I wouldn't say what he did is necessarily illegal. He has a right to quote material because of the fair use doctrine in copyright. The legality of the post would depend on how much of the article he copied and pasted. Further, if he is a rivals member, he probably agreed to a contract that he would not use the copyrighted material on other sites. It is debatable whether he can sign away his right to fair use in a contract. There is legal support for the idea that he cannot contract out of his right to do this. From what I know of the facts, I would say this probably went to far, and that he should summarize the information. Rivals can't copyright the facts behind the article, so he is free to do this. However, I would be hesitant to call any use of a rivals article illegal. People have a lot more rights on these issues than content providers want you to think.

Ummm, the article appears to be free. Granted I didn't see what was there prior to it being changed. But is it really illegal to copy and paste a free article? It might be a waste of space when you could just click and read yourself, but it's not like it was premium $$$$.

It is illegal to copy paste any article, even if free. Think copyright. The AP (Associated Press) has expressed a wish to crack down on this. Fair Use does apply - you can reproduce ~10-25% of an article with proper attribution.

A. Is it normal to be this solid on a recruitment? Specifically, did recruits who decommitted last year ever say things this solid? B. It appears Ohio State played games with his offer and it upset him. What would be the advantages to Ohio State to have this type of strategy? Were they trying to decide whether to offer or not or do they like to strategically time there offers in a way different than Michigan?

I do remember Kevin Newsome talking about how him and Bryce McNeal became good friends and how they were talking about playing together at M and going up against the likes of Randell Carol. At that time it sounded pretty strong. Also, there was Shavodrick Beaver....

If it is illegal to copy and paste some content from elsewhere...or to link to it...well then damn...just eliminate the forum section here... but then again, Brian would probably agree that the benefits of getting more traffic over here add$ up, and would surely outweigh a small copy and paste every now and then. To the OP..thanks for the quote.

A link alone is always fine. A link + cut and paste of 10-25% of article is fine because of the Fair Use Doctrine. A cut and paste of more than 25% (approximately) of an article is copyright infringement. Cutting and pasting an entire article is definitely not allowed.

I love how we need reassurance about a guy who literally committed yesterday. We are like the worst kind of paranoid girlfriends. "Do you love me? Are you SURE? ... What about now? Do you still love me now?"

They are the most insecure women ever!!!!!!!! Everything is predicated on their looks and they pretty much know it. That's why they hate on women wearing the same dress and has a similiar (sp?) hairstyle. But, that is way off topic. Fwiw, Sam talked about this on the recruiting roundup. He said that as Jerald Robinson was talking with RR that is when OSU called to offer the kid. And that they wanted to know if he commited or not. It does sound like RR is starting to get under those boys skin a little bit now.

Anyone else see "7 picks"? I wasn't real impressed with his speed from the films, but he might make one helluva safety with hands like that. And 30 lbs.

Is it just me or did we just finish a recruiting cycle in which all three DT's decommitted at one point or another (and two ended up elsewhere), we lost two very good QB's, and Bryce McNeal committed to Clemson? You're right. We shouldn't be worried about decommits. It's not like we have two former backup FB's competing for time at DT and can barely field a two-deep at LB...

There are few posters I respect here like I do you. You always seem to make informed posts. Posts where you weigh all the evidence and then give your informed opinion. With that said, I don't think that you are taking into consideration the circumstances that led to all those decommits. TomVH told us that RR was pressuring guys by threatening to take away schollies if kids didn't commit early. Most of the decommits we had came from this sort of recruiting. Now as the recruiting process went on, RR became comfortable in his skin at UofM he stopped using those tactics and just started recruiting. This isn't to say that kids still aren't going to decommit from us but it does give some insight as to why it seemed to be an exodus in mass from the class. Hell, even Big Will had to be re-recruited because his recruitment came from the old regime not RR's. I am not saying that we shouldn't have reservations with any kid that commits now. But let's at least temper it with knowing that none of the kids now are being pressured to commit early, they just are.

First of all, thanks for the compliment. I do remember Tom saying that, and I usually trust his opinion. However, my point is that when you come off a recruiting cycle in which you lost approximately 25% of the guys who committed to you (22 commits plus 6 or 7 decommits, if I remember correctly), then I'd say there's fair reason to suspect that some of these kids might defect. Decommitments are fairly common - for multiple reasons - and I don't think it's out of line to think that we might lose one of these three receivers, whether they were pressured into committing or not. Personally, I never trust a commitment until they sign their LOI. That being said, I'm not going to fret about people decommitting, because for the most part, we're able to replace those who left. But like I said, paranoia is natural at this point.

Both were kids from non-traditional M areas. One of the kids committed without ever having been on campus. Both were clearly "still looking." While there is no guarantee that these three stick - given their strong feelings at this point (and ties Ricardo and JJ) I do not expect these to decommit. There was no reason for Robinson to commit this early if he wasnt sold on being in blue. Anything can happen, but I would be surprised at a decommit from any of them.
