Matta's verbal gaffe from last night
Minor line at the end of the Sullinger-coming-back story on ESPN today. Emphasis added below:
Sullinger said he made the decision following the game, but coach Thad Matta said it's the message Sullinger has been sending to him all season.
"Oh he's been telling me that all along," Matta said. "And I believe it. He told me, draw me up a contract, whatever you need to do. I believe him when he says it."
Given that the football program is now under a cloud, can men's hoops be far behind? What would such a mythical contract promise Sullinger in return for staying? Maybe Matta meant "We'll have to renegotiate the previous contract in light of your performance?"
In any case, not a smart choice of words.

not too smart. Choice of words is questionable at the least! I can see every OSU fan and alum clinching their cheeks as this came out of his mouth. Maybe Thadeus thinks hes above the law as his football counterpart believes he is.
Those people don't realize there's anything wrong with what the man said...
I guess I wouldn't read that much into those statements, but I do think that once the NCAA starts looking into the football team, it probably won't be much of a jump to look at the bball team and see if they too decided that the best tattoos are those obtained through the bartering system.
Oh c'mon. You can totally see the point that he is making -- he is willing to promise in written form that he won't go to the NBA. If Darius Morris/Beilein said this, you wouldn't have any problem with it.

Just because someone says the word contract doesn't mean we need a thred about it.

BlockM said the word contract in his post. I think this actually warrants a diary.

I look forward to reading it.
stupid shit all of the time... in the 95 mich/UVA game when hayes made the game winning TD catch, during the post game presser he said thats what i am PAID to do, he corrected himself quickly and the room started laughing...

I was 11 yrs old and vividly remember that game. That game probably sparked my Michigan fandom and consequently caused me to go there for college more than any other single event of my childhood. (it also doesn't hurt thats its a pretty damn good school).

part of the game was t. butterfield dropping the pass right before the TD catch...
That throw had me convinced Scott Dreisbach was the greatest quarterback of all time... at age 8.
First game I ever attended. It was then that I truly realized what Tiki Barber football was all about.

Awesome. That means we'll all get to see Max Bienfeldt pwn him.
Either that or Max will breathe on him and Sullinger will get free throws for it.

He's merely talking about the same type of moral contract that Saint Tressel made the Tat Five commit to before allowing them to participate in the Sugar Bowl.

oh for fuck's sake OP

unless he'd said "Tattoo me up a contract."

I agree poor choice of words, but I think he is just saying he is completely committed to the program and has no intentions of leaving. That being said, man am I happy they lost. A #1 overall seed and could only manage a sweet 16 app? I thought I was done with the tourney after michigan lost but I got sucked back in last night. I love rooting againts those bastards.

I watched the game with two of my OSU friends. We had plenty of time to drink good beer and trash talk throughout the game. I was so thrilled when UK finally sealed the deal at the end of the night. I credit the Red Stripe.
Hooray beer!!!
you have OSU friends???

1 year or 24,000 miles, with free maintenance and an allowance to be able to drive to neighboring states.
any reasonable person would view that as a figure of speech. The choice of words is fine to me. To even take that seriously doesn't even make sense. How do you enforce a contract that would be against NCAA rules to begin with?!
That's exactly what SMU did back in the day...
I mean, it's probably just a figure of speech ... but I don't doubt that their basketball program will soon be under investigation
Under contract? Unheard of!
Actually, I interpreted that as "staying" as well......sounds like Sullinger is still in Columbus this fall.
