Jatashun “Big Tex” Beachum leaves Arkansas program.

Submitted by MichiganNomad on

According to Collegefootballtalk.com, Jatashun "Big Tex" Beachum has left the Arkansas program. I'm not sure if this was posted on the board earlier but I know this guy was someone who considered Michigan before ultimately choosing Arkansas. He was a RB/DT prospect and looks like someone who would fit in with the new offense.

"Beachum and Simek’s departure means 10 players have left Arkansas’ program since the spring."

that is some serious attrition.

as for "big tex", i don't see this happening. generally, guys don't leave a big program for a big program, and i can't imagine that the coaching staff won't be able to find a FB with four full years of eligibility that doesn't have to sit out a year. also, if you are a 280 possible RB, sitting out a year after transfer is not going to make you a less than 280 pound RB.

I don't know what sitting out a year would do to his weight.  He doesn't have to be away from the team for a year, he just can't play in games.  Wherever he transfers he'll join up with the team immiediately for practices and S&C sessions, so you would expect him to be in the same shape as if he were eligible to play.

As for your comment about players going from big program to big programs, Arkansas knows first hand that this isn't true.  They got transfer Ryan Mallett from a really big, awesome program and they lost Mustain and that good receiver whose name escapes me to USC.  MSU just picked up a kid who transfered from Vandy.  It usually depends on why the kid is leaving, but it's very possible he goes to another big school.

year off was spent practicing and working out - good to know.

michigan has had a few other players leave for other large programs - justin fargas, jon ritchie, ryan mundy, justin boren, toney clemons - so you are right, it does happen and is possible, but not nearly as often as stepping down a notch, as in mcguffie, threet, vald emilien, forcier, lalota, oneill, witherspoon, etc.

holy crap that is a lot of names.

Yeah, when you transfer, you start practicing and working out with the team from day 1, you just can't play in the games.

Of the guys you mentioned who "stepped down a notch," I disagree with a few.  Threet went to ASU which is a major program.  They haven't had ton of success lately, but they went to numerous Rose Bowls in the 90s and are in a BCS conference.  LaLota and Witherspoon both went to Rutgers, also a BCS school and Spoon barely counts because he left for academic reasons.  Vlad, McGuffie and O'Niell were the true downgraders, but even Vlad (injury issues) and McGuffie (family issues) had extenuating circumstances involved.

I agree with you that's it's closer to 50-50, but that's not enough to assume Big Tex won't be coming here.  Now, I don't think he's coming here, but not for the reasons you suggest.  We just have a very good class going and only a few spots left.  I think the guys we have a shot at we'd prefer over Big Tex.

recent transfers are mostly due to coaching issues, i think.  if we go back a step further, which me might be able to consider "normal times" we can talk about guys like johnny sears, mister simpson, cobrani mixon, and jason forcier.

but, anyway, he is most likely not coming.

Yeah it is too late for this guy with us. Too bad, sounds like an interesting player. But why leave Arkansas? Beachum's idea or Arkansas' idea?

Sounds like he wasn't adapting well to DT in Petrino's system after switching from running back. I guess it's just wishful thinking, but this guy sounds like he fills two current needs: FB and DT. He already burned his redshirt, which is a shame, so that means he's likely JUCO bound if he wants to play immediately.

Hard to imagine him transferring here.  Also, the article really doesn't state why he's no longer with the team.  It could be academic problems too.  In that case, we definitely don't want him.

This is a bit off topic but since were talking about tranfers having to sit out a year I had a question pop up in my head. Is it possible if a transfer wanted to play without having to sit out a year that he could switch jerseys with a player that is elegible? How obvious would that be? I know its harder now with the cameras on you but was it ever tried before? Im not saying this is a good idea but with how shady some of these college programs are running it wouldnt suprise me. If two players had similar body types would it be really noticeable?

fullback.  Kid still had 4 years left.  wonder if Arky game him a release, if he'd still have to sit out, having redshirted last year.  Wonder if 10 players leaving Arky since Spring are part of cuts for SEC oversigning.  Last year when Barnett decommitted from Arky @ end, they had 3 TEs committed and 29 kids for 27 spots already.  Gotta wonder if they ran into exceeding the 85 limit.
