Let's give it up for Rod Smith

Submitted by touchdown chad henne on

I don't know to what extent we can attribute the individual effort of an assistant in recruiting, but if commitments do come down to how well one coach does, I have to give props to Rod Smith.

Should things come through with Dee Hart (and it appears in the post below that they will), he'll have brought in Tate (and Jeremy Gallon) in '09, Gardner, MRob and Richard Ash in 2010, and Hart in 2011.

I know he has a strong connection to Florida from his days with USF, and that anyone recruiting Florida is going to have their numbers inflated a bit, but that's a solid bit of recruiting for a coaching staff working mostly on promise. Other coaches have done just as well—including Fred Jackson, despite a few years under his belt and a somewhat awkward fit in the staff —but Smith is working one of the toughest areas in the business and doing well.

My two cents, anyway.

Rod Smith is the man. For someone who could get a decent head coaching position, he is really good work for us.

Rod Smith is the man, and if he wanted to, he could have gotten a much better coaching gig as a head coach somewhere by now because he has done really good work with our offense, which was stellar last year and should be much improved this year.

I mean, the triple post was epic, but I'm just keepin it real.

Although, this could be a classic example of when keepin it real, goes wrong.

Cue Dave Chappelle...

To know just who and where these supposed head coaching gigs are that he could have had. I'm not sure Smith enjoys any sort of great or even good reputation as a quarterbacks coach, offensive guru, or anything besides being a decent recruiter.

And the uptick in recruiting is in no small part probably due to him now being at Michigan.

But it's actually a gif, with Christopher Walken blowing RM's head off with a shotgun from a limo with a Burger King sticker on it.

It's quite funny--and it's Walken.

EDIT: I see it as a still shot of Ronny Mac--and I don't get the embedded videos and a lot of the pix here. Must need an Adobe update or something. So I can't tell if you guys can see it as the gif, or just the picture.

is just completely unbeatable on the recruiting field. I mean, I've discussed a lot of top flight recruiters on this board. Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, even Pete Carroll, and though they were great, they just don't compare to Rod Smith. The way he cuts in so fast, and just chooses the perfect spot to pounce for the commit.

Lloyd Carr had some great recruiters on his staff, but nobody comes close to Rod. He's just a recruting mad dog, and he will tear the competing schools apart and GET THAT COMMITMENT. He knows who's got the skill, who's got the moves. He impresses at every level. There is not another talent like him, and I'll sign that and seal it with my own signet ring.
