Jamal Crawford Wins NBA's Sixth Man Award

Submitted by turd ferguson on

The former Wolverine, and one of many to be screwed by NCAA, picked up a nice award today.  He's the fourth player ever to win the Sixth Man award twice, doing it after averaging 18.6 points per game for the Clippers this season.

If you're interested in a really nice profile on Crawford, the Seattle Times published this in November.  He seems like a great, likeable guy.

Congrats, Jamal.  Go Blue.

He would have been a total stud for Michigan if the NCAA hadn't forced him to go to the NBA.

It's great that the NCAA doesn't play those kinds of games with people's lives/careers any more.

In his sadly brief time in Ann Arbor, he was averaging about 17 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists per game, I believe, and had it not been for the NCAA, that would have been awesome to see for a couple years. Like LSA Aught One said, hard to believe he's been in the league going on 15 seasons now, but it is awesome to see him contributing like that. A list of candidates with Taj Gibson and Vince Carter on it is not a bad list either.

As a fun fact regarding the list of other two-time winners, Detlef Schrempf has been in a few episodes of "Parks And Recreation".

I don't remember all the details, but my memory is that growing up, a rich guy in his hometown (Seattle IIRC) effectively adopted Crawford to help keep him in the classroom and off the streets.  The rich guy had no or an extremely tenuous connection to Michigan.  When Crawford graduated high school, he got him a car of some nature as a graduation present.  Crawford goes to Michigan, plays like 8 or 10 games, and the NCAA decides that kindly rich old guy was actually a secret Michigan booster, and they suspended Crawford, and required that he pay back kindly rich old guy for the "inappropriate gifts" if he wanted to be reinstated in future seasons.  Which, obviously, is basically impossible, so they effectively forced him to be one and done.  One of the true injustices that the NCAA's stupid rules have created.

BTW, anyone who remembers the salient details better than I, please feel free to correct me.

The 1st suspension was not as clean as you're remembering. Barry Henthorn has loaning money to Crawford through his charity group, allegedly up to 25 thousand dollars. There were also multiple cars, clothes, and jewlery.

He came back from that. Then there was a second suspension.

When he was in high school he filed paperwork with the NBA to declare for the draft, but withdrew his name. The problem was he had already signed a LOI to Michigan, so he got a second suspension for 8 games to end the season.

He could have came back but decided not to.

Every time I see him play, I wonder if I should consider him a Michigan Man. He was here for such a short period and, to be frank, he should never have been recruited. Ellerbe was clueless and desperate. I dont mean to slight Crawfrd personally, but his sutuation at the time screamed DO NOT TOUCH. As I recall, Tark was the only other coach recruiting him. No legit UM coach would have let him on the squad. Still... he WAS here or a short time, played well, didnt disrespect himself. So-- Michigan Man or not?

I was a student during the Crawford games. After watching him light it up during our first preseason game, I wore a buddy's headband to the second one (since Crawford wore one and he was clearly going to be a stud -- his pull-up j was just as nasty back then). A group of guys that were sitting near me noticed and all wore headbands to the next home game. After that, a few more people would wear headbands each game. Crawford was a big fan favorite, and I was kinda proud to have started something, but then the NCAA suspended Crawford for some bullshit and it was over. I still remember how deflating that was -- that's what really sent the program into a tailspin. The next season someone started the Maize Rage, and I like to think the headband thing was an inspiration for that. So, I guess my point is, cool story, huh?
