Jim Harbaugh swipes at NCAA rulemakers

Submitted by UMProud on

"On Thursday, Harbaugh went on "The Michigan Insider" radio show on WTKA-1050 AM in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and discussed his satellite camp appearances, calling them "collegial gestures" with "allies." He also said he wouldn't be surprised if the rule passed even though it's "dumb."

“The camps, in terms of allies, we're doing camps again, very collegial gestures working together in a spirit of coaching football again with South Florida, with Baylor this year, with Iowa State,” Harbaugh said, via The Detroit News. “We do have allies and we'll continue that effort ... there's a lot of rules that have been made that aren't the best rules. You can't say that you could put that past rule makers to make another dumb rule.”

Harbaugh was also asked about the NCAA possibly banning football teams from traveling for practice, like he did this spring when he took Michigan to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. He noted that other sports don't have those same limitations and it would be unfair to single out football."

Crazy Jim is freakin Cry Baby. He seems upset that he is not allowed to cheat. He will learn that he will not get away with cheating, and without being able to cheat, he will not win. My guess is in about 2-3 years he will hold a press conference to say how much he loves UM and that is been an honor bla, bla, bla BUT, in the best interest of his family and with much thought he is going to be the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jags. This is almost certain, he is over promising and will certainly under deliver. I think the humiliation that Urban Meyer laid on him by smashing UM like a bug under his shoe is the first in many things to come that will show that crazy Jim is all talk, no substance. UM is certain to lost to MSU and OSU in the coming season, which means that it will be another year of failure. Failure is the only thing UM football does well.

“It would be hard for me to envision that people, rule makers would deprive football players only of going on trips when you don't take that away from the golf team or the swim team or the wrestling team or the track team, softball, baseball, name a sport, basketball, those student-athletes have the ability to do that,” Harbaugh said.

If somehow it did come to pass that a rule came about to ban these camps, then what Harbaugh pointed out here - a point discussed to death on the board really - is what makes any such rule blatant pandering to the contrived outrage of others and the validation of cartel-type behavior.

Dumb rules made by sellout idiots. Nothing wrecks college football quite like bad rules and terrible refs. Well from a personal standpoint truthfully when the filth like ohio and s sleezy c win is worse but whatever. Anyways, konichiwa bitches!

He expressed his opinion a while ago about possibly following the lead of Jim and he definitely took a dig at the SEC when he mentioned, "Doing something to level the playing field, " and he needn't say more. We all got it.  Although I think Urb shares in whatever perceived advantages the SEC has, coaching in what is now a top 6 producing school with the steady climb of GA, now producing even more than the state of OH. He also does as well as anyone in FL and is as welcome in  SEC land as any other coach. Add in Harbaugh and you have the top three coaches in our strongest division.

As the SEC has done, I have no idea why A.D.s and eventually Delay do not fight back if they really perceive an injustice. Merely talking about it as Dantonio is doing won't do a damn thing. I do realize the SEC is growing, with FL obviously having the largest population in that area, made up with a large percentage of retired BIG fans, toss in a decent sized number from NE, little more in MD and substantial gains in PA and NJ and suddenly the numbers look good for the BIG and although I don't think we necessarily  want to become the string pullers of the NCAA as the SEC does now, there is little doubt in my mind we - The BIG - could prevent inclusions of more "dumb" rules if the conference would actually take advantage of the power of unity and show a realization that the benefits of conference affiliation doesn't end with a guaranteed schedule.

As of right now, we've heard little from Gus, however, the power of the coach they named a rule  after to prevent recruiting advantages, joined by his commissioner, is calling the shots and it is working. I find this somewhat ironic and I know, although one dumb ass coach down there said, "If they want to see rules bent, we can do it, but we will do it better," they aren't caving into the SEC out of fear of expansion of already existing practices. They are screaming louder and although they haven't shown total unity with McElwain being new enough to the conference to still believe a sense of fair play is in order, having a commissioner come out and ask his golfing buddy from the NCAA to issue a statement basically agreeing with him is paying off.

With only one conference coach speaking out, even though 8 more may feel the  same isn't going to be enough.

This is the time that Delany needs to do a little behind the scenes coalition building and get all the B1G prgram on the same page then hit the Big 12, PAC and the northern members of the ACC (Pitt, Syacuse, Boston College) to vote against this.  We SHOULD have the numbers to prevent this.... this would be a very bad rule.
