Late Night M Hockey at Alaska

Submitted by redwings8831 on

No TV, but there is a online feed from Alaska for $7 (link on mgoblue). Live stats at http://www.sidearmstats.com/uaf/mhockey/index.htm and live audio at http://linux0.cs.uaf.edu/radio/playlists/ksua16mono.m3u.

Huge chance to gain 3 points tonight with Michigan State losing at Western, Miami losing at Ferris State, and Notre Dame losing at Ferris State.

0-0. Michigan on the PP about 3 minutes into the first.

With Scooter Vaughan playing so well and scoring like crazy why is he playing in our 4th line? I would think he earned a place higher up the pecking order than our 4th line.

If I am wrong I know you will tell me.  Also, I read that he is playing the 4th line from the live stat link above so sorry if I am wrong on this after all.

Thanks Yesman...guess we will just have to see how long he can keep this up.  Hope he at least keeps it up this weekend.  I like beating Alaska because of how important hockey is to them since they have hockey and curling.

says that Hogan is starting tonight... Is this accurate, from radio/stream?  If so, do we have a concrete reason?  Or do we just assume Red did it to try and get his team to play on Friday.  For once.

only 129 people listening? is that the number he said? might have been 159. We should have at least 10 times that, just so they freak out at our fanbase turning out in bigger numbers online than them in their own place.

And shit, they score again while I'm typing. Damn it.

they get blown out.  Killed 7,8,9,10,11,12-0.  Maybe it'll be a wake up call.  Maybe it will remind them of last season, maybe they'll decide to play well.  I know Merycyhurst (winless until tonight, now 1-4-1) should have done that, but I guess they decided to play it off too much as a "we-haven't-had-any-coaching" excuse and just blew it off.  There is no reason for this team to be playing so poorly.  They don't have the go-to-goal scorer of a Cammy/Porter/Morrison build, but they are deep enough where that shouldn't be a huge deal.

I don't know what exactly the issue is, other than just not playing hard enough.  I remember a moment from 2008-2009, the last time we were legitimately good.  I don't remember what game it was, but I remember somebody was skating through the neutral zone, he had the puck knocked off his stick, a second Michigan player came and got the puck, he lost it at the blue line, a third player swooped in to grab the puck and passed it, the receiving player couldn't handle it, but a Michigan player got to the puck, had it knocked off his stick, before finally some other Michigan player managed to get into the offensive zone.  Michigan set-up its attack and scored.  I remember that in all of that, the opposing team never had possession of the puck.  A Michigan player always seemed to be in exactly the right place at the right time, they knew where the puck was, where it was going to be, etc.  And that was just an example of the season, probably a little bit better than normal, but it wasn't absurd. The last two years, it's just been completely different.  The team looks completely lost when a puck takes a funny bounce, they lose it, miss a pass etc. they just look altogether disoriented, when they don't have clear possession.  If it gets knocked of someone's stick, I have absolutely no confidence Michigan is going to recover the puck.  That and the penalties are two huge differences.

I don't really understand.  Do the players just not get it anymore?  (Extreme longshot) Did our legendary coach just all of a sudden decide he didn't want to be a good coach anymore (because we all know how little Red cares about winning)?  Is it just working hard enough in games/practices etc.?  Is that on everyone, or is it on primarily the leaders?  Are we really just that much less talented than we appear on paper, even with all of our draft picks?

This is so frustrating, it's just so uncharacteristic of Michigan hockey in the last twenty years, to be this bad.  And honestly, a lot of the time so far this season and last season, it has been bad, not average, flat out bad.   Was our tourney run last year really just purely a miracle?  Or did they find something as a team that they didn't have the rest of the season?  If so, how can they repeat the exact same mistakes one year later, after experiencing not having "it" for most of the seaosn and then finding "it" at the end of the season.  I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir and nobody really needs to be reminded of all of this, but seriously, what gives?

The commentators just said they haven't seen Alaska play this well in a long time. Also, and I know it's a common excuse and our team has denied it so far this week, but that's a long, long trip to make. I get tired traveling 30 minutes to play in a hockey game, let alone 1500 miles. But I agree, we need to play better consistently. The second game of the weekend we have been awesome, but we always start off slow.

1:41 long 5-on-3 Michigan up (which by the way we didn't score on), we were being outshot 21-8.  We're down 3-0.  I can understand losing, maybe even being out-played somewhat, consideing the long trip and Alaska playing well.  But not a 1-sided game.  Also, they've been there for most of two days.  It's not like they're getting off the plane, strapping on the skates and playing.  We're out face-offing them by 5, but that's about it.  This team is going to win nothing by playing only on Saturday.  And they haven't even been spectacular on Saturday.  They were decent against Ferris, but still not what I expect from Michigan.  UNO was better and I didn't see BGSU.  But after a full season plus a month, you'd think they'd figure it out.  If Red had much hair and/or ever showed emotion ever, he'd have to be pulling it out by now.  What more do you do?  I don't think at all that Michigan is purposely playing with so little drive, so how do you make them you know, actually think about playing a game with inspiration/desperation, whatever you want to call it?

It just boggles my mind that we continue to make the same f-ing mistakes every week!

And after hearing the players talk all week about how "they were going to bring it on Friday", I don't know what to think anymore.

This team is too good to give an effort like this--what gives!?
