Impact of Virginia Tech's QB decision?

Submitted by littlebrownjug on
I just saw on www.espn.com that Frank Beamer wants to redshirt Tyrod Taylor this year to give him more time to develop. What implications do you think that this might have on the recruitment of Kevin Newsome?

I saw someone on the Rivals board ask about the "what if" possibility of Tyrod Taylor transferring to Michigan, and I thought it was just delusional "why doesn't everyone want to play for Michigan" fanboyism.

I think the conventional wisdom has always been the Newsome's eventual decision would hinge on how much Taylor emerged as the real deal at Va Tech. Even when he was verbally comitted to UM, I figured VT was still not out of it.......especially if Taylor stunk up the joint this season in Blacksburg. The fact that he's redshirting makes you wonder if he'll develop at all into a good QB.  As long as Taylor does not own the VT QB position, Newsome will probably stay in state. With today's redshirt decision, I think its just as likely that Newsome could start next season for VT as it was when we all hoped he could start for us.

not saying that Newsome would want to sit behind a guy for three years, but maybe he doesn't want to be the #1 QB his freshman year.  he may want some time to develop his passing game.

Football players who decommit  publicly very, very rarely return to the same school.  Newsome is gone for good.  Let's not turn this into the same delusion we had that Les Miles was going to somehow end up as our coach after he signed an extension with LSU.

Taylor is exciting to watch on the field, unlike Glennon.  When Taylor touches the ball, the crowd holds their breath, mostly in a good way.

Glennon seems like a place-holder type (a la Navarre).  I can't see them reaching, much less winning, a major bowl with him and their thin receiving corps.

I wonder what happened in practice to demote Taylor.

As I stated last week, I would not be surprised if Newsome ends up at UNC.

1) Tyrod Taylor was also a highly touted dual threat QB that was good enough to actually see playing time last year as a true freshman.  If he stays redshirted this year, he would have 3 years of elegibility left.

2) His 3 years of elegibility means there is a chance that Newsome might have to sit for 3 years before he gets his shot.  Not saying it will happen, but there is a chance

3) UNC is only a few hours from his home and would make it easier on his family to see him play on a regular basis.

4) Butch Davis is a great recruiter with the NFL experience and Offense that Newsome desires.

As I stated last week, I have no hard facts, but just a hunch that Newsome may go to UNC.  All-in-all, I will be more surprised if Newsome ends up at Michigan than at UNC.
