Lynn Henning throws crazy praise at Hoke

Crazy praise is right. Also love his military reference at the end:
"One man, Dantonio, continued expanding his fleet in impressive ways. The other guy, Hoke, the relative newcomer, finished at about the speed George Patton flew across France."
lol wat

Yeah, I find war/football comparisons obnoxious and somewhat offensive, not to mention lazy. Both involve uniforms, but thats about as far as the similarities go.

Connecting a Michigan coach with George Patton... Hmm where have I heard this before?
Bo & Bob Ufer, great great men.

I know Henning seems to be in the tank for Sparty, but can anyone really consider their class impressive, given that 1) they enjoyed their best year in forever and 2) their in-state rival went through a coaching change? Per Rivals, MSU has the #31 class, with two four-star recruits out of 22.

This was it. And it's not going to happen. Think how their class would be ranked if the #1 player in the State hadn't been gift-wrapped for them.

...is way over the top, but I still find the tendency of Michigan fans (not M-Wolverine) to whine about Hoke's positive press to be nothing short of idiotic. I'm all for the media insanity if it's producing double rainbows and unicorns.

I think it's not so much that we hate the drooling over Hoke by the media, as much as hatred for the way they set out to tar and feather RRod from the word "Mallett."
I'll never hate being looked upon well by the media. I will always hate the media types who are "dead to me" though.

Treat them like the Russians in WWII- know they weren't originally on the right side, but be glad they're on the Eastern Front now. But always keep an eye on them.

some alleged reporters could be shot, court-martialed and sent to the Russian Front.

I could've done without that sparty slipping all of the Dantonio praise inside an article that is supposed to be about what a great job Hoke has done, though.

Henning has about as much business writing about college football as I do writing about nuclear physics, but any positive press for Michigan is great. I hope all of the assholes who spent the last three years denigrating the program flip-flop. I won't forget what they did, but John Q Public will.
When it comes to the health of the program, especially in recruiting, John Q Public is a pretty important guy.

is a pussy.

college football recruiting and world war 2 generals? what?
February 2nd, 2011 at 3:50 PM ^
...but this is absurd. Henning wrote:
He will win, and win big, at Michigan. The Big House already has been put in order. By his second season, the Wolverines will be back roughly where they were when Lloyd Carr headed for retirement three years ago.
Oh, you mean back to losing to a I-AA team, then getting incinerated by Oregon, to cap off the worst back-to-back home losses in Michigan football history?
I like Hoke. I don't like Henning.

But I took that to mean by year 2 he'd have us up to previous levels, then after that, year 3 and beyond, win big.

But keep the dislike up. The post wasn't supposed to be a detente with LH. I crucified him for his stuff back when Rich was coach, and he's still the same guy. This was just such a departure....

that the vast majority of "professional" sports journalists covering him are best suited to writing advertising copy for the local dollar store.

Has there even been a sports man with a fruitier style of writing than Lynn Henning?
