Magee's Comments

I'm curious as to people's reactions to this.  After the game Magee was asked by the press for his opinion of Threet's performance and replied "he was inconsistent as always."  Leaving aside the accuracy of the comment (dead on) I think its inappropriate to describe a college guy that way in the press.  It encourages the know nothing boo birds, not to mention harming confidence that you are supposed to building during a tough season.  I am seeing a distressing trend in this staff to call out players publicly, as opposed to privately, which I don't think it the right way to coach college guys.  The usual coach speak of "we have to get better, its on me and the staff to coach better" is a stereotype for a reason--college is different from the pros, and I think we need to protect what we say about our players in public, IMO.

That should be the motto of every organization. Yell at Threet in private, but don't air dirty laundry to the press. That is how you become the Dallas Cowboys.

Also, whether it is execution or scheme, isn't the D coordinator respnsible for both? Doesn't he teach how to tackle, how to position yourself in certain situations, and how to read Os?

the comments in context, so I will reserve judgement. But I really dont mind it. If he said something like, Threet sucks and thats why we lost, thats a different story. I mean what if he said something about Minor fumbling again back when he was fumbling every other carry? "Well, Minor was fumbling a lot again today" I mean its the truth.

 

Now if he was blaming the loss and stuff and said, threet...inconsistant...mostly why we lost. Then yeah i dont like it.

in general. While I don't think the assessment is overly harsh, I would prefer the coaches to rip players privately if need be and keep their negative comments away from the press. That being said, I don't think its that big of a deal really. He could have said much worse and been accurate.

Go read the LATIMES articles about UCLA and their QB struggles. They use the word inconsistancy(?) alot. Like alot alot. But the context and subtext of quotes given by one person and written down by another are hard to decipher through certain writers, me included. hahaha. Anyhow this quote may have been part of a larger one. And well, the writer may have an agenda, or he may not. my hope at least, was that it was part of a lot of verbage. I mean, no offense, but the Big House kept it's name because everything was handled,"IN HOUSE." If you screwed up on campus and it didnt hit the media, you didnt play and they didnt talk. if someone asked it was usually a quick answer and then a,'next question." And if you played bad, LLoyd, Gary and Bo would let you have it in private because in the realm of public opinion and the media they needed to look as a tight knit team. Anything that destroyed the team image was gone. So comments like this peak the spidey senses of writers trying to find the common thread. Just dont give em the munitions and theres no war. Rich is a great guy and so is McGee. I mean that. Win or lose though you have to represent yourself and your University as a whole.

I really don't have a problem with that quote.  It's a little more direct than I would make, but really, it's not that different than "We were inconsistent throwing the ball."  You hear coaches say that all the time, but obviously the QB is the one throwing the ball.  I wish Rodriguez and Co. were more like Carr in their desire to be secretive, but oh well.  They each have their positives and negatives.

Maybe it's just the transition from Lloyd, but it does seem like Rich, Shafer, and Magee seem more interested in deflecting criticism from themselves and the position coaches than in defending their players. 

We all realize that the players are making mistakes out there, but y'all are the ones getting paid good money to coach them, so take the heat whether its deserved or not and ream the kids all you want in practice. 

 Considering the relative degree of talent on offense and defense, Shafer's comments irritate me the most.
