The last time Purdue won in Ann Arbor...

Submitted by Thorin on
Brian Griese's dad was Purdue's QB, Cazzie Russell was the #1 overall pick of the New York Knicks in the NBA Draft, Dave Bing graduated from Syracuse and went on to become NBA Rookie of the Year, Montreal beat Detroit for the Stanley Cup, the Detroit Lions, well, they already sucked, England beat West Germany for the World Cup, The Sound of Music won Best Picture and a first class stamp would set you back 5 cents. These dudes lost to the eventual Rose Bowl Champions 22-21. I don't really have a point other than that was a really long time ago.

As long as we're talking about trends how about we add the last time Michigan lost to Michigan State two years in a row or the last time Michigan lost to Penn State in Ann Arbor. I am absolutely sure there are more trends that we can no longer hold true. Basic point past performance does not predict future results, especially not when your team is spiraling like our is.

Once this team appeared to be a contender, I feel like it started overthinking everything. I know that there is a bowl birth on the line so there is reason to be tight, but I think this team will respond well to their recent struggles now that very little is expected of them. The burden of expectations was a little much for this team in its infancy, I think the shoulders loosen up this weekend. And (this is not meant as a shot at RR as the conversation has been had), I think that Rich Rod's attention has been more on the overall shape and development of this teams mindset and understanding of the system in recent weeks, but I think he will coach this one down to down, he needs a win as he desperately needs a bowl game. We lost to Illinois in what was essentially their bowl game (national TV 3:30 game for 1-6 team = their superbowl). Bad loss, but we are better than Purdue. I like Big Blue in this one.

Horsecrap. Here is where Michigan and Purdue rank in statistical categories from conference games courtesy of the Big Ten website. Scoring Defense PU 7 M 11 Pass Offense PU 5 M 8 Pass Defense PU 1 M 7 TO Margin PU 10 M 11 Rush Defense PU 7 M 10 Total Offense PU 9 M 11 Total Defense PU 5 M Tied for 10 Pass Defense efficiency PU 3 M 9 First Downs gained PU 7 M 10 Opponent First Downs PU 3 M 7 Sacks By PU 4 M 7 Red Zone Offense PU T-7 M 11 Red Zone Defense PU 7 M 11 3RD Down Conversions PU 8 M 10 Opponent 3rd Down Conversion PU 5 M 6 Sacks Given Up PU 4 M T-8 Time of Possession PU 6 M 11 Kickoff Coverage PU 4 M 10 That's 18 categories out of the total of 30 listed by the Big Ten that PU is statistically better than we are. I'm NOT claiming that Purdue is a great, or even a good team, but I don't think that anybody looking at these numbers (and you should go to the B10 site and look at the numbers directly) can rationally claim that we are "better than Purdue." I'd rate their best victory much higher than our best victory, and I'd rate their worst loss (last weekend to Wisky) as no more humiliating than our beatdown at the hands of Illinois.

I know how confident I am that we can change that, and that is absolutely not confident in any way, shape, or form. I will be amazed and ecstatic if yet another streak doesn't die under RR. Although you'd like to figure that at some point, purely by chance, we'd uncork a good overall game for once.

When was the last time UM had a losing season.....when was the last time UM missed a bowl game, lost to the likes of Toledo etc etc etc......None of the streaks we had pre-RR are factors anymore. I love RR and he has given us some exciting football to watch, but sadly, the days of believing UM will win ______ game because they have never lost to ______ before, or at least for the past 50 years are gone. We could win or lose any given game we step on the field to play, Purdue is no exception.

Well, at least we still have the little brown jug...somehow. I think that was the only time sheridan had his superman cape on. All the other times he just had superman underwear.

Just what we need....another "hasn't happened in 40-or-so-years" event. At least by the end of this year we will have pretty much run out of them.

Around 4:00 on Saturday. If we lose this game then panic that we may be 5-7. I still belive that we are going to give OSU all they can handle. I think well be surprised by the effort from our team the next three weeks.

Did you have to use the phrase "the last time?" It's been a hex such as "in the last time Illinois beat us two times in a row," or "the last time Penn State won at the Big House."
