In regards to the play that could have gone either way (Granted, yes, there were a few of them but I think you know which one I'm talking about), I respect Klatt's opinion about it not being a catch. I can see where he's coming from. However, the call on the field is correct and it is a touchdown. I honestly don't understand why people hate on him for that. He'll have a different opinion and viewpoint on things, it will happen. He's still a good unbiased color analyst.
November 27th, 2023 at 11:36 AM ^
He is usually very favorable toward Michigan, so it was a bit surprising that even besides that play he was not as favorable toward Michigan yesterday. That could just be a product of the fact that this is the only team this year who's matched up with Michigan on both sides like that. It's probably a lot easier to be favorable to Michigan when you're watching them against Purdue lol
November 27th, 2023 at 11:39 AM ^
I think he way overcompensated for the accusations (from whom, exactly, I don't know) that he has a Michigan bias. He was comically supportive of OSU in the booth Saturday
November 27th, 2023 at 11:50 AM ^
I did not appreciate Gus Johnson referring to OSU as The World Famous Ohio State. His calling Maserati Marvin Harrison Jr was also very biased. I didn't notice Gus giving any Michigan players any special names, or maybe I missed them.
Definitely Michigan vs everybody.
November 27th, 2023 at 11:55 AM ^
I've heard that Gus is actually a huge Michigan homer so he was doing the same thing as Klatt - trying to make seem like he isn't. He was certainly very obnoxious about it on Saturday.
November 27th, 2023 at 12:04 PM ^
Griese (the younger) used to do that when he called our games. Annoyed the crap out of me.
November 27th, 2023 at 12:12 PM ^
And Drew Sharp was the worst for it.
November 27th, 2023 at 12:29 PM ^
Gus has a dog named Bo. And yes, there reportedly is a connection…
November 27th, 2023 at 12:01 PM ^
He calls Corum “Blake the Great” and Edwards “The Don.”
November 27th, 2023 at 12:01 PM ^
Nah, Gus is the one who coined the nicknames Blake The Great and The Don, and also gave us OH-JA-BO!!! During the 2021 game broadcast it felt like Gus was the biggest Michigan fan on the planet
It's just that his OSU nicknames are way more annoying
November 27th, 2023 at 12:39 PM ^
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Gus after he called the UofM/IU basketball game a few years back. Dude is a graduate of UofD high school and was very enthusiastic chatting about Michigan. If he was being unprofessionally honest, I’m sure he’d favor Michigan. Though it would be hilarious if he decided to lean into that during broadcast and be like, “and here comes Coach Third Base arguing with the refs again…”
November 27th, 2023 at 1:53 PM ^
Gus Johnson is insufferable.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:43 PM ^
Couldn't believe the World Famous crap and Maserati Marv...He did say BLAKE THE GREAT!
November 27th, 2023 at 11:57 PM ^
He definitely dropped “Blake the Great” at least once during the game, and he’s the one that dubbed Edwards “The Don”, and gave us “O-JA-BO!!!”. Also created “Chuck Sizzle”. The guy loves get overexcited and making nicknames.
November 28th, 2023 at 12:06 AM ^
You missed them. Gus calls Corum "Blake the Great" and Edwards "The Don" regularly and did so during the game, though not as much as the OSU names. It's his schtick and nothing new.
November 27th, 2023 at 11:47 AM ^
He sounded fine and normal to me.
Obviously a tough, tense game will have a different tone and perception than a blowout.
November 27th, 2023 at 11:52 AM ^
He leaned OSU on every questionable call. There was a clear OSU bias in the broadcast booth. It is not a big deal. Part of it just comes with the change in roles between Michigan and OSU. Michigan is expected to win now and broadcasters have a natural tendency to prop up the underdog.
November 27th, 2023 at 12:00 PM ^
Tbf we did get about every questionable call. Sounds natural.
November 27th, 2023 at 1:43 PM ^
Defensive holding on Mason Graham was beyond absurd and the random hands to the face giving them a 1st down that led to a touchdown was not us getting every questionable call.
November 27th, 2023 at 12:31 PM ^
After you hear his comments about the Zinter injury you will forgive him for any perceived bias.
Note the OP's comments about the time during the segment if you don't want to watch the whole vid.
November 27th, 2023 at 11:39 AM ^
i had posted about Klatt questioning the call earlier and I think there's a difference between questioning the call on the broadcast vs. implying on his recap that he doesn't think it was a TD, even though it was ruled a TD on the field.
To me, it's not a 50/50 play, it's a 90/10 play where you have to literally think RW was effectively bobbling a ball for 10 yards, while somehow also having enough control that Burke had to violently rip it out of his hands to get an interception.
It's just such a mental gymnastics stance, which is why it's so weird he's doubling down on it. I'm not mad, just confused.
November 27th, 2023 at 11:49 AM ^
Even if it was bobbled, it was controlled at the point he broke the plane and put a knee down. At best you could call it a bobble until they hit the ground, which then would be a 50/50 ball, which goes to the offense.
Ultimately, they’d have to be crazy to overturn it and call it an interception and delete a Roman Wilson touchdown in a huge game-shit wait they totally would do that.
November 27th, 2023 at 2:01 PM ^
Your first sentence isn't completely correct because Wilson has to establish himself as a runner prior to falling down. The replay looked at possession, which was kinda iffy since he didn't have it tucked away, and making a football move. Lets say Wilson bobbles it a step further than he did and only takes one step and starts to fall as he crosses plance, that's not an instant TD and sooo many people are not including this into their opinions on the call. I think they got it right but it was a close call that absolutely needed to be reviewed.
