Joel Klatt recap of The Game

Solid recap as always - but his recounting of the crowd's reaction to Zak Zinter's injury (starts ~ 32:00 in) is very compelling and is someone cutting onions in here?

In regards to the play that could have gone either way (Granted, yes, there were a few of them but I think you know which one I'm talking about), I respect Klatt's opinion about it not being a catch. I can see where he's coming from. However, the call on the field is correct and it is a touchdown. I honestly don't understand why people hate on him for that. He'll have a different opinion and viewpoint on things, it will happen. He's still a good unbiased color analyst.

He is usually very favorable toward Michigan, so it was a bit surprising that even besides that play he was not as favorable toward Michigan yesterday. That could just be a product of the fact that this is the only team this year who's matched up with Michigan on both sides like that.  It's probably a lot easier to be favorable to Michigan when you're watching them against Purdue lol

I did not appreciate Gus Johnson referring to OSU as The World Famous Ohio State. His calling Maserati Marvin Harrison Jr was also very biased. I didn't notice Gus giving any Michigan players any special names, or maybe I missed them.

Definitely Michigan vs everybody.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Gus after he called the UofM/IU basketball game a few years back. Dude is a graduate of UofD high school and was very enthusiastic chatting about Michigan. If he was being unprofessionally honest, I’m sure he’d favor Michigan. Though it would be hilarious if he decided to lean into that during broadcast and be like, “and here comes Coach Third Base arguing with the refs again…”

He leaned OSU on every questionable call.   There was a clear OSU bias in the broadcast booth.  It is not a big deal.  Part of it just comes with the change in roles between Michigan and OSU.  Michigan is expected to win now and broadcasters have a natural tendency to prop up the underdog.

i had posted about Klatt questioning the call earlier and I think there's a difference between questioning the call on the broadcast vs. implying on his recap that he doesn't think it was a TD, even though it was ruled a TD on the field.

To me, it's not a 50/50 play, it's a 90/10 play where you have to literally think RW was effectively bobbling a ball for 10 yards, while somehow also having enough control that Burke had to violently rip it out of his hands to get an interception.

It's just such a mental gymnastics stance, which is why it's so weird he's doubling down on it. I'm not mad, just confused.

Even if it was bobbled, it was controlled at the point he broke the plane and put a knee down. At best you could call it a bobble until they hit the ground, which then would be a 50/50 ball, which goes to the offense.

Ultimately, they’d have to be crazy to overturn it and call it an interception and delete a Roman Wilson touchdown in a huge game-shit wait they totally would do that.

Your first sentence isn't completely correct because Wilson has to establish himself as a runner prior to falling down.  The replay looked at possession, which was kinda iffy since he didn't have it tucked away, and making a football move.  Lets say Wilson bobbles it a step further than he did and only takes one step and starts to fall as he crosses plance, that's not an instant TD and sooo many people are not including this into their opinions on the call.  I think they got it right but it was a close call that absolutely needed to be reviewed.

"They got fortunate with that call being what it was on the field and not being able to overturn it. I did not think he had control of the ball to become a runner."

You're probably right that we're being overly sensitive, but that comment from Klatt came after he had already spent the entire review trying very hard to make the case that it was an interception. The totality of his commentary, to me, sounded like he did not think it was close--that it was a clear interception.

And yet, he did not begin to really question if it was a TD until he saw the second replay, meaning that live he also assumed it was a TD. So why would he be so surprised sounding by the result?

Eh whatever. I'm sure I haven't changed your mind, but it sounded like OSU wishful thinking and that's why we're mad about it.

For all of the complaining on all sides, I generally find the calls of the top network broadcasting teams pretty fair.  Nicknames are nicknames and that's one of Gus Johnson's calling cards, and he has them for lots of the big time players.  And I find Klatt to be one of the better color guys, though they ESPN and NBC guys are good too.  I may be in the minority, however....

Was in the stadium. The vibes were immaculate, especially after the way the team responded after Zak going down.

Klatt is 100% correct about how the stadium energy is different these days than last decade.

Kinda wild that it's on the 10-year anniversary of the Devin 2-point game.

He makes a great point about how the nervous energy of the crowd would seemingly bleed into the team on the field.  How many times did we see a guy drop an interception, or miss a fumble recovery, or our QB throw a pick, or guys miss an open field tackle, etc. etc. and the team would just deflate.  Years ago, if Ohio State tied the game late in the 3rd at 17 or Zinter goes down, you could imagine how the crowd and the team could instantly wilt.  But not anymore!  And it's fucking beautiful now the trust that exists between fans and the team to ultimately pull it out.
