John U Bacon: potential NCAA reprimand for football, adding to Harbaugh's frustrations

Submitted by AndrelAnthonyCarter on January 5th, 2023 at 11:01 AM

Published on his blog this morning, copying some here since a hungry fanbase crashed his website:

Sources have told me Harbaugh is fed up with the NCAA, and all the hassles that go with coaching college football vs. the NFL – something just about every coach would understand. The NCAA is famous for punishing misdemeanors while ignoring felonies. As Jerry Tarkanian famously said, “The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky that they’re going to give Cleveland State another year of probation.”

Another unknown factor: Harbaugh and/or his staff will likely receive some form of reprimand from the NCAA, for what I’ve heard is a relatively minor recruiting infraction from two years ago. What exactly the infraction is, what the NCAA’s response might be – with the NCAA, it is impossible to predict — and how Harbaugh and Manuel will react to the NCAA’s conclusions aren’t yet known. U-M insiders believe the NCAA will be announcing what the infraction is and what the penalty will be, if any, within the next few weeks.

Actually I would be totally cool with Harbaugh going to the NFL if he went full scorch earth on his way out and told everyone every shady thing he has seen during his time coaching in college

If this is related to a prospect and their family stopping by Pizza Bob’s for a milkshake after touring Central Campus on their walk back to Schembechler Hall - and a “fan” (or coach \ booster) - picking up the tab, I won’t be happy.

Meanwhile, at Arizona basketball, with egregious violations caught on tape..... "nothing to see here".

And before anybody tells me the rules changed and players can get paid now - it still can't be orchestrated by the head coach and still can't blatantly pay them just for coming to a specific school.

1. Fuck the NCAA. Honestly cant wait for the day when it is abolished.

2. So Harbaugh is just going to bail and leave this mess for someone else to deal with?

3. As others have mentioned, the NCAA should be reprimanding the head officials. The game has turned into a god damn joke because of the refs. What even is a target? What is a catch? It's 2023 FFS and they still cant get it right - even with reviews.

Blue Collar, I’m not sure what the process for assigning officials is for NCAA championships.

However, the core issue may stem from this - conferences, not the NCAA - are responsible for officials during league / conference play.  And, I would guess that the home team is responsible for securing the officials for OOC games.

Perhaps the NCAA can “take the lead” on the various issues associated with officiating.

this is why I scoff at the notion that the way to fix Harbaugh to the NFL rumors is for Warde to cut a bigger check. that has nothing to do with any of this. the idea that more money is what will appease harbaugh is completely off base.

Of course it would be some minor NCAA reprimand that breaks the camel's back and pushes Harbaugh over the edge.

College football needs to separate itself from the NCAA.

Sources are telling me that John U Bacon is reaching, trying to maintain his reputation of being in the know....  and since others are releasing 'anonymously sourced' info, he has to publish something too.

next will be "the lack of water pressure in the drinking fountains in Schembechler Hall was the final straw for Jim Harbaugh".

Sources have told me that JUB is not any closer to Harbaugh than any other person who is not a Harbaugh family member or his agent. (/s)

This will play out by the end of January, most probably with a nice new UM contract being offered to Coach that he a) hopefully accepts and b) sees as properly valuing him relative to his coaching peers in CFB.

That's my guess and I'm sticking to it.

This will most likely play out with Harbaugh taking the Colts job. They have a top five pick. Perfect to select a QB. They already have a strong defense and a great running back. Two ingredients for a Harbaugh team. Irsay is desperate for a winner and will give Harbaugh a lot of control.

Warde will probably try to promote Moore, but boosters may push for an established coach.

Either way this gets done by the second signing period.

Salvatore - I just don't see that being very likely at this point. He's probably staying and, probably, getting a nice set of monetary upgrades to bring him inline with his performance the past two seasons.

Edit/add: he was jerked around in a pretty demeaning way a few years back, then he crushed it with back to back bucknuts victories and B1G trophies. It's now time to "pay the man".

What does the NCAA do?   Yes, they conduct March Madness and championships for other (for the most part) non-revenue generating sports.

North Carolina offers a curriculum of classes that are designed for athletes - with no criteria - and the players themselves deride.  Oh, that’s outside of our area of responsibility.

Sports apparel companies offer players and coaches hundreds of thousands of dollars, prior to NIL, and the NCAA does nothing.

A player posts on social media and admits to being coached by a member of the school’s staff during a quiet period, and the NCAA does nothing.

A team wants to conduct summer camps for middle / high school players across the country.  And, the NCAA prohibits it - because some coaches in the SEC / ACC would rather be fishing on their lake instead of engaging with talented prospects.

I’m very interested In their findings.

Juice, I will be interested in what the NCAA says.  The article references a reprimand.  I think Harbaugh takes pride in doing the right things - the right way.

And, while the NCAA does nothing against programs who “bend and break rules” in a significant way - they’ll call out Michigan for something that certainly sounds very minor in comparison.

Did Harbs realize he was fed up with the NCAA before he said his NFL interest wouldn't be an annual thing and he was set here, or after? Asking for a friend.

This is just a thought so I cant speak for Harbaugh himself....however the frustration JH is going through is very similar to the reason Beilein left ultimately left Michigan.  We always complain about Bagmen here, trouble with admissions, being late or nonexistant in NIL...ect ect ect. The deck has been stacked against Michigan being elite because of their unwillingness to adapt or participate in some of the "shady" practices that benefit many major programs out there.

I think Beilein did a masterful job but knew he would always be chasing other programs despite his success. It really frustrated him. Harbaugh is very similar in that regard, and with the changing NIL landscape, he has probably lost a lot more recruits then we even know about and the frustration has set in. Harbaugh on a level playing field would absolutely win us several national championships, I just think he is tired of playing games and wants to just coach.

If the AD doesn't tell the NCAA to go fuck themselves then I'll be beyond pissed. With all the shit that goes down in the SEC, there's no fucking way we should even remotely respect a damn thing the NCAA says.

I know with Harbs that if he was drained after playing hoops against big brother John and had lost best 3 of 5, he'd ask for best 4 out of 7, then 5 out of 9 and so on. Personally, this sounds like BS that I'd just nod my head and say "sorry, won't happen again" and be on with it and get back to coaching. I know this isn't Harbs' style but at age 59 you have to put up with some BS and move along. Easier when you are younger to want to fight the BS. Pick your battles. If this has something to do with COVID time and recruiting, what a friggin farce! AL Washington is spotted with players at Ohio during what was supposed to be a non contact time and nothing ever happened.

I'm going to post here, but not make it a new thread until I get one more confirmation.

Blake Corum is coming back!!!

One of my close sources who is related to the Ufer family just texted me this. Apparently, some donor is fronting some money for him.

After the run Michigan has been on they should be coming off back to back top 5 classes and repairing for a a Big10 dynasty. Instead we deal with this nonsense and old people not accepting NIL is a thing.

Honestly once NIL happened I thought Michigan was about to turn into Alabama it could now just buy championships but I forgot people existed.
