M only half point behind Stanford in official Director's Cup standings
As mentioned in my previous update, the Director's Cup standings were officially released this morning:
And, as predicted by my analysis, Stanford leads Michigan by only 0.5 points. See that previous post for some discussion. Going to be tough to overcome the Cardinal, but this could be the closest we've ever gotten (in 2003-04 we finished 111 points behind them).
That's where my analysis had us too.
Something is fishy here. My analysis has us in the lead by half a point. $tanford.
Is there any way to determine what would have to happen for M to take the lead?
Insert the McGary “Win The Game” picture into pretty much all spring sports and that’s a general idea
From the original post on this topic:
So far, Michigan is showing well in Spring, but this is the time when sunnier schools shine, with sports like Water Polo, Beach Volleyball, and Tennis. Stanford already has 59 points on us, so it's going to be tough, but if there's ever a year to beat them, this is probably it.
So it ain’t happening.
Yeah, it's getting worse. With Men's and Women's Lacrosse and Women's Rowing added to the picture, Stanford is now 94 points ahead of us in Spring. Golf is finished, but I can't find the final team standings to calculate points. All that's left is Baseball, Softball, and T&F. If we won the Baseball championship while Stanford got eliminated immediately, we'd have a chance.
Also, North Carolina has technically moved ahead of us, as well. So we're sitting in 3rd. This is before final adjustments to ensure only 19 sports are scoring for any given school.
Just imagine where we would be if UM football did better last year :(
Umm… guessing we’d end up in second place still?
I guess the best update to this would be what sports are still being decided and where Michigan compares to Stanford in those respective sports....
I am not willing to do this, but if someone else is, I will definitely read it.
Agree here. +1 for sharing the sentiment
If hockey hadn't been booted from the tournament due to covid, we might well be in the lead with even one win.
is there any financial/scholarship money involved by winning this crap?

I say everyone should just withdraw themselves from consideration for the Director’s Cup and just form their own award.
When Stanford is essentially shoehorned in to win the thing every year it’s really not much of an award anymore.
We need a ransomware attack on Stanford's endowment fund.
HP, where are you!!!
I'm sure Stanford's tidilywinks or hopscotch team will put them over the top.
If beach volleyball is a varsity sport for Stanford, the Big Ten should start competitive ice fishing to even up the ledger. And varsity Snow Shoveling at distances from 50 meters to 200 meters.
The robber barons win again.
Well done, OP.
How are you at stock picking?
What was all this crap about Stanford supposedly cancelling a bunch of sports programs? I'm assuming they did an about face and brought them all back? That was our only chance to pass them.

Rifle is an NCAA sport?!?!? Really? We really need to step up our Bowling team. It's freaking Michigan. There have to be some good bowlers around.
