Illinois Almost Completed the rare Auto-Rutger in a Win

I don’t know if anyone else noticed this but Illinois beat Purdue last night 24-6 while throwing for 26 yards! Brandon Peters was 3/6 for 26 yards.

Has a self-inflicted Rushing Rutger like this approaches happened in the B1G in the past 50 years? I’m sure Army does it occasionally but I thought it was notable. By the way Illinois can still TECHNICALLY win the West and Jeff Brohm probably should have gone to Louisville. Keep throwing that chair Jeff!

Brohm’s mission was to stay in a humanitarian capacity and upgrade the locker and emergency 1st aid capacity for visiting teams at Ross Ade Stadium.

I watched a decent chunk of that game.  Miserable weather, like in Ohio and Michigan.

At some point, there was so much standing water that the goal line pylon started floating away!

The infrastructure at Purdue's stadium - it really is bad.  Worst in the B1G.  Not as bad as when the south bleachers still existed (I swear, I felt those things could collapse at any moment), but it's still not good.

I'll give Illinois credit - that team is still fighting hard.  That says something about Lovie, I think.  They'll be favored against Rutgers & Northwestern, and a win at Michigan State (a team that is the complete opposite in terms of fighting hard right now) isn't a stretch either.  They should be going Bowling.

Agreed. Impressive mid and late season surge by the Illini. The 25 straight point they score on our team was no fluke. It sure gave them confidence since then with a big upset over Wiscy.

The rain at West Lafayette was a big factor on the passing game. Illinois will be another team to keep an eye on as they are sure to be spoilers. Would love to see the beat Sparty.

I don’t know about Army, but Navy won a game without completing a pass not all that long ago. I think Niumatalolo was still there and I want to say they might have attempted one pass and didn’t make it.
But hey, don’t rely on my memory for much of anything.

Illinois could go bowling this year. Gotta get two wins out of the remaining schedule of Rutgers, MSU, Iowa, and Northwestern. None of those teams have been impressive, with Rutgers and Northwestern being total ass. I almost want to say that they should go bowling.

That is the ultimate disrespect move a team can pull—to win 100% on the ground without running the triple option. If we ever do it to an opponent we should coin a clever term for it.

Unfortunately, the only time I can recall it happening is when Wisconsin did it to us for like an entire half of a football game. Also, I'm pretty sure that if we ever see one team do this to another for the entire game it will be Wisconsin doing it to Rutger. Hopefully they play each other next year.

Look at some of those games in the seventies. He had a decent passer in Don Moorhead in 1970, but after that none of Bo's quarterbacks were much good in the air. Dennis Franklin (started from 1972 to 1974) and Rick Leach (started 1975 to 1978) were both primarily running quarterbacks. Leach in particular really struggled his first couple of years and finished below .500 in career completion percentage.

The best example I can think of is when Michigan beat Ohio State 22-0 in 1976 without completing a pass (here); Rick Leach was 0-6 with an interception.
