Jon Merrill reinstated to M Hockey Team

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on

There is a report on the M rivals site indicating that Jon Merrill has been reinstated to the Michigan Hockey club and will begin practicing but can't play until November 18th. Good news. A strong M hockey team should get stronger and they dodged the potential bullet of Jon signing a pro contract.

From the Daily:

“Jon has been reinstated to participate in team activities beginning today,” Berenson said in a team release. “He will resume practice with the team, but remains suspended from game action indefinitely.”
“Jon has an obligation to the team and he did not live up to those responsibilities,” Berenson said in an Oct. 1 release. “He needs to be accountable to his teammates and this program both on the ice, around campus and in the community.”

Sounds like he hasn't handled the suspension well or something like that. I feel like that would explain it turning into an "indefinite" suspension. It's an accountability thing, then I'm fine with it. It sucks that he's not going to be on the ice soon, but he is learning an important lesson.

My reading of it just says suspended from games indefinitely, but reinstated to practice.  conventional wisdom still holds Merrill is out of games until at least Christmas...

Also for anyone else paranoid about hockey defections that saw the word "club" in the OP and freaked out, despite knowing it didn't really signify anything, Merrill is back on the full varsity team, just not cleared for return to game action yet.

Oh and obviously, great news to hear he's practicing again.  Hopefully he can contribute to the team in games soon and stay out of further trouble.

Merrill was supposed to return for the first game of the Miami series, On November 11th the thirteenth game of the season including exhibitions.  (From MGoBlue http://www.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/100111aaa.html)

And the post by Spath dirctly says that he's still suspended indefinitely from game action, anyways.  I just wanted to make sure he didnt have inside info saying the 18th, because by Spath's best guess (and he's VERY well connected in the program, so I trust him) Merrill wont see game time until January and November 18th is way sooner than that and would be a big boost after two tough series.

I'm all giggity about 2011-2014

Hunwick
Sparks
Treais
Merrill
Hyman
Trouba
Nieves
Rutledge
PDG
Cianfrone
Compher
and other commits I don't know anything about

And those are just our superstars (and presumed future-superstars). 95% of college hockey would kill to have any 1 of those guys.

This is huge because Kevin Clare is one of our worst players. Being able replace him with one of the best players in college hockey will be huge. Not to mention the fact that he will be much fresher and healthier by sitting out the first half of the season.
