Is it time to extend Harbaugh's contract?

Submitted by Northville on November 30th, 2019 at 7:15 PM

He's got two years left. To avoid a "dead man walking" situation on the recruiting trail, the time to recommit to him is now, no?

We're all too familiar with the record vs. OSU, bowl games, ranked opponents on the road, no B10 titles, etc. but he DID destroy ND and (a quickly disintegrating) MSU this year. There are some decent young recruits and players in the pipeline. Is UM on the march to national greatness we all hoped for? Just maybe a bit slower march than anticipated? Or is it more of an endless slog to a ceiling... one that's just not high enough.

Do you extend him? Because that seems to be the question the program is facing. I'm a bit torn. There just seems to be no progress vs. OSU in five years. I'm torn. What would you do?

I mean, it's like, what, 15 out of 16 now?

Is everybody shellshocked? I'm not. OSU went about its business of beating UM and moving onward and upward. And the business of Harbaugh's future is very much directly related to what transpired.

Does UM double down on this regime? Or not? Pretty simple. If it's "too soon" maybe just don't answer.

I don’t see how we could do better than Harbaugh. OSU is going to remain a top 5 program for at the very least a few more years and likely more. We are asking Harbaugh to beat the very best team in college football. It’s an extremely tall order. You think anyone else it up for it ?

I say extend Harbaugh and brainstorm how we can use the incoming new rules to get money to recruits legally, if we continue to refuse to bag.

I agree.  Extend him 5 years.  We arent going to get anyone better.  It sucks losing to OSU, but they wont stay on top forever.  Stay the course, win 10 games a season, turn east Lansing into a crater, pass Penn State and figure out how to get competitive against OSU.

Here, here.  OSU is just on that elite level and we are good not great.  Stay the course, do what you can to get more Dax hill types.

Upset, yep, pissed , yep, but I’m not even close to wanting to change course. Those b holes are just insanely good.

fart noise. onto basketball... but i really hope the team buys into the bowl game. Can provide momentum and decrease the doom and gloom just a bit in the long offseason.

Yes. We need to hit on our D-line recruits at a high level. In 2016 and 17 we were far lass talented offensively than we’ve been the last two years but we were right there to win both those games because of our DL. We don’t have players line R Glasgow, Hurst, Wormley, Taco, Gary, and Chase. That showed today. Fields had a ton of time, and Dobbins was getting 7-8 yds before being touched all day

LOL

FUCK NO!

I'd rather not commit the program to a solid decade + of being raped by Ohio State every season. At a certain point, his pitiful record against top quality opponents and in bowl games is going to be a negative on the recruiting trail...as if it wasn't already.

For recruiting purposes, yes.

Outside of that meh. Michigan lost to the 3 best teams on its schedule again like 2018 and 2017.

That seems to be good enough for Warde n co.

Michigan losing to OSU isn't unique to Harbaugh... Michigan has been on the upswing with multiple 9+ wins under Harbaugh.  You risk that not keeping Harbaugh, but to be honest he might want to move on from the silliness which is college football.

I'd extend his contract in a heart beat.

Absolutely. He's doing a great job, and he's a great man for training these young men. They'll get over the hump eventually, but there's no one else who could do better--or even as well--as he's been doing at Michigan.

If he stays, so be it. Wouldn’t be mad if he somehow got an NFL job or was not renewed, however. At this point, there are better, you get, hungrier coaches out there IMO.

Extend Harbaugh

Replace Brown with Venables or any other elite d-coordinator by paying him double whatever he is making

Start "competing" on the recruiting trail.  Whatever the elite teams are doing and paying, match it.

Tressel was an upgrade from Cooper. Ryan Day is filling in for Urban. Juwan seems to have taken over for Beilein nicely so far. Im not saying fire him for the sake of firing him but I feel like a lot of coaches can win 9 games at Michigan and beat indiana, a down msu team etc.

Sure Hoke was worse, but there are a lot of coaches who could almost beat PSU, while getting blown out by OSU and Wisconsin, given this level of talent.

I'm not a "Harbaugh has to go" type of guy, but at this point I don't really care if he stays.

Have to extend him, but it certainly seems like just giving in to losing 2-4 games per year and not beating OSU. That’s the record, that’s the trend, and that’s reality. As much as I hate it, no one else is coming in here to do any better. Harbaugh has proven he will adapt - I sincerely hope he does the same on the recruiting trail. That’s the biggest issue he’s facing.

Add my vote for extending.  Today was brutal.  But I think Harbaugh is building.  The offense looked like it could score at any time.  Today it just . . . didin't.  I think we need someone more efficient than Patterson to run the QB position.  Ole Miss guys told us he was feast or famine, so we knew what we were getting.  But he has been the best for the job this year, and we just have to deal with that.

Don Brown dismantles every other offense.  His adjustments this year were impressive.  Unfortunately OSU this year has been looking more lethal even than usual since day one this season.  It just wasn't going to happen today.  Yes, Michigan shot themselves in the foot too, but I think a lot of that is because they knew they were overmatched and were trying to push.  Mistakes happen that way.