November 27th, 2023 at 12:40 PM ^
I mute the TV and listen to Karsch and Jansen
November 27th, 2023 at 11:44 AM ^
He was not good and unbiased on Saturday.
November 27th, 2023 at 11:47 AM ^
He stated the defensive hold on Mason Graham was a “good call” which was absurd. He was terrible all game.
November 27th, 2023 at 11:57 AM ^
Yeah, that flag was my only wtf moment from the game.
That call was right up there with the Corum block flag from the other week.
November 27th, 2023 at 12:17 PM ^
Not giving us the TD on the first goal line review was ridiculous to me, too. He clearly broke the plane with the ball on his chest
November 27th, 2023 at 12:16 PM ^
Yes, that was probably the worst of the whole game. Like how could you look at that replay and say in good faith that the correct call was made?
It felt like Klatt made up his mind before the game that he was going to go full OSU homer for some reason
November 27th, 2023 at 11:51 AM ^
"They got fortunate with that call being what it was on the field and not being able to overturn it. I did not think he had control of the ball to become a runner."
You're probably right that we're being overly sensitive, but that comment from Klatt came after he had already spent the entire review trying very hard to make the case that it was an interception. The totality of his commentary, to me, sounded like he did not think it was close--that it was a clear interception.
And yet, he did not begin to really question if it was a TD until he saw the second replay, meaning that live he also assumed it was a TD. So why would he be so surprised sounding by the result?
Eh whatever. I'm sure I haven't changed your mind, but it sounded like OSU wishful thinking and that's why we're mad about it.
November 27th, 2023 at 12:18 PM ^
Yup, he had a narrative in his head going into the game
November 27th, 2023 at 12:10 PM ^
For all of the complaining on all sides, I generally find the calls of the top network broadcasting teams pretty fair. Nicknames are nicknames and that's one of Gus Johnson's calling cards, and he has them for lots of the big time players. And I find Klatt to be one of the better color guys, though they ESPN and NBC guys are good too. I may be in the minority, however....
November 27th, 2023 at 12:22 PM ^
You can tell those who've never watched Johnson/Klatt do other games. This is their shtick and I find it pretty entertaining in games that aren't particularly competitive.
Games like this I have the sound down a bit because I don't need those two to make it entertaining.
November 27th, 2023 at 12:25 PM ^
I think that Klatt is typically pretty good and unbiased (maybe even leans towards Michigan) but my girlfriend asked me at least three or four times during the game, "Who is this guy and why is he cheering for Ohio State". It was pretty unmistakable during the game.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:42 PM ^
i like your girlfriend
she gets it
November 27th, 2023 at 12:32 PM ^
Just like the spot, I think this play is a rorschach test for your fandom. I think a lot of people see what they want to be true.
November 27th, 2023 at 12:48 PM ^
Did he say anything about the late OSU catch and fumble? Because if that was a catch, then Wilson's clearly was a TD. Wilson had at least one more step than the OSU receiver before he lost the ball (three to two I think)...
November 27th, 2023 at 4:17 PM ^
Clear possession across the goal in the end zone. Not close he is being questioned for his dumb questioning because he should know the rules in that, not because of bias.
November 27th, 2023 at 9:10 PM ^
Klatt's a real one, he just says what he thinks. I disagreed with him on this one, and I don't think it's because of my bias, but whatever.
I'll take Gus and Joel every game, it's so much better than that God awful CBS crew.
November 27th, 2023 at 11:20 AM ^
Was in the stadium. The vibes were immaculate, especially after the way the team responded after Zak going down.
Klatt is 100% correct about how the stadium energy is different these days than last decade.
Kinda wild that it's on the 10-year anniversary of the Devin 2-point game.
November 27th, 2023 at 11:31 AM ^
Amazing what winning three straight Big Ten titles will do for in-stadium atmosphere, no? :-)
November 27th, 2023 at 11:32 AM ^
I really think the luxury box towers changed things for the better and the noise gets reflected back in a bit more.
November 27th, 2023 at 11:32 AM ^
Hearing the crowd cheering “let’s go Zak” was pretty moving.
Then to see Blake bust one on the very next play. Wow.
November 27th, 2023 at 12:37 PM ^
From my seat (19), when it first started up it sounded like it came from the OSU section in the SE corner. Which would be fine.
November 27th, 2023 at 11:35 AM ^
He makes a great point about how the nervous energy of the crowd would seemingly bleed into the team on the field. How many times did we see a guy drop an interception, or miss a fumble recovery, or our QB throw a pick, or guys miss an open field tackle, etc. etc. and the team would just deflate. Years ago, if Ohio State tied the game late in the 3rd at 17 or Zinter goes down, you could imagine how the crowd and the team could instantly wilt. But not anymore! And it's fucking beautiful now the trust that exists between fans and the team to ultimately pull it out.
November 27th, 2023 at 11:44 AM ^
Michigan fans have become Mr. Brightside. its weird.
I've been going to games for 40 years, its a much younger crowd as well. Not one "down in front" on Saturday.
November 27th, 2023 at 11:48 AM ^
"Michigan fans have become Mr. Brightside."
We're at home trying to sleep while our wife/girlfriend is out with another man? ;-)
November 27th, 2023 at 12:29 PM ^
Well it sounds like all our rivals our basically sleeping together, so yes.
