[LOCKED] Completely OT: ESPN's OTL reports on former Arizona Track & Field coach and student-athlete [disturbing]

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

Here is the link.

I ask the mods to PLEASE lock this thread. The article was in D1Ticker this morning so I read it then, it's now up on the front page of ESPN.com.

http://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/18900659/university-arizona-coach-threatened-one-athletes-blackmail-violence-death-school-stopped-him

It's OT, but does deal with college athletics and is so in depth that others may want to read on it...

MOD EDIT - Locked at user request - LSA

As an AZ resident (though one who doesn't follow AZ news that closely), this is the first I've heard of this. So far as I know, there's no history or culture with this stuff in the way that we've seen with Michigan State the last several months.

U of A is an excellent school, maybe not on par with U of M, but certainly a school that is trying to be in that conversation. I can't imagine this ends well for anyone in Tuscon.

Lastly, there's definitely no pleasure in this as an ASU fan. No one should ever have to go through what she went through...

Why should it be locked? It should be read but not discussed? I don't think the story is uncommon at all. That fact that the guy was a coach and she was one of his athletes makes the beginning of the relationship certainly a bad idea, but not automatically rape. I think the coach, like many other assholes, simply couldn't handle the breakup, became violent, and will now pay the legal price for what he did.

You seem to be implying that the relationship was mutual at the start and that it was just a bad idea to get into a relationship with your coach or athlete... that's not at all what the article says happened... what actually happened was rape.

That poor girl was terrorized by a coach. I can't even imagine how her parents feel.

I don't know what to think about the wife of the coach sticking by him. Maybe she's letting the legal process play out. Yikes.

Over a student athlete is tremendous, and she had to endure it for years. This is one of the worst cases of psychological and sexual abuse I have heard about.

I was very upset watching this. My anger switched back and forth between the coach and the university's handling of it(or lack if you prefer). To hear that the university never even had a meet with the student blows me away. I'm sure it's some legal wrangling, can any of our lawyer types(real or jailhouse) chime in.

failure of people in charge of things just because they're in charge of things.  Greg Byrne goes to Alabama and will never be called to account.  Fred Harvery continues as head coach.  At least Carter is going on trial.  My blood is boiling as I have two daughters.  I would likely end up on trial if a coach did that to my daughter.

After what happened at Baylor and more closely to home at MSU, you'd have to think there have been problems like this for a very long time and at many schools.

Absolutely terrible

I won't share personal stories, but my family is right in the middle of a bad situation with someone having absolute power, and wanting to use it for unfair advantage over a female underneath him in rank. It is very likely going to result in a court martial. The wheels of justice move slowly, and it could be another year and a half before this is resolved. I'll just say that those with power have to resist the temptation to use their influence in inappropriate ways.
