supposed lottery pick.  He disapeared for large portions of this game.   Imagine if he was able to impose this ample talent on this game meaningfully? We won despite a replacement-level contribution from GRIII.

Ok I'm rambling, but overall, hell yeah!  We're sitting pretty, and also in my opinion getting better!  Mark my words this team will continue to get better.

Based on doing something that no other team in the country can claim ( 3 straight wins over the top 10 teams) they deserve a top 10 ranking. Unfortunately, they will probally end up getting shafted by idiots who shouldn't have a vote and end up in the 10-15 range.

In the last poll, the first 4-loss team appeared at #8 and that behavior seems fairly consistent for the voters, so I imagine somewhere around there is the ceiling just based on typical voting patterns. We were in the high-20s (27th or 28th, I think) two polls ago and 21st in the last one, so if I had to project a guess (possibly a bad guess, but one all the same), I would say mid-teens for Michigan. Hopefully, I undershot that and it is higher - surely beating three top-10s in a row accounts for something.

I don't know where they'll be placed in the arbitrary rankings of media prima donnas and don't care at this point. Right now, 7-0 in the B1G is what matters to me.

But I'll tell you what I'm already about goddamn sick of, and that's the downplaying of this win by the media and of course the jack-off fan base of East Lansing. "Injuries, injuries, injuries, Michigan isn't shit, bullshit refs (yes, really!), we'll kill them in Ann Arbor, MSU is still one of the best teams in the country, Michigan just got lucky again". Just fucking stop already. Of all the things I've heard, I think that pisses me off the most: winning three in a row over Wisconsin, Iowa, and MSU was luck, just it like last year when it was VCU, Kansas, Florida, and Syracuse. It takes away from the hard work and the damn good job done by Coach Beilein and these kids. Fuck your injuries, I don't care, that's part of the game. Did, "O-line depth was destroyed by RR's recruiting and Michigan had to play three kids smack in the middle" fly as an excuse for the football team's performance this year? Of course it didn't, and trying it with any one of them would get you laughed out of the room. You play the game with who you have, personnel problems are part of the game. I'm sick of hearing it's tough shit when it's Michigan, and it's a valid excuse for Sparty.

Five out of seven isn't lucky. The run to the National Championship Game wasn't lucky. 7-0 in the Big Ten isn't lucky. Michigan has arrived as a program, just like we have to constantly hear about how you have in football, so fucking deal with it. And by the way, this gigantic gulf you still imagine between the programs in general, as well as the two teams right now, doesn't exist. Michigan has one terrible loss to UNC-Charlotte, yes, but beyond that, I can live with the 7-point road loss to a Top 25 team, a loss at Cameron, and a two-point loss (still the closest anyone's come) to the best team in the country. You somehow want to act like your record that includes a four-point win over a Kentucky team starting four freshmen in the second game of the year, decent wins over Oklahoma and Texas, an OT home win over an offensively-deficient and now-exposed Ohio State team, a bunch of other wins over teams who won't be dancing in March, to go with a home-court ass-stomping by 11-7 North Carolina indicates some Grand Canyon-like chasm between you and Michigan, fine. I'll just go with the head-to-head result.

Sorry, rant over. tl; dr version, "Just shut the fuck up, East Lansing. You lost, OK?".

Hahah, I wouldn't care, and thanks. They need to hear this. I'm tired of them. Tired of the downplaying of everything this team does, tired of hearing they're elite. I'm not saying they're not very good, but show me why they deserve mention with Arizona right now. Sell me on them going through the likes of Florida and Syracuse in the tournament. I just don't see it, Payne and Dawson be damned. And while we're at it, I'm tired of hearing that Izzo's one National Championship in his nearly twenty seasons makes him the best coach in the country.

12-15 range. The big wins should help for sure, but this time of year you don't seem to see a ton of leap-frogging in the rankings over teams who have continued to win, regardless of the competition they face. So moving that much would be pretty impressive. Our tournament seeds, both B1G and NCAA, are the numbers that will mean far more. With these wins they have likely moved into a 3 seed, but there's still 11 conference games to go and they can't fall asleep behind the wheel for any of them. Everyone is beatable now, including UM. As impressive as the win streak is, a losing streak could really take the wind out of the sails. See: OSU and Wisc. Remember when they were both ranked in the top 5?

THe last several weeks the B1G had three teams in the top 10 and we beat them all two on the road.  No way this team (or the B1G) should be without at least one or two teams in the top 10 and thus sayeth KenPom as well.

...rankings don't matter in basketball (other than for historical purposes)!

Hell, keep ranking us low...that way we keep beating higher ranked teams.

In the end, it doesn't matter. It's not the BCS it's not even part of the criteria for the Tournament.

That Charlotte loss is continually boning us. We'd probably be top-8 without it. Instead, I think we'll be in the 9-13 range. Also, I think the Charlotte loss knocks us down a seed in the tourny. It will make a 3 into a 4, 4 into a 5, and so on. That was a bad, bad loss.

We lost by 1 to the number 1 team in the country and just beat two #3's on the road.  Plus we have improved each and every game.  I like where we are headed regardless of rank!

11.5 spots ahead of Ohio

4 ahead of Wisc

1 ahead of MSU

3 behind Iowa (largely due to Iowa's having some blowout wins as well as close losses)

That said, I expect UM will get short-changed once again by the non-computer rankings (AP, Coaches poll).  These human polls have trouble making big adjustments from prior rankings.  In any case, we seem to be proving them wrong every week, and making the computer rankings look a lot more accurate.

Rankings (Sagarin, KenPom)

Iowa (3 ,4)

Michigan (5,8)

Michigan  State (2,13)

Wisconsin (9 ,12)

Ohio (18,18)
