Marcus Hall: 10 years later

Submitted by TacoLivesOn on November 27th, 2023 at 8:47 PM

i just googled to figure out why it's the "Marcus Hall epic double bird of the week" (as seen in Brian's post game reviews).

Turns out the Columbus Dispatch recently published a "10 years later" article that explains the incident (from 2013), and the aftermath.  If you didn't know, he flipped off the entirety of Michigan stadium after being ejected from a game.

I thought the article was worth reading as it added to my understaning of the rivalry, and it is a good reminder that he's a real person who (mostly) regrets the in-the-moment reaction of his juvenile younger self.

They interviewed Meyer, who now says he thinks the one game suspension he handed out for this was excessive.  shocker.

I cannot believe it has been 10 years. One of the most exciting games that ended up just short. That same team went from having no second half first downs the week before vs Iowa  had -60 yards rushing vs MSU, and 27-27 was able to put up 600 yards!

Then they run the perfect 2 point play in garbage time vs K-State.

One thing that Hoke was good at, was getting the team up to play OSU

We went to that game, intending to meet up with some OSU friends after.  Urban Meyer said something about wanting to score 100 point points someday and the way the team had been playing I was worried it might be possible.  But... our team played like their hair was on fire and almost pulled it off.  In the bar after, you would have thought Michigan won, based on the mood of  the fans in our group.  We Michigan fans were thrilled our team had played so well, and OSU was stunned that we had almost upset them.

Urban Meyer considers ANY punishment for ANY crime excessive…if the player is good. Hall must have been in the Circle of Trust.

Hall has nothing to be ashamed of. Just because he wouldn’t do it at 30ish doesn’t mean he needs to regret flipping off an entire stadium at 20ish

And we got more confirmation that Urban is a huge dick. “The dude can’t control his emotions”. Way to be an adult…

It's behind a paywall, and if you think I am subscribing to the Columbus Fucking Dispatch to read an article, well, you've got another thing coming, buster!

I was at the game and was shocked how alive we were along with a very un-Borges like game plan and execution. Even the final TD drive was well done until the failed 2-pt play. I was fine with showing the same play we used earlier in the year to Dileo vs. ND until they called TO. And then go to the Gallon behind center, Devin flanked out left or right and run the ball off the short side. That played worked well for Breaston against Sweater Vest exactly 10 years earlier (Navarre was flanked out). I doubt Ohio would have been ready for it under a different coach.

You post actually brought great pleasure to me as I reflected how badly UM was falling apart in Year 3 of Hoke. And here we are with the chance for 3 B1G titles in a row!

Crazy to think if Hoke wins that game, I doubt he gets canned in 2014. We'd have missed a chance to get JH after 2014. No chance Brandon nor Hackett fires him if he had 2 wins over Ohio in 3 tries (with one 6 point loss) after a decade against Tressel of 1-9.

Let me tell you youngsters a story about the first bird that flew in front of a Michigan crowd. Back in February of 1980, Michigan (led by Mike McGee) hosted Wisconsin in a basketball game at Crisler. Late in the game, Badger star Claude Gregory fouled out and the crowd applauded loudly.

So Claude stood up, raised his right hand and middle finger, and slowly turned around twice, making sure that every section of Crisler Arena saw it.

I was there as a student, and it was AWESOME. I was also there in 2013 to see Marcus Hall's bird, so I'm wondering if I'm the only person alive who saw both the Epic Single Bird and the Epic Double Bird.

I lucked into tickets for that game, with friends from my undergraduate days (mid-70s).  It was f---ing wonderful for about 55 minutes of game time, or whenever it was that Hoke/Borges dreamed that stupid 2-pt. conversion play.  (I thought going for two was a great decision, but the playcall itself was supremely stupid.)

The fight itself was also stupid.  If we had been more disciplined it would not have been eject one each way, offsetting penalties, yada-yada, BS.  The 2021 team handled it better, with more provocation.

Congrats young grasshopper! (I will not be increasing the clicks for the Columbus Dispatch). Next time, a better synopsis of the article would be nice.

That was the only time I’ve seen The Game in person.  Never sat down, and was strangely happy after Michigan lost.  With expectations of a bad loss, seeing the team look well coached, and play hard I came away strangely happy.

we even had friendly banter with some OSU fans. Best sporting event I’ve attended
