M 3rd in final Fall Director's Cup standings
These were released two weeks ago, but I don't think anyone posted them. For those who care, NACDA released its final Fall standings for the Director's Cup, and Michigan is solidly in 3rd thanks to strong showings in football (yay), field hockey, and women's soccer.
Surprisingly, BYU is 1st, and Stanford is all the way down at 17. Still a lot of sports left to compete, of course.
Standings after Fall:
- BYU
- Notre Dame
- Michigan
- Wisconsin
- Penn State
17. Stanford
31. Michigan State

Wow - we have several elite sports competing now (women’s bball, both gymnastics, wrestling, ice hockey, softball to name a few). Could we actually win the Stanford cup??

I believe that men's and women's swimming and diving are both doing well and ranked above Stanford.

Water polo is also Top 10 and just beat 3 Top 10 teams.

And certainly men's basketball has nowhere to go but up too! That Northwestern game is the launching pad for taking it one game at a time. Go Blue!

Do we have a chance to take first?

Well, with hockey, womens basketball, womens gymnastics, wrestling, swimming and softball…maybe this is our year.

I was under the impression that Stanford was always heavily leading this. I assume that must be for the final standings for the total year and not just for one season - correct?

Stanford has won the Director's Cup every year of its existence, except for its first (1993-94, UNC) and its last (2020-21, Texas). These are just interim rankings that they publish after the fall season (and again after the winter season). The final rankings will be end of June.

For context, here's where Stanford was in the final Fall standings each year:
20-21 3rd
18-19 1st
17-18 1st
16-17 1st
15-16 1st
14-15 1st
13-14 1st
12-13 1st
11-12 1st
You get the idea. So them being so low after the Fall this year is definitely a sign that others have an actual chance to finish at the top this year. Begs the question, what's going on in Palo Alto?

So... there's a chance. Nice.

If I recall correctly, in the wake of the college admissions scandal, they cut a number of smaller nonrev sports, ones that are considered "country club" sports. And that could be the reason they're starting to lose their advantage/dominance in the cup standings.[EDIT: just saw the below convo about this now].

To hell with Stanford! Michigan of the west!!
January 27th, 2022 at 1:11 PM ^
Didn’t Stanford drop a few sports recently? I could be wrong, but that would give them less of a pool to earn points
January 27th, 2022 at 1:28 PM ^
They dropped 11 sports in the summer of 2020.
January 27th, 2022 at 2:18 PM ^
Yeah, this is likely a major reason. The Director's Cup does limit the number of sports that will be included in a school's final total, but obviously having more sports to potentially score in is a huge advantage.

Fall standings have little predictive power of the final standings.

rposly begs to differ

I would agree as it pertains to non-Stanford schools. My comment above only proves that Stanford has historically taken such a massive lead right out of the gate that they're hard to overtake. This year, that isn't the case. That doesn't mean, however, that it's likely BYU or ND take home the trophy.

Michigan has a GREAT shot at winning this thing this year..with sports and points still out there available to Michigan this might be the year..the fact that Stanford is 17th right now is a good thing for Michigan..the teams we have remaing out there, many are ranked top 5...Sit back get ready I think we pull this off this year weve been getting closer and closer
January 27th, 2022 at 1:56 PM ^
I would imagine Stanford cutting some sports in the past year has an effect on this?
January 27th, 2022 at 2:04 PM ^
Is the Director’s Cup anything but a way to give country-club sports added influence?
