Lloyd still classy - visits Grady
I agree, it is very hard to find fault with him as a person, great man.
agreed great person, coach in todays' world of NCAA Football, not so much
I never felt that Bo could ever deliver an NC. Ditto with Llyod (I was wrong there), but that doesn't really matter.
I would not trade either one for any coach around, past or present. There were no greater ambassadors for the University of Michigan, and its the University that really, ultimately matters most.
This was typical, vintage Llyod Carr.
Llyod?
Llyod?
Trash MY spelling again!!!!
Let me see, its i before e except after c; o before y, except after two l's or sum such damn thing!
Lloyd Carr is a truly exceptional man. I would gladly and eagerly entrust unto him the education and well-being of my son. I cannot stress how grateful I am that Lloyd Carr will forever be associated with the University of Michigan--he is arguably its finest representative.
In the "bottom line" society that we live in, we forget that amatuer athletics are about competing and growing as an athlete and person. Lloyd Carr accomplished these things and more with his student/athletes. Laugh about the phrase "Michigan Man" if you choose, but he embalizes what the university stands for.
is a title that has been thrown around lately without anyone taking heed to what it actually means.
Coach Carr, in my book, is the latest in a short line of people truly deserving of the connotations associated with the title.
He is a tremendous man, no question, Jim.
I knew a girl who used to date his son. She told me that he was a pretty poor father. So was Bo apparently.
Remember that behind many 'great' men, there are people that pay the price for that 'greatness.'
He is a great coach though, and definately a Michigan man
Not sure if you can be held libel for something like this on the webz, but that's really shitty man.
I also find it interesting that you make a claim like that against Carr and then conclude "Michigan Man".
The hearsay you base the claim of Lloyd being a poor father on is pretty shameful. I imagine many of the qualities that Lloyd demonstrated as a coach, the focus on values, on character, on learning, might make him seem a tough father. How do you define "poor"? Not giving his son everything he wants? Focusing on more than the typical superficialities that occupy a teenager or young twenty-year-old's mind? What I am trying to say is that spreading something on the internet that his son's girlfriend said, for WHATEVER reason she said it (we do not know), about a former beloved coach is, like chrisgocomment said, real shitty man.
However, saying "So was Bo apparently", this time spreading derogatory things about our deceased former coach, without even pretending to give anything even resembling the spurious evidence you gave about Lloyd, deserves, well, nothing less than a banhammer warning.
I don't think we should not bash Bo because he's Bo or not bash Lloyd because he's Lloyd. But, Jesus, if you are, have something more than this.
Also, I wonder what the previous poster's definition of "Michigan Man" is if it includes "shitty father".
I agree, I dont think Bo and Lloyd are untouchable. Bash them all you want, with as little evidence as you want, for coaching issues, university issues, things of a public nature. And then deal with the normal consequences. But I think that making such personal accusations as someone being a poor father, with such flimsy evidence, crosses a line.
The girl you knew was probably an untrustworthy skank with no discipline.
On the other hand we have no basis to bash this woman. She may be an untrustworthy skank as you imply but she may be a good upstanding girl. I say this not to imply what she said about Lloyd was right but that we should not sit here and speculate on either side of this discussion. IMO a Michigan man would put himself above getting into this conversation as there is proof on neither side of it.
I was merely administering the unmerited character assassination of someone I do not know. That seems to be a theme in this thread.
Well, I met a guy that said he was Lloyd's neighbor. After twenty minutes of waterboarding and electroshocking we decided to believe him. He said he was a helluva a guy and always took time to chat with this guy and his dad about everything from lawn mowing to beating uos. He never said a thing about him being a lacking family man. Obviously take this with the same grain of salt you take the "bad father" guy's claims but that's my Lloyd story.
Carr's first marriage did fall apart (as did Jim Tressel's, incidentally), which probably put his son in middle of some ugly marital disputes. The number of hours these guys put in during the season is crazy. Throw in the stress that comes with the position and maybe it's not surprising that some of them displace their frustration when they get home.
Or end up spending little time at home at all. With the hours required (coming in at 7 am and leaving at 10 pm is not unheard of) plus having to deal with issues on a moments notice (players in bar fights and such) I don't think they get much time to spend at home during the season anyway. And then there are the many trips visiting recruits during the off-season so there is little break for these coaches and assistants. Throw in the frequent moves due to job changes and the life of a coaches family can be very rough.
...is the exorbitant salaries that college coaches earn.
While that is very true, just bringing home a ton of money doesn't automatically make you a good father/husband. Not saying it makes you a bad one either.
..was equating the amount of money one pulls in with their quality as a father or husband. My point was that the ridiculous hours and many issues a coach has to deal with has recently been "rewarded" with an exorbitant level of salary.
Very true and my bad if I took the meaning of your above post incorrectly. I thought in replying to my post about the long hours of a coach being hard on their family, you were saying that the money made up for it. And while I do agree they deserve a higher salary than the average worker for the amount of work they put in, some of these 2-3 million dollars a year salaries do seem exorbitant.
before his salary ever approached "exorbitant" levels, if it ever did.
that I take a girl's evaluation of someone's fatherhood is the day I cut my balls off and jump in front of a bus
"A pretty poor father"... what the hell does that mean anyway? Did he not take his son to the mall often enough for her liking? Maybe he didn't buy his kid a hot pink Cadillac and a pony for his Super Sweet 16?
Yes LLoyd is human and thus falls short of beardog07 standards but what LLoyd did in this case with Grady is worthy of commendation. If LLoyd were to comment on a classy act by beardog07, I do not think we would have seen any criticism from LLoyd.
Happened to see Christopher Hitchens bashing of Mother Theresa and it reinforced the impossible standards others will impose on their fellow humans.
I'm not saying Lloyd's gesture- if true- wasn't nice, but doesn't he live in Ann Arbor or the surrounding area? It's not like he flew from his Florida retirement home to visit Grady. I'm sure that there are a ton of retired coaches that wouldn't visit a jailed former player but there are also certainly a lot (more than a "few, if any") that would.
Again, not knocking Lloyd's legacy as a father-figure HC-- just sayin' that I don't find this particular instance all that noteworthy.
Really, wow!
Incredible. This is so wrong on so many levels.
